Expect fewer 'Hero' titles from Activision next year photo

No doubt about it -- a lot of Hero games came out this year. The list, in full: Guitar Hero: Metallica; Guitar Hero 5; Band Hero; DJ Hero; Band Hero for the Nintendo DS; Guitar Hero: Modern Hits for the DS; and this December (officially) Guitar Hero: Van Halen. Wow.

Well, according to Guitar Hero brand CEO Dan Rosensweig (via Joystiq), there are already new Guitar Hero and Band Hero games in the works.... you'll just bee seeing fewer of them next year. DJ Hero, won't be left out in the cold -- there's "more" on the way, if that's your thing, too.

Recently, I've heard weak (and totally obvious) rumors of Guitar Hero 6 already well underway, which Rosensweig has basically confirmed. This shouldn't come as a surprise. Despite declining sales of music games, I don't expect them to fall off the map any time soon, especially when it comes to the Hero titles, which Activision will support until the end of time.

But even more interesting, a tipster recently dropped hints of something called Guitar Hero: VIP Pass (or "Backstage" pass) in development by the recently acquired 7 Studios (the former developer of Scratch: The Ultimate DJ). But it won't be a game at all, if the source is accurate -- the details were vague, but it sounds like a Halo: Waypoint-like service for Band Hero and Guitar Hero

Personally, I'm getting used to the influx of Hero games, particularly now that Neversoft seems to have found its footing and have made some strides towards a really solid full-band package. Just please, no more of my rock idols singing pop-punk songs, okay?

By 'fewer', they actually mean they'll be releasing 25 'Hero' titles, instead of 50.

I'm tired of music games, just like how in the early 2000's I was tired of skating games.

I'm with Nick again. I know Nick aren't you surprised?

Of course I'm a huge music game fanboy so my input is no doubt biased but I've not only gotten used to the influx but it's given something to look forward to. I don't think less Hero games is a bad ting though.

I'm especially excited because GH5 was so good and the DLC has been decent thus far.

At least Neversoft can stop churning out forgettable Tony Hawk titles in trade for churning out forgettable ----- Hero games.

Don't forget GH: Smash Hits.

It's easy to release less "Hero" games when you set a record, Activision. I only own the original Guitar Hero and GH: World Tour or whatever...which is one title too many for me (it was a gift). I don't blame them for banking on it, but I just wish they wouldn't do it so intensely.

Also: I like pop punk! >_>

Speaking of retro Guitar Hero, I want Even Rats in Rock Band. That was my go to "chill out" song in Guitar Hero 1.

I'm actually really glad to hear they're already working on another DJ Hero. I really like that game and a sequel could improve a ton of its faults. Great that they're committed to establishing that franchise, even though it's not selling much yet.

How about they stop working on games and start getting songs? I'm tired of this poppy crap. I want something that will make my eyes bleed and my fingers burst into flame.

Agreed jean2317. Accordion hero needs to happen.

I saw Weird Al wearing a shirt with it on it. It just needs to be "the Weird Al game".

@ Tron
Notice this, then:
Which publisher churns out Hero titles?
Which publisher churns out Tony Hawk's Pro Skater titles?

I rest my case, as the culprits are one and the same.
