Oh, Peter. Yep, it seems that our beloved Mr. Molyneux has attended the Denis Dyack school of pre-release hype. It teaches you to say as much crazy stuff as possible, every single day, until your game is released. This time our intrepid designer is talking about why Fable 2 wouldn't work so well with the PlayStation 3. I um and ah because, OK, it's a quite sophisticated piece of tech. These days I don't get involved so much with shaders and the actual 3D design any more, the actual programming. It looks very complex. The 360 and the PS3 technically seem neck and neck. Sometimes I look at a title on the 360 it looks fantastic, sometimes I look at a title on PS3 and it looks fantastic. I can't see a difference. What I would say, and this is not just me being the good company man, I'd say the thing I love about the 360 more than anything is nothing to do with the hardware, it's all to do with LIVE. LIVE is still underexploited for a game mechanic. Some of the stuff in Fable II we're doing with co-op is only possible because of the way that LIVE is structured. I love playing around with that stuff as a designer. Whereas PS3 doesn't seem to be quite so mature on that side. They haven't got quite the same infrastructure and service but, you know, yeah, I'd love to get games on every platform.
Peter Molyneux calls the PS3 a "worthless piece of sh*t" CONFIRMED! Seriously though, do you agree with Peter's assertion that Xbox Live is what makes Fable 2 possible? Would you contest that the PlayStation Network is robust enough to support the game's online elements? After all, with Resistance 2 and MAG promising the kind of multiplayer experiences that Xbox Live is yet to touch, I'd say that the PSN can more than easily handle 2-player co-op.

It would be nice if the molyneux explained what it is about the Xbox live structure that he felt was different/superior to PSN.
Also any news on his next game based on... PURE HYPE or whatever he said.
Well, seeing as he admittedly isn't talking about graphics or anything, but instead talking about a hardware component that IS unarguably more sophisticated on the platform, I think it's possible (I don't personally know how either platform's backend infrastructure works... and neither does anyone here so don't bitch about it, alright!).
I actually think that was one of the least crazy things Pete's ever said. Haha.
He could be right here but I'd still like to think of him as crazy ol' Peter.
I guess Live has more standardized hooks for jump-in, jumpu-out online play? Sound right to me.
He is on the Microsoft payroll though, soo
That's Our Peter!
Oh peter. You CRAZY FOOL.
Maybe he means the integration of Live? Not to say it's impossible but you'd have to work alot closer with sony to be able to do the same thing I guess.
"They haven't got quite the same infrastructure and service but, you know, yeah, I'd love to get games on every platform."
Actually Peter, I don't know!
He basically started the sentence and then saw dollar/pound/euro signs draining in front of his eyes and so quickly U-turned at the last minute. Crackpot genium.
I think it all comes down to the fact that LIVE has been around for longer, has had it's ups and downs, and so has been tried and tested.
However, the gaming industry is about trying new things (and coping successful ideas from other people when they're not looking) and not going with the PSN just because it's not been around as long is a tad COMPLETLY CONTRADICTORY OF THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY'S NATURE.
Other than this - sure I can see where he's coming from. But, then again I own a 360, not a PS3, otherwise I'd be riled as having such a tiny excuse being the reason for no development on my format.
Until he announces a game he is developing for the PS3 i'm not going to listen to a thing he says about it. Plus, I thought Fable 2 online co-op wasn't going to be ready in time for release?
"I couldn't be bothered, and Microsoft have more money."
I bet he'd still dance like a fiend to get games onto Nintendo platforms though.
Black and White on Wii. I need say no more, that console was practically MADE for that game.
Sounds like all he's saying is that Live is more intuitive to use than PSN, and he's right. PSN works just fine, but not quite like Live. You get what you pay for I guess.
lolll peter you're so funny hehehe
He really had to grasp for straws there, didn't he??
Pfft, okay lazy Pete. Thanks for not even trying. Fable 2 could be the first PS3 game to revolutionize 2 player online co-op, but its okay. Take the cop out excuse. I'm sure you'll still make plenty of money.
