Fable 2 is talkative: Works with three XBLA games (also, tough achievements) photo

Lionhead's Peter Molyneux may be a bit of a hype machine at times, but he's certainly got some smart ideas. As part of his plan to make games "talk" to each other, it has been revealed that not one, not two, but three upcoming XBLA games will be compatible with Fable 2 -- as money won in the former can be transferred as funds in the latter.

"The idea is this," Molyneux explains. "Carbonated Games, part of Microsoft, have made some great casual games, Arcade titles. They have got three titles, one call Keystone, one called Wizard’s Tower and one called Mage Dice. Why not make those what we call 'Fable-compatible'? And that means that when you play those [semi-gambling] games, when you win, you win Fable gold, and you can transfer that Fable gold to Fable when you buy Fable. If you’ve already got Fable, the money will transfer automatically. If you’ve yet to buy Fable then your balance will be transferred. That’s cool."

He said Fable way too many times in that explanation.

Molyneux also wants to add some spice by using the achievement system to dangle carrots over the heads of gamers. He promises a "tough ride" and hints that achievement points would be tied to the game's new morality scales -- purity and corruption. "Pure good, being the purest and most noble of individuals, is all to do with sacrifice," Molyneux suggested. "How much are you willing to sacrifice to be good?"

What exactly does Peter mean by that? He talks of pushing the player, to have them make "sacrifices" for achievement points. Sounds like there are some tough decisions to be made in Fable 2, and hopefully this will lead to a game far more engaging than the original, which I felt fell short of its ambitions. We shall have to wait and see exactly how deep this game runs.

I cant wait. Fable 1, despite its flaws, was an amazingly fun game, and I cant wait to see Fable 2

I like the idea of Live Arcade games "talking" to retail games like this, but I just wish they were something other than luck-based gambling games. The roulette-esque game that they have already showed off looks like it'd be fun... if I were playing with real money.

I never got to play the original, but I heard good things from my roommate who LOVED it.

The interactivity thing is cool, too. However, REZ and E4 should be Fable-patible. Direct score transfers to Fable gold. Instant Fable pimpin'.

Also, Fable.

for some reason when i saw that picture i thought this story was going to be about Raven Blade (the game that Retro Studios dropped in favor of Metroid Prime way back when)

I am willing to sacrifice 100 hours of my life in order to get an achievement. Probably also a few mealtimes, schoolwork, a little self esteem, my social life, and soap/water.

On second thought... maybe 100 isn't enough!

Bring on the Fable!

Woah man can't wait to get this game, just hope they're not hyping it up to mutch... that's what made fable 1 fail in my eyes, sure it was a great and brilliant game, but not the game I heard PM talk about for months...

As long as I don't get old and grey in the first half hour of playtime, Molyneux can do whatever he wants with this one.

I think that by sacrifice, he means that you will kill off a path that leads to certain achievements so you can get other ones. Basically like the Paragon/Renegade achievements like in Mass Effect.

They would do well to give at least 1 XBLA game for free if you buy Fable 2, or maybe some 50% off codes. It all reeks of gimmicks though.

i hope its more creative than "Donate 1,000,000 gold to the church" to get a good achievement.

I really want all the acihievements to be hypothetically atainable in one playthrough. Screw the mass effect, 'do it all again only with a different NPC stuff'.

I recon the hard choice he talks about is going to involve killing the dog. He did say he was going to make us love that dong and then use that to fuck with us.

Molyneux is a master hype-artist. But even if it is hype, its the type i like.

Unlike the Halo's and the Assassins which is a bombardment of ads and media spam served up in my mountain dew.

I think this game will be fun, but Molyneux seriously needs to stop hyping these games up. He's done it will all his previous games, if he just let the games speak for themselves then people would judge them on what they have instead of criticising them for what they don't.

I will admit though, he is bloody good at it though.

Morality achievements are a complete and utterly terrible idea.

Let's give gamers choices about the individual they want to be in the game and then coax them to respond in a particular way every single time.

Mass Effect does this crap too.

I love Molyneux but I really agree with the sentiments that he needs to chill out on hyping his games. It makes business sense but he's always got his head so far up in the clouds that I'd hate to work on his team knowing that a lot of the stuff he says just won't be possible and will just piss off the fans.

And I'm cool with having to play through twice to get most of the achievement points but don't make it impossible to get all 1000 and give us some better XBLA games. Gambling is not enjoyable when I have to pay to win fake money.

Sounds interesting...but really what sounds even more interesting would be having a drink with Peter and just having a conversation about games. The man sure can woo you with his ideas and theories.

Hopefully with Fable 2, he can implement some of those ideas more successfully than he did the first Fable, which was good but flawed.

I really like the idea of forcing you to play twice to get all of the achievements. Adds more replay value. Now the question is, do I go through as evil or good first?

I feel that overhyping a decent game can make it feel worse than it is, when it doesnt live up to its cancer curing properties. Molyneaux definitely has no idea how to walk the line carefully.

Hrn. I'm starting to think maybe molyneux is less overambitious but ultimately shoddy game designer, and more marketing ubergenius. Despite the fact that all his games since black & white have been seriously underwhelming, he still manages to build this critical mass of hype for all of them, and every time that translates into an assload of sales. This new cross-marketing scam is a masterstroke, though. People excited about the game will buy these arcade games before fable is released and disappoints them, and less harcore, who'd be less swayed by the hype will be cajoled into purchasing the full game should they enjoy the arcade games.

Also, I played the original fable without any hype(I didn't have an xbox), and I still didn't think it to be anything special. It had repetitive combat with ridiculously underpowered magic, questionable art design and an uninspired, extremely linear plot. I expect nothing less from fable 2.

I've always liked Molyneux's ideas but after playing most of his games I always feel a little shortchanged/ripped off/taken advantage of/raped. Hopefully this won't be the case this time...Although I do sort of like being taken advantage of....ooooh sexay!

I'm a little worried about the XBLA games. I'm crap (UTTER crap) at gambling games, and Peter said you don't earn money from quests, so this seems to be one of the few ways to earn money. So... to afford a new sword or armour, i've got to splash out 800 points x3 on three XBLA games, then play them for hours on end, hoping to win big enough to afford some new armour.

Does this really sound that fun?

I enjoyed the first Fable. I would of enjoyed it more if not for Peter's bull shit.

It's happening again. I'm getting hyped, but I guess I'm more in tune with the internet so I can see before I buy if all Peter said was true. Thank you internet.

Fable 2...DO want. That said, I think one of the achievements should be for the WORST POSIBLE hair/facial hair combos. In Fable 1, you could could add combos that made you look like a deranged hot-mess tranny. I vote NO on tramp stamp tattoos this time around, though. *rolls his eyes*
