I'm not sure exactly when the crossover craze got started -- perhaps in 1996 with Capcom's X-Men vs. Street Figther -- but it seems like they're popping up everywhere; Super Smash Brothers, Capcom's Vs. series, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, and games like Cross Edge are just a few examples. If you're a Japanese company that isn't making crossover games, you're not getting invited to the prom.
Nippon Ichi and Gust are adding to the list with Trinity Universe (PlayStation 3 exclusive), which will hit Japanese shelves in September, courtesy of publisher Idea Factory. NIS and Gust are apparently getting double prom, though, since this isn't the first time they've all gotten together -- they teamed up for the mediocre Cross Edge as well. Their latest offering features tons of Atelier and Disgaea cameos and some original characters.
Anyway, there is a rather long trailer for Trinity Universe below the jump. The first, say 3:30, is just character introductions. I'd suggest skipping it unless a.) you speak Japanese and b.) you really like watching Prinny and Etna talk to each other. After the pleasantries, you can catch a glimpse of the actual game: 3D dungeons, a battle system that involves some sort of chain mechanic, and lots of shiny explosions.
So -- did any of you like Cross Edge enough to be interested in Trinity Universe? More importantly, what would your ultimate crossover game be like?

I think it would be cool if these companies just pooled together their best talent, and let them create something really original and interesting. Wasn't Chrono Trigger the product of a similar crossover between Square and Enix back in the day?
this may be interesting but i'm more glad to hear wizardry's back in production for the ps3. fuck yeah! and do japanese gamers really love those high pitched voices? i had to fast forward 6 times to only see 5 seconds of blurry gameplay. i hate high voices unless they're cuming from a woman i'm having sex with. (zing)
@Qraze that is what a large amount of Japan sounds like tbqh, I was a bit surprised when I visited.
I am kinda interested in this. Cross Edge wasn't great but the masochistic side of me that just enjoys grinding in RPGs found some joy in it. Plus seeing familiar faces is always fun.
I know people love all these RPGs that NIS brings over, but the characters are all so lame. Cross Edge, despite the lame characters, could be fun, but the entire time I was playing it I kept wishing that the combat system were all the way like Valkyrie Profile instead of only about 50%. If this game plays like the original VP I'll be interested, otherwise I'll just take a nap. The end result will be the same but I'll save fifty bucks.
As to ultimate crossover game, how can that even be a question? It's obviously Metal Gear Solid and Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball. Put Kojima and Itagaki together for some Tactical Boob-Bouncing Action and it's all over. Greatest game of all time!
I'm enjoying Cross Edge, and after watching that trailer I really want this game, as long as the story is pretty decent. The gameplay looks really great; I'm pretty happy that NIS made the shift to 3D.
Umm. best crossover would have a setting to make it a 1 0n 1 fighting or a super smash type battle. including
Dead or alive, bloody roar, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, KOF.
those games are awesome but the only problem is half are 2D and it would be hard to mix them without removing some awesome features of the games like. you cant imagine Ken doing Fatalities. most of the games dont have projectiles and others have weapons like soul calibur. so it would have to be pretty lame and end up removing all the things that make the games so cool
Oh man, Cross Edge was a nice piece of broccoli covered in turd.
Every system was way too complicated, the search mechanic was one of the most asinine pieces of gameplay I've ever seen, there's so much grinding in each area where the number of monsters is very limited, the story is really lame (every character has amnesia? seriously? why'd you bother using characters from the same world if they can't interact in the way you would expect from them?), the jokes, other than Etna's and Prinny's are pretty rote, the combo chaining system has twice as many kinds of attacks as it needs, and it's really hard, so much so that the enemy ai is gimped. If it actually attacked in a way that made sense, normal would be 10 times as long from added grinding to get your characters to survive a round.
If you're willing to put up with that, the combat system can be cool sometimes. That's your broccoli.
I loved cross edge so theres a high probability i'll be picking this one up as well. It really is a shame that etna is always in these games when laharl was a much better character, and the main character at that. If etna had boobs i could understand it but since that isn't the case its just confusing.
I don't have PS3 but there's games like FolkLore , Demon's Soul and Valkyrie Chronicles that i really want to play.
I'm not being a xbox fanboy but it's kinda sad when ps3 gets ex-360 exclusives like Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata and yet we didn't get any ps3 JRPGs for 360.

Is it coming to NA?
This is no exception. This looks fantastic.
But, to be serious: This game looks interesting. I might give it a shot if it comes out in NA.

If it has Prinnies, it's on my Radar.
Should go with Laharl instead of Etna though this time.

Madden crossed with Peggle.
