Exclusive: Screens for Luc Bernard's Reaper & Mecho Tales photo

Luc Bernard is a busy bumblebee. He's only just released Steam Pirates for iTunes, but the notorious developer already has two more games in the works. Mecho Tales is a PSP Minis game, which Luc says "won't be crap like most of them." It's a sequel to Mecho Wars but will take the form of a sidescroller as opposed to a strategy game.

Reaper is a game I'm somewhat excited about. It's a platformer action game, described as "Mario Bros. with weapons." It'll be an episodic title split into three parts and is due for release on HD consoles. Bernard won't confirm which platforms, but has confessed to recently become a "Sony fanboy" so we can most likely assume a PS3 release.

"The game is also very early in dev, and the current screens do not show how good the game will really look," explains Bernard. "We plan to include all kinds of next generation lighting effects and other things only possible on HD machines. We want to use the power of those machines to also create gigantic boss fights."

Check out the screens (including some Dtoid exclusives) for both titles in the gallery and let us know what you reckon!

What platformer can't be described as "Mario Brothers with weapons" (Earthworm Jim)? Lawl, oh Luc!

That boy can draw, but I'm REALLY glad he got more developmental help from Oyaji Games, because man, was Eternity's Child awful.

Looks nice. I wonder if that guy can jump.

Can you really call it mario-esque by the sole presence of platform jumping? I mean, there is some superb level design inherent to those games which shouldn't be comparable without backup.. /asshat

I hope Reaper gets a PS3 release, if only because I have a PS3.

If not, well, I can get a 360 later...

He should stick to drawing and let somebody else handle the actual gameplay.

I guess "Mario Brothers with weapons" sounds more spectacular than the genre's established name of platform shoot-em-up when selling it to the general market. We the hardcore enthusiasts will however scoff at that choice of words.
I agree with "That boy can draw", beautiful.

Yeah, the drawings are amazing. If he learned from Eternity's CHild faults this could be an awesome game

@Popyman
After Luc exploded because of the Eternity's Child review and subsequent thread, he basically got his life together, apologized, and formed his own legitimate game company.

Some months later, he reviewed Anthony Burch's game "Runner" on Destructoid.

Neato, let's hope it plays well. They better have spent a while on perfecting his jump.

Despite the craptacular Eternity's Child, I find myself constantly interested in Bernard's projects. This Reaper thing looks really good, but I won't be tricked. Oh no. Let's see some gameplay before I become all invested again.

Guh, some elements in the non 16-bit screenshots look disparate, especially the atrociously unattractive health/mana bars.

Don't worry though Luc, you get this feedback now, unlike some AAA designers who've put worse UI elements into their games.
