Ex-Vigil staffer on what Darksiders III could have been

May 31 // Abel Girmay

Four player co-op was always the hope says former creative director

In an interview with IGN, Ex-Vigil creative director Joe Madureira released a few nuggets of information on what Darksiders III could have been, provided Vigil staff, and not Nordic Games, had won the bidding war.

“It was always our hope to do a full four-player co-op game, with all four Horsemen playable ... It’s possible we could have pulled it off. I would have liked to introduce Fury and Strife. I know many fans feel robbed that they never got to play the last two Horsemen."

Story ideas included the four horsemen taking to fight to hell to battle Lucifer, going up against the Charred Council, or even making the Horsemen mortals once humanity had been brought back. Madureira goes on to comment the series' new steward, Nordic Games and whether or not he'd be go back to work on another entry.

“I’m not sure how I feel about the Nordic purchase to be honest. I have sort of a ‘wait and see’ attitude about it, as I’m sure many people do. I’m not sure if I’d want to get involved with it or not. A lot of my love for the IP is also wrapped up in the people we had at the studio and the stuff we created together. But I’ve learned to never say never."

I never actually got around to playing either of Darksiders games myself, but have more than a few friends who are fans of the series. I was surprised to hear a collective "meh" from them at the idea of a four player Darksiders, concerned that the sense of accomplishment associated with beating a boss or general progression could be muted. In any case, it looks like were going to play a long waiting game before hearing anything about Darksiders III proper.
