While the jump from Assassin's Creed to its sequel brought about a whole new set of faces and places, don't expect the same for the follow up.
In its third quarter financial conference call today, Ubisoft revealed that the Ubisoft Montreal-developed title would not only star Ezio, but would take place in Rome. There, the assassin will continue his quest to destroy the Templar Order, this time at its source.
The title, which is said to feature an important multilayer component, could ship anytime between holiday 2010 or March 2011.
Personally, I find it a bit disappointing that Ubisoft isn't taking the Assassin's Creed story line in a such a direction that would introduce gamers to new assassin's and a completely different change of scenery. It's incredibly likely that Ubisoft will reveal more at E3, so until then, I'll continue to be excited for the follow up to one of my favorite games of 2009.

I hate this game.

This move just ensures that they can bump a sequal out annually.
Which is a shame, because the assassin's creed series is one of my favorite new IP's ever!
Aaanyway, one is not impressed. I'd clung onto the rumours of it being in feudal Japan, because that would be awesome, only for it to be in another locale that's pretty similar to the last.
What I really want from this series is just a new character in a new setting every time. None of this major conspiracy theory that links everything together stuff.
The characters in the modern world look like characters from a bad PS2 game and Desmond is annoying.
Goddammit, Ubisoft, you could have gone with THAT.
BUT!
If they're recycling assets/engine, they could probably have a good go at another massive "location" adventure. I've heard people talk about enjoying the setting recreations more than the core gameplay.
Also frees them up to put resources into crafting the story and art direction.
I kind of smell a business model change in the industry, really. Look at Fable 3, the looming "far reaching" Mass Effect title, the quick turn around of the Next Dragon Age title, the nearly immediate Left 4 Dead followup. Its an intersting change of pace and form for the AAA studios...
But now they've proved themselves I think renaissance France would be perfect for the next one.
It's a shame... Ah well, Assassin's Creed 2 left the story open for a sequel so it makes sense.
So yeah, all they can really do is keep it close to the last one (ESPECIALLY since they introduced guns last time) which means Ezio or one of Ezio's close offspring. Assuming they want to keep this franchise going past the next one that is.
@GuitarAtomik - *Spoilers*
Ubisoft could definitely take the plot backwards in time. The ending of AC2 has proven that the all-knowing denizens that predict the 2012 disaster have no problem contacting people independently of their time.
****SPOILERS******
In the end when you got to Rome I really wished you could have explored that, it would have been incredible. So location wise I'm not really bummed about, in all honesty.
But I hope they do way more with desmond, it definitely got super interesting/cool in the end with him.
I completely agree! The whole sci-fi angle is bad enough but that Da Vinci Code nonsense was completely inane. I try to ignore it because I love the rest of the game but I hope they keep that to a minimum.
As previously mentioned while guns were more advanced in pre-industrial Britain they were still single shot affairs, thusly they could become a gameplay mechanic. You have a single hidden pistol with one shot. Do you use it for the assassination or do you keep it as a back up should things go wrong.
The above may have already happened in AC2, unfortunately I've yet to get around to playing it. It's sat on my shelf gathering dust atm.
Took some time to close the deal.
1: Do it in ancient Japan and be a crazy rooftop jumping ninja.
2: Do it as Desmond in modern times. 2nd Game set up perfectly for that, with Desmond finally learning to fight. And you'd get to use rocket boosters and grappling hooks or whatever.
