We said something similar at the beginning of the month about the Wii, but it turned out that the numbers were so close that some said it didn't happen. Either way, the Xbox 360 and Wii were neck-to-neck in Japan for that one week. Impressive. Unfortunately, the PS3 did not stand a chance last month.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 moved 53,547 in September in Japan, which enabled them to hold an open hand up to their face and say... well, "face" to Sony's sales of 33,071 PS3s in the same time frame. Credit goes to the recent price drops and the new Japanese RPGs, like the craptastic Infinite Undiscovery.
Not surprisingly, the Wii sold more than both of them combined (109,548). Keep at it, Microsoft. Get more pervy games and RPGs in your line up and you'll be golden.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Yeah I guess the Tales of Vesperia didn't help at all right?
Yes I agree Infinite Undiscovery was a piece of shit....
But Tales of Vesperia was awesome, sure it isn't as good as Tales of the Abyss, few games are. That game pushed units like crazy.
I know destructoid did not like the game and called it cliche, but you guys got a dude who doesn't like JRPG to review the game...thats utterly ridiculous.
Tales of Vesperia's combat was better than Tales of the Abyss, and its combat system was awesome....TWO WORDS: AERIAL COMBOS.
So yeah sales were pushed, but not just because of craptastic jrpg, but beause of kickass one.
BTW, why didn't you review Tales of Vesperia Dale. If you gave Spectral Force 3 a 6.something, I can hardly believe you would give TOV the same score, they're not even in the same league.
Also... YAY Microsoft! Keep it up.
Keep at it Microsoft. It's about time someone showed them what they were missing during all the time they've been wasting on their Wii Fit boards.
But what got me was that I saw 2 other people buying an Xbox 360 at the same time as me. Previously, it was a rare event to see anyone buying a 360.
In the stores there are promotions for upcoming JRPGs, and even a few dating sims on the shelves. I really think there has been a bit of a change in opinion and the 360 is actually starting to getsomewhere here.
But then again, Japanese consumers are notoriously finniky, and will rush to the cool new thing, just to abandon it the next minute. I think the fact that they have announced a new 80gb model PS3 for North America but nothing yet for Japan can't be helping PS3 sales here.
But, to keep things in perspective, the Wii is still king here. Nothing illustrates that more then the local 2nd hand game store in my suburb. They will buy an Xbox 360 Elite for 20,000yen, and a Wii for 19,800yen.
