Here's an exclusive look at the Cave Story sprites as they'll appear in Cave Story 3D. This optional display of the game was revealed a few days ago, but this is the first time it's been shown to the outside world. Check out a full sized version of the image above, and a comparison between the Wii and 3DS versions of the game, in the gallery below.
We also have some clarification on how much of the game will be available in sprite form, and why the sprites from the WiiWare version of the game won't be making the jump to the 3DS. Check out the quote from Nicalis's Tyrone Rodriguez after the jump.
So, as much as I like the game's new 3D look, I think I'll be playing with the 2D sprite-mode switched on for at least half of my time with Cave Story 3D. I've grown quite attached to the little, low-res characters of the original Cave Story, and I'm pretty excited to take them on a tour of all new 3D environments.
How about you? Will you be playing this one in full polygon mode, or half and half?
When we started on the project back in December, I really wanted to find a way to make 2D characters also work in 3D space. Being a Cave Story fan myself, I thought other fans would probably appreciate it too. Anyway, we've spent a lot of time testing and making sure it works right, but now we have 2D characters in the 3D game. This includes the main character, Curly, all the Mimiga-- literally every character and boss in the game as 2D sprites in a 3D world. What you won't see, due to the fact that it's a new engine and differences between the hardware, are the environments in 2D or the WiiWare sprites and art.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But I'm still getting it.
Right we're releasing the original in all its glory!
"Um....its just a high res port, lazy developers"
Ok we've introduced the new 3d backgrounds with the old 2d sprites! There! The best of both worlds, everyones happy.
"Meh.."
Fuck you todays generation of gamers.
...
Fuck You.
It will be hard to see the enemies and the deadly traps while shooting with these visuals.
I'm sorry Nicalis, but you don't do Cave Story justice, in my opinion. Cave Story didn't need to be made in 3D, but they're doing it just for the 3D-screen gimmick, and that's not what will make Cave Story better.
Play the game for free on PC, just google it.
There it's all sprites, and all awesome :)
We have yet to know whether or not Cave Story 3D-Gimmick Version lives up to the name, but in case it's bad, it's better to have played the proper version first. You can still support it by purchasing it after you've played it :)
Regarding the WiiWare artwork, remember that the Wii has a resolution of 640x480 and the 3DS is 400x240. There's no way the WiiWare artwork would look as good as it did on Wii with the big res difference.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for clearing that up for everyone! Looking forward to the game.
not sold at all on the 3d environments.
Somebody had to be happy about this.

I'll pass, just like I'm passing on the 3DS for now...
P.S. - The game looks a lot better than screens let on, but the camera sort of wobbles around strangely in the Egg Corridor ...
Also: Thanks, Jonathan! I didn't see this one coming! Thanks!
Let me fix that for you...

Internet: "whine"
Coming from someone who has played through it more times than I can count, this just doesn't feel very Cave Story.
I couldn't help but laugh at the 2D sprites on the 3D background, but honestly the environments don't look that bad. They just don't seem to evoke the same feeling...
I'd still buy it in a heartbeat, though.
I found lots of interesting information here. The post was professionally written and I feel like the author has extensive knowledge in the subject. Keep it that way.
