Facebook gaming drops in popularity (what a shock!) photo

While some pundits assumed Facebook gaming was set to take over the world, the latest figures show that such distractions have become less popular over time. In 2010, roughly half of all Facebook users jumped on such titles as Farmville and That Other One, whereas 2011 saw only 25%.

Researchers are citing smartphone competition, the demand for less casual and more skill-oriented software, and the difficulty in attracting users as contributing factors for the drop.

I can't say the decline surprises me at all. When you appeal to Facebook users, you're trying to gain the attention of the easily distracted and the perpetually bored (that's why we all have Facebook). It's hardly surprising that such users cannot be relied upon in the long term. I also don't doubt that the sheer volume of developers hopping aboard the bandwagon choked the market a little, and now we have more studios than ever fighting over users that won't stick around for long. That's not a sustainable market, as far as I can tell.

While the potential for social gaming is still an intriguing prospect, I think appealing solely to the fad crowd is a bad idea. There are some genuinely good game ideas hitting the platform, and we need to see more of those, rather than a dozen studios trying to be the next Zynga.

There is some entertaining shit out there it's just organized, advertized and maintains communities poorly. FB could easily topple other more "traditional" gaming platforms if there was more of a concerted effort on FB's and the developers' parts. Lest we forget, FB was founded in 2004 and was public 2005. It's only been 3-4 years since there have been any "real" gaming efforts on FB anyways. People need to slow their roll before automatically claiming either way where things are headed

No. What this is usually known as is called "progress."
Facebook games were far more popular when there were less game apps for phones.

Now decent browser games and actual decent game apps exist and theyre always getting better.

I think Facebook gaming would be growing exponentially if they let you play the Facebook games on your smart phone, which they obviously don't.

Shocker. Personally, I think it is the nickel and diming that is turning off players. The free to play model is the most expensive type of game you can play. I never personally played a single Facebook game, but almost every single person I know who used to play them all the time has stopped because they were tired of games being designed to drain them of money.

A close friend told me that she started getting so frustrated with how many of the games were practically forcing her to pay up in order to progress. I talked her into buying a 3DS and told her that those games might be more expensive, but you'll get full experiences that won't bombard you with ads or payment options every other click. She is currently loving Mario.

Think comparing two years might be a bit too short of a time frame to get a good look at what the market is going to do, but that's definitely a big drop.

Listened to your chat with David Jaffe this morning Jim. Really interesting stuff. Jaffe seems really chill

So people finally figured out that spending money for digital accessories that do nothing is a waste of time, great.

You want to know what's really surprising? For some reason, Zynga's stock is UP 2% today.

I really don't understand the stock market.

The only movie when I was little that could manage to scare the shit out of me, and its such a retarded movie...

Facebook gaming dropping in popularity however, that doesn't scare me one bit.

It's only a matter of time before people start to figure out the business plan behind facebook games. People will eventually figure out when you try to waste their time and offer to make the game quicker in exchange for cash. They will realise that it's either a waste of time or a waste of cash and will decide to do things that aren't a waste of either.

It's also because these types of games are almost never good, they are just designed to be addictive. Ultimately you've spent 100 hours performing menial tasks, and all you have to show for it is a batch of crops, or the most expensive buildings in your virtual city, or you have all of the virtual clothes for your bingo avatar. I think casuals are starting to catch on to that (I also feel a little bit that way about games like Minecraft but let's not get into that.)

Meh, every now and again a fad hits big and people make tons of money for years on end. Before CoD there were shooters like Timesplitters. Now? Not so much. I thought stop and pop shooters were a fad, now the mechanic is in damn near every shooter regardless of context.

Not too surprised that the FB gaming scene isn't the honeypot everyone hopping into it wanted it to be. Then again, their expectations were almost comically out of proportion.

There is actualy... two games i have found that i consider actual games and not "wait for the timer to go down" excersices.

Kings Bounty and Tripple town, so far Zynga has only stolen one of the concepts.

This makes me glad as I was scared that, due to facebook gaming popularity, this was where the future of videogames was headed.

Sure it's ok to have SOME facebook games, but make them good ones instead of having many thousands of crapware ones.
Personally I've never touched a single one, and I'm not trying to look cool I just honestly think they're a waste of space.

1) Facebook put in features to block the spam from friends playing these games. The first games had the luxury of being able to spam everyone all the time, making it easier for word to get around and lure people in.

2) Companies are getting wise to all the time being wasted during work hours, and are beginning to put the clamp down on these games.

It's not an environment healthy for growth, for games that require continuous viral spread.

Honestly, I think at least some of it is that Facebook has made it easier (i.e. - possible) to block FB game spam. Man, that shit was RIDICULOUS. Everytime I signed on, I got slammed with 10,000 fucking invites and things. Nowadays, besides a few posts on the newsfeed, it's not nearly as bad.
