Exclusive: Retro City Rampage out on XBLA first, WiiWare later photo

Brian Provinciano, the mad man responsible for Retro City Rampage, has exclusively revealed to Destructoid that his retro-style homage to gaming will now be coming out on Xbox Live Arcade Summer 2011. With that good news comes with some sad news as the WiiWare version of Retro City Rampage will now be coming out in Fall 2011, months after the XBLA version.

Although the release date comes later than originally planned, both versions of the game will now include more content, such as more missions and more playable characters. The Xbox 360 version will also include widescreen support and additional Xbox LIVE features including a challenge mode, character creator mode and video replays.

Brian wanted to make sure we let Wii fans know that he has "done everything possible to avoid disappointing them" and "apologizes for the delay". Retro City Rampage is a "100% self-funded" project still and Brian is actually cashing in the rest of his retirement savings this week to continue work on the game. That's pure dedication right there, folks!

Releasing his project on XBLA will help guarantee Brian some money from the project, especially considering that WiiWare doesn't do all that well in the sales department. Brian summed up the situation to us by stating that "in order to continue making these games and not have to start flipping burgers after Retro City Rampage is done, it needed to be multi-platform."

Any word on a PSN release? I got a bit scared for a second that this would go the way of Super Meat Boy, what with copyright shatz, but I don't see any indication that Microsoft holds the rights to this game itself. Either way, there's still the Wii version. Can't Wait!

WTF! Games like Super Meat Boy and this don't belong on an Xbox. They have too many Nintendo references, that it seems weird to play it on a Microsoft system. The same thing with Scoot Pilgrim.

Not necessarily, look at the picture. The game's copyright belongs to the dev, not Microsoft.

Brian could still pretty much sell the game where ever he wants. I just hope Sony doesn't turn their nose up at it like SMB.

@Fuzzet15: I'm tempted to say that it's probably another Super Meat Boy. I wouldn't be too surprised if Microsoft's contract has a "no PSN version" clause. They are known to do that sort of thing, after all.

Because people that prefer to play games on a 360 aren't Nintendo fans and should be punished? I own both a Wii and 360, and also own many Nintendo consoles and games. I was going to get the XBLA version anyway...just for the possibility of being able to play the game with my friends. Or at least have some sort of leaderboard functionality. Or get timely patches when necessary...

@Delusibeta

That could very well be, I just feel the need to be optimistic for now. It sounds like the game's dev really needs money, and that's why he's going multi-platform, so it'd be in his best interest to get it on both systems. Microsoft/Sony's best interests on the other hand...

Wow, that's ridiculously random. Wiiware game goes to 360 and then comes out first on the rival platform. Well, I still think I'm going to buy this on Wii. As with Megaman 9, I wanted my experience to be as retro as possible and the Wii certainly accommodates that.

I wonder do MS watch reactions to downloadable games pre-release then try to poach the popular ones with a big offer for a timed exclusive?

Warning WiiWare not doing well in the sales department is a fictional statement by the clueless author of the article, not a statement by the game's creator. It also goes against the statements of almost every other (actually good games') developer who has published titles on WiiWare, indie or not.

This is becoming a disturbing trend, where games get announced for WiiWare first, then they get ported to XBLA and actually come out first there. The first big case of this was Super Meat Boy, which is still not out for WiiWare yet, do to trying to get it down to the right file size. So maybe Nintendo should start locking up some of these high profile WiiWare games into exclusive contracts, so this trend doesn't continue for them.

If you want your game to sell, or even be noticed, you don't put it on WiiWare.

XBLA and PSN have much better setups to show people what's new, what's popular and what the games are all about. Wii just has a convoluted shopping interface running at dial-up speeds with Mario instead of a proper loading bar.

To clarify: XBLA + WiiWare sales obviously are more than Wii sales alone, hence why every indie should go multiplatform (and add PSN too) whenever possible (notice this guy also did that, rather than restrict himself to any single platform, even if that platform could have been the almighty XBLA fanboys - Magnalon - and clueless article authors - guess - praise so much) but that doesn't also imply XBLA sales alone are so much more than WiiWare sales alone (although with the game being out on 360 so much earlier, that could be the case as true enthusiasts are multiplatform owners, but the reason for that would simply be the timing and nothing else). And before any other clueless fanboy says "Wii gamers don't buy games", keep in mind that as of last October it sat at a comfortable lifetime 8:1 attach ratio by retail titles alone and that from statistics we know that Wii has some of the highest percentage of online enabled users despite the overall lack of multiplayer titles, as Nintendo has done a great job in advertising connectivity and adding features such as the BBC player, Netflix, and others. In short, get your facts straight. Even outside official statistics, there are independent surveys (check GamaSutra for a recent one) showing Wii is used as much as any other system, if not more, even if it lacks in actual online multiplayer, as it makes up for it by other uses, both on and offline. Even primarily online services like Netfli are used more on Wii.

I do not mind the multiplatform, however I like to point out that wiiware has kept Bittrip and other titles afloat for many years now. Mean look at Cavestory it was a free game but the wii people have made the title very succesful eventough it was previously free.

I take this as a low-blow since I am wii gamer and I have been funding many title over wiiware, I might still get this game but it certainly does not help tha the creator is so unprofecional.

Personally I thin M****soft paied him of to get it on xbox live first.

I wish I wish that Wiiware was taken more seriously . Not by this guy, what he is saying is the truth. Especially for a self funded game. I just feel Wiiware could have been the avenue for a "golden age" of simply designed games. Games that never were but feel like they came from the NES era. I mean wouldn't a Nintendo console be the right place for something like that to happen?

i happened to have a bit of contact with brian, and he told me the same thing. it's a money issue. i still don't understand why this means that wiiware has to wait, but i guess we'll have to take it as we can get it. let this be a lesson to devs, don't announce your game to come out in dec if it's not going to come out in dec. it pisses us gamers off and ruins our holiday game buying plans. also, exclusivity deals are bs and need to stop. the problems with this title and meatboy are preventable with just a bit of forethought, afterall.

on a related note, who the hell wants to play 2d games like this on the 360? it's only about the worst controller devised for games of this type...

I'm happy this is going multi-platform so more people can play it, but I wish it came to wiiware first. like super meat boy I want to play it now, and it sucks that I have to wait longer for it to com out on Wii, I hope his game is successful it looks really good and you can tell he put alot of effort into making it.

Also, the Mega Man games, some of the only true multiplatform DL titles with no timed bull, sold best on WiiWare. We don't have exact numbers but when questioned Capcom only mentioned that they were extremely happy with the WiiWare sales which apparently surpassed their wildest expectations, in turn avoiding to mention anything about the performance on the oter platforms. You can figure out why for yourslves. And what a coincidence, they're also retro style games like Retro City Rampage.

what i dont understand is why people who claim to be fans of video games are upset that the game is now coming out on more than one platform. just because it has only been announced on xbla and wiiware doesnt meant that it cannot come out on any other platform.

all these people that are bitching should be happy for this guy. he is risking a lot making a game and cashing in his retirement, you assholes should feel good that he is going to be able to release his game on more than one platform and actually make some money from it. goddamn.

Why should someone be happy for him if they do not own a Wii or a 360, and they want to give him money? Yet cannot because he chose to put it on a system where downloadable games don't sell (WiiWare). This should be coming out on PSN/Steam as well.

And of course Microsoft paid him to put it on the 360 first, the game is being announced for their Summer Arcade thing. They did the same thing with Lara Croft Tomb Raider GoL.