I don't see why it couldn't be possible on PSN other than the fact that Peter prefers LIVE. He didn't say anything specific about PSN that would prevent them from developing on it.
Look at Burnout: Paradise's easy jump in/out multiplayer functionality for proof that PS3's network is robust enough. Also, GTA IV. Fable 2 is no where near as complex as either of those games in the 'online' department. He's clearly talking out of his ass (how many MS points do you think he gets for sweet talkin' the xbox?) ;-)
You people are rediculous to say Live is better than PS3. It seems your still trying to justify your xboxlive payments. Look, Peter makes games for the 360. He has never made a game for the PS3 so how would he know? Any game that has online co-op play on 360 could easily be replicated on the PS3 and be free.
Give it a rest you fanboys.
@Demtor: You do realize, that Lionhead are owned by Microsoft, do you? Maybe that's why they're not doing PS3 version? Ever thought abou that?
Why wouldn't it be possible? Is this guy retarded? It would work just fine, although I'm sure the 360 would have a more user friendly setup.
In terms of Value, LIVE = PSN
Seriously.
Live is the standardized system that everyone has to use, and so itll be more robust and probably a bit more efficient (at the things it does, compared to ps network doing them).
Thats not to say that its impossible on ps3. If anything, it seems to be more useful for doing crazy things because its not so restricted; you can do whatever you want, if you feel like putting the effort in to get it working.
So hes kind of being lazy, but i also suspect that some of the Live elements he's put in Fable 2 were inspired by noticing things that Live is particularly good at.
@JACK of No Trades - how can you call people fanboys following such a ridiculous, defensive comment? This is not a big insult to the console you are obviously a fan of, no need to act before you think.
Really Peter? What about those people who don't have XBL Gold? What difference do they see? Is the answer none? Oh yeah, I guess it is.
Ajax
Dude, I own both systems, but I play my PS3 more, because my destructoid buddies are on PSN plus its free.
Lionhead is owned by MS and Peter hasn't made any games for the PS3. It would be retarded to listen to what the guy is saying about PSN.
@bioshocked - Yes, I did. Meh, he isn't talking about that. Like I get what your saying, it makes sense. But not from him. He's claiming it won't work, so I'm claiming he's a boob.
is he fucking serious? this guy is a fucking joke. honestly M$ must be pushing him to say shit like this. since when was fable all about co-op and a 2 player experience. i always figured it was seen as a feature, not the main course of the game. what a fucking joke and such a lame excuse . "LOLOLOL FABEL 2 CO-OP IS THA GRAETEST MANE FEACHUR OF THA GAME. PSN SUX0RZ!!!11! LIVE WORKS BETTER WITH CO-OP AND FABEL 2 IS ALL ABOTU CO-OP LOLOLOL WHERE'S MY $$$$ NOW MICROSOFT?"
His studio is owned by Microsoft.
That is all.
God I love articles like this. The other day the guy who made Little Big Planet said that game couldnt be done on 360, which we all know is utter crap. Now Peter says this and in both cases fanboys are up in arms!
Perhaps there is something in the way XBL runs that FOR THE MOMENT makes this only possible in the way it was designed to run on the 360. Its not like the game is running online via dedicated server. Perhaps PSN itself doesnt have the bandwidth to currently support tracking everyone playing the game to display those floating orders and then allow for instant joining of games.
I've played quite a few PS3 games online. The latest being the Socom Beta and...its not exactly smooth and easy. Its the simplicity to use that makes XBL so good. It just works with no effort from the user and about as little frustration as you could ask for an online system.
Im going to assume when Peter says it cant be done on PS3 he means cant currently be done. The XBL infrastructure dwarfs that of PSN in terms of hardware (servers), code base, and features.
Im sure down the road PS3/PSN would be able to do the game just fine but right now, with the system in place perhaps its just not possible.
In the end does it really matter if he collects a check from MS? If he were being truly biased would he really say the hardware and graphics were about equal? I highly doubt it. If he was spinning to promote MS of course he would say the 360 is better in every dept.
d0x
You lost every ounce of respect you had with that comment.
