So I woke up this morning to what might be the greatest videogame news of all time -- Sony has released some new Firmware for the PlayStation 3! It seems like we only got the last Firmware less than three months ago, but surely we have to wait years for such wanton delights!
This Firmware brings with it the cloud-based system storage that will only be useful to you if you've dropped the cash for the PlayStation Plus subscription. The rest of you do get a little something, though -- the ability to configure when your DualShock 3 times out. The boys in the lab who spent four years figuring that one out deserve a medal.
Also, hacker protection! That'll last a week if we're lucky.
Of course, all these features are just distractions. Everyone knows the real joy of owning a PS3 is watching a bar slowly fill up with a mucus-green color. I feel privileged I get to do it again!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
P.S. Yes, it does come that often.
Did you see any bitching? I'm stoked as fuck, bro! This is the best thing to happen today!
We've had three updates in a little over three months. It's an unpleasant surprise to face when I turn on my PS3, since it means when I'm settling down for a game, I have to go find something else to do because my PS3 is now doing something else for five to ten minutes.
I call bullshit on those load times mainly because it took two minutes for my Xbox to update with an updated GUI and added Kinect features when Kinect was released.
All these updates, well, it's like your girlfriend taking a phone call right before sex: It wrecks the mood.
Time to DANCE!
What is "often" to you?
Here's the tough truth:
You want to play on a console, you follow the company's rules. That's why it's a closed system. Company decides it doesn't want to support Linux? Tough luck. Company decides it wants to ban you? Tough luck. Company decides an update is necessary? Tough luck. Stop bitching about something when you willingly submit to a closed platform.
It's like complaining that you have to wear a uniform to school or a suit to your job. Don't want to wear the uniform or suit? Don't go to the school or find another job.
Again, it's a closed system. If you want a more open one go to a different platform. This whining is just sad.

I may be in the minority, but I feel like my $50 for PS+ was worth it... especially now!
GOSH! 3 updates in THREE MONTHS! 1 update a month! Oh my god that 1 day a month totally wrecks the other days, right?!
To be more serious though: These updates have been happening for a long while. I understand the whining and complaining for the first 10 or so updates, but this is 3.60. I think this is just like an infant kicking an adult. Stop it. You're not going to accomplish anythng.
Also, aren't many of these updates a result of the recent hacking? Want to blame someone? Blame the hackers who don't understand that it's a closed system and don't respect the company's rights.
I fully support people on PC who refuse to be limited, because the PC is an open platform with few rules.
The PS3 is not.
I think I've said enough.

Because sitting down to play a game and being told "Fuck off, come back in ten minutes" is annoying? Especially if you have a new game and get to combine the pleasure of a system update with a game installation?
What's that? Dragon Age II comes with a fifteen minute installation so now PS3 owners have got nearly half an hour's worth of updates to look forward to if they pick it up today?
You don't say.
(so long as you've also got a PC)
I'm just glad you didn't say: "Fuck year!" - I fucking hate that. Yeah is Yeah, Year is year, no matter how loud you shout it.
Y U MAD? Some of us just want to celebrate a hotly anticipated software launch on the PS3. Stop ruining everyone's fun, XBOT!
Consoles are closed systems, but that doesn't mean you are powerless as a consumer. I'm not as ready and willing to open my throat and swallow the gravy as you are. If Sony decides that removing Blu-ray movie playback on PS3s serves their interests, I'm not just going to spread my cheeks and take it.
The complaints here arise from the inevitable comparison to the PS3's direct competitor, the 360. The PS3's update scheme feels barbaric and intrusive compared to the implementation on the 360. 360 updates are nearly 10x faster and MS has made an admirable effort to stick to the Spring/Fall schedule for major updates.
Thank fuck for that!
Only prick here is you mate. I just want to see good games made and see the advancement/evolution of gaming.
From the hundreds of issues with gaming, from the Michael Bay style story and gameplay to DRM, rubbish ports, etc, firmware, no matter how much of an annoyance this insignificant thing is, remains just that. Insignificant.
I would think there would be much better things to complain about, but of course, if you'd rather I not call it out and let Stirling continue with the whining without any sort of comment, by all means, I shall do that.
I just thought this was a site for actual criticism and journalism, not whining.
@amtalx
The prick shall respond:
If Sony were to ever remove Blu Ray, then you have the right to kick up a fuss. You also have the right to kick up a fuss over the removal of Linux support and other things.
You DO have the right to complain about firmware updates, but for god's sake, life is short. Use your time to complain about things that actually matter. This is just petty, considering the long amount of time firmware updates have been a standard and, as others have pointed out, the advantages certain updates bring, like cloud-saving.
