Excitebots sells a pathetic 13,000 copies in US photo

What a surprise. You get a genuinely original and fun looking title on the Wii and it sells like sh*t. Destructoid opinion of Excitebots: Trick Racing has been overwhelmingly positive, so it should be no shocker that the poor game has only managed to scrape 13,000 sales across the US. For a game that has Super Sandwiches in it, that's more than sad. That's a God damned tragedy.

Excitebots had everything going for it. It followed on from the considerably popular Excite Truck, it had plenty of kid-friendly appeal, and you could play as a robotic praying mantis. Those are three huge signals of success, but unfortunately the game has spluttered in the starting grid.

I'm beginning to think the general public just as an aversion to anything that isn't crap. It's as if videogames, music and TV shows require a minimum amount of garbage in order to be embraced by the masses. The Wii is slowly looking like a dead zone for quality games, through no fault of Nintendo or game developers. The mainstream mediocres want trash, and trash is all they'll get.

Poor Excitebots.

Then it means it's a good game according to the actual pattern in game sales.

They thried to make it appeal to the casual crowd and it unfortunately didn't work, the problem is that it also doesn't appeal to the hardcore crowd by its style alone. I also doesn't help that the hardcore pirate everything Nintendo.

Welcome to trying to sell decent games on the Wii.

98% of Wii owners don't care about anything more than the damn game it came with.

Damn it. I put off this game due to lack of cash on hand for a month or two.

Now I need to buy it regardless.

honestly...I don't pay attention to anything wii anymore...regardless of quality.

If you wonder why the game has poor sales...its because Mario Kart Wii is the dominate cartoonish racing title on the wii. Why would a person pick this up if Mario Kart is sitting right next to it.

I'd rather play ExciteBots than Mario Kart one more time.

I think I'll pick this game up in celebration for finishing finals.

I agree with dinnertimeninja. It seems that games like Wii Sports, in the damn box, and Wii Fit, yes I know sold seperate, are what people like, and cheap shovelware games to keep their small minds occupied. Note: I'm not saying all Wii owners have small minds.

Side note: I just noticed last night that my Wii won't power on, the red light on the front isn't on when the system is off. Maybe the recent storm that went through here a few days ago knocked it out, even though its plugged into the same surge protector strip that my PS3 and 360 are plugged into and both of those are fine. I unplugged it and plugged it back in to no avail. Even though I haven't turned it on in months I'm hoping its just a bad power supply as I would like to play games on it in the future without having to buy another Wii console.

"honestly...I don't pay attention to anything wii anymore...regardless of quality."

This is a ridiculous statement. You're so butt hurt that casual games sell that you're willing to overlook great titles? This effects gaming as a whole, Sony can only relish in their billion dollar loss for so long before they decide to pull a PS3 Fit.

It really is a shame.

Dude, this is a site where video game geeks go, and one of the commenters on this article didn't even know that the game was out. And we're the hardcore ones.

This game really hasn't had any marketing at all; regular consumers have probably never even heard of it. C'mon Nintendo, get a commercial out there with Lisa Kudrow or Beyonce or somebody playing Excitebots! I swear, you'll see the sales hit a million copies.

Here is the thing... NO ONE KNEW ABOUT IT. The whole gaming world doesn't read gaming sites like this where a game like Excitebots will get attention. This game was announced and pushed out within a month it seems. It wasn't advertised, it was barely talked about within the whole gaming community, of course it's going to sell like shit. This isn't the Wii's fault, its publishing's... which yes I know is Nintendo, but they obviously weren't expecting anything from the game thus didn't give a shit about it.

I haven't heard ANYTHING about it. And when I finally did, it didn't look that appealing. There's just no character to it, and I didn't like Excitetruck, so I have no interest in it.

Ah well. Punch Out will sell out on Monday, so there's that.

"I'm beginning to think the general public just as an aversion to anything that isn't crap."

Honestly, this is exactly what I'm starting to think, too. If it's on the Wii and it isn't full of poorly-made minigames, no one wants it, despite how good it may be.

Sucks, but really, don't just blame "the general public" for not buying a game they've probably never even heard of. That's why games like GTA IV, Madden, and Guitar Hero sell well- advertising.

I don't think we can completely absolve Nintendo of blame here. We can't say they've genuinely tried until they've put out a good, wacky ad for the thing.

So far, the list consists of Punch-Out!!

God that's depressing. I hadn't heard much about the game, but I was hoping that Nintendo was actually doing something resembling MARKETING for it somewhere. Apparently not. This is particularly depressing for me considering I actually grew up a matter of blocks from where this game was developed, and have actually met the director of the studio. He's awesome. I better go buy a copy to clear my conscience.

@gimic300

actually its probably more due to the fact that I've got 20 to 30 good games in my collection of PS2, Gamecube and Xbox 360 games that I could care less about shoveling through the crap to find a nugget of gold in the wii lineup. Not one game that has been pushed by the media, blogs or nintendo of America that I've played has been any better than anything else I can find on another console for cheaper. Not No More Heroes, not Super Smash Bros Brawl, not Mad World, nothing except for Zack and Wiki has lived up to the hype and that's only because it does what the Wii was supposed to do. I find that people now are more surprised by the fun that the wii can bring instead of the actual quality of the games. Thus we're left with Excitebots which isn't revolutionary in any way getting a post because the game is not crap and selling like it is.

That's why "I don't pay attention to anything wii anymore...regardless of quality." Because the hype of the system has worn off and the games that are coming and have come failed to live up to the praise.

I'm not trying to be pessimistic because I do hope Klonoa's sales are good, but I just haven't seen anything from the Nintendo side of things that truly excites me. Except for the DS...tons of top quality games on there.

Just because Excitebots got positive reviews and positive press, doesn't mean I have to rush out an buy it. I just didn't want the game. Does that make me a bad person because I'm contributing to the "no quality games on the Wii" epidemic?

Wouldn't that be like buying a Snickers bar instead of a Milky Way because it weighs more, so obviously its a better buy?

If you're saying that just because the Milky Way has less substance than the cheaper Snickers that I should still consider the Milky Way then no...I would take the Snickers.

If you're implying that there is a meaningless difference between the two candy bars (IE the weight of the bar itself), then I would have to stop and compare the other features like calories, ingredients, sugar count then I'll just go with the candy bar that has less waggle.

I didn't like Excitetrucks that much, so I ignored this. It has nothing to do with it being a quality game or not, it just didn't appeal to me.

And it's been said several times, but I'll say it again for emphasis: Games that aren't advertised don't sell. It's that simple. This game got NO media attention anywhere, so nobody knew about it and thus nobody bought it. If they had advertised the game like Halo or GTA or Mario was advertised, the game would have gotten some sales.

Saying this game looks like a slight upgrade of Excitetruck is NOT like saying the next Call of Duty is just a small upgrade.

Call of Duty is actually GOOD.

An upgrade to crap is only a little better than crap.