He sounds like an Xbox fanboy.
@Holyetheline
he IS an Xbox fanboy.
@Mr. Molyneux
shut your stupid mouth. you are making me not want to buy your game.
GET EM JACK!!!
What did he say that was so bad? I am preferential towards PS3, but he's right. PSN isn't as well developed (yet) as Live. Live is just a better all-round social networking tool than PSN, at least until Home comes out (and the we'll have to see how that works out).
d0x: They weren't lying. This is the only advantage PS3 has over 360 - processing grunt. The 360's GPU by all accounts seems to be better (look at the number of cross platform games that downrez on PS3, or placed side-by-side just look a little better on 360). But the PS3 obviously has more processing grunt. When has ANYONE ever argued this issue? I thought it was common knowledge, and hardly a fanboy argument, that the PS3's "brag factor" has always been it's number pushing power. And how few games actually take advantage of that :/ But anyway, LBP is a game that's massively heavy on the physics interactions. Maybe it could run at 100% on 360, but that depends on how much of the PS3's grunt they've used, I guess.
I doubt this "live integration" is anything beyond the boundaries of what the PS3's online can do or has done.
*waits for Yojimbo's bkaclash*
I don't think that it'd be impossible. I mean from a fundamental standpoint they're both the same in many aspects.
But Live is way better, seriously. And anyone that is still bitching about the 50 bucks a year needs to grow up and get a job. Or mow more lawns or something.
Guys, it's all based on ease of use, and XBL is a dream vs PSN to work with, stuff gets done so much easier.
I think he just means the coop aspect. In that sense, yeah probably. Probably not. I don't think he means the whole damn game.
RAWR
That is all.
You know maybe when a developer praises their tools for being awesome... maybe they are in fact awesome. I have yet to hear someone praise PSN for being easy to develop for.
This is one of the less crazy things he's said. This post blows it a little out of proportion, I think.
RAWR PS3 SUX RAWR
If MS paid me for making crappy games i would say that they are the best too :P
I think Peter's team is just lazy or maybe Microsoft is paying him extra to bad mouth the box o blu ray
I find one problem with this. I paid for a gold subscription for Halo 3. I could not for the life of me figure out how to cancel my subscription and when I called to cancel it the guy was crying. He was trying everything in his power asking me if I was sure I wanted to cancel it and if there was anything wrong. I just wanted to cancel the damn service I never used! After this experience I am never going to pay again. This is why I like the PSN, it is free and I don't have to call some moron which is trying everything in his power to change my mind. So for me LIVE is a terrible choice because I don't want to go trough that a second time. Make it for the PS3 damn you!!!
Nice try Peter: I play Burnout: Paradise just fine on PS3 and TF2... and GTA4... and UT3... and SC4... and COD4.
But "the movies" for the PC is still broken...
Of COURSE Fable 2 on the PS3 isn't possible, Microsoft owns it. It's like saying "Next Legend of Zelda isn't possible on 360?"
:P
Fable 2's been annoying to hear about, so far, with probably the most annoying thing is that they kept spamming Rock Paper Shotgun with previews and news all throughout development... while still calling it a 360 exclusive and not just admitting there's a PC version that will come out months too late, long after anybody who gives a fuck has forgotten about it.
This is too Funny! I bet Peter is laughing all the way to the bank.
"The Dog might be a bit fractured, the Lip sync messes up... Oh and PSN is a little bitch." Lol
Live has more innernet goo than PSN does. Clearly he's talking about the facts here.
Peter, call me when you get 64 player DM and 8 player co-op.
that doesn't make sense when the game won't even ship with online co-op...
Wouldn't surprise me if he's right. XBL has more experience on its side. PSN is still just a baby, at this point. But who knows, with Peter?
Also, Jim, why haven't you posted the story about Fable 2 shipping WITH online co-op? Evidently, there was miscommunication.
Your appraisal's sensible Jim.
