That's how Sony is. I think they create really great work but they put no effort into it once it's released. They throw their kids to the wolves and hope it finds legs to stand on.
Anyway, it seems that Sony is making more bad business decisions. They've been making some bad decisions since the beginning of this console generation, starting with the $600 PS3 price tag.
Sony fires some PR guys, and he says they need more PR at the holiday. That's all he said.
Ooooo, so important. News at 11.
Oh, and they need to bring back Kevin Butler!
That was about to be me, but then I saw that his points were actually proper criticism. Sony is its own worst enemy.
whats an ad on the side of a building going to sell? or ads all over youtube and tv? who are those ads geared towards? the non gamers? the people who wouldnt even know about those games unless they were bombarded with commercials anyway?
marketing is a true waste of money these days. everything is commercials these days. and i find myself ignoring them the more i see or hear them.
This guy is just confirming from the inside what we've known instinctively for a while. It's baffling that such a big company can falter in so many different ways at once.
You do know that there are tons of gamers who don't follow gaming news (let us call them, gamers lite), right? It is these people who probably make up the bulk of gaming purchases, in fact. I base this fact on pure guesswork.
Guys is just mad he is no longer working for Sony.
The kinds of things this guy is saying have been said for years about Sony. People know why Sony fell from grace, and it's sad that it seems like they're content to keep on business as usual. Too much compartmentalization, too many bosses, too much pride, too little common fucking sense.
Nobody wants to sacrifice their own piece for the greater pie. Promoting Lord Hirai was supposed to change that. Supposed to.
But the fact that he's a recently unemployed Sony PR guy saying "Sony needs more PR" doesn't exactly do much to boost his credibility.
What is next after this? Are we going to be upset because SCE is notoriously low on post-it notes and find out that the TV division has been taking them all?
Hate Sony.
Pretty much where I stand PSP, PS3 and Vita have all had great potential, stifled by Sony. They all live in PS2's shadow, but at least PSP came closest to escaping it.
Except anyone that knows anything about Sony as a company knows exactly what this guy is talking about. He's not dropping bombshells, here, he's saying exactly what has been said about Sony since their TV division stopped making money a decade ago.
How about we talk about how SCE wouldnt let Sony use the Playstation name on their line of phones, forcing them to call it the XPeria Play? Post it notes are funny, but are they as funny as Sony not letting Sony use the Playstation name?
hopefully they'll bounce off with Vita :P
Glad to see at least SOMEone at Sony is making good decisions.
Seriously, nobody was ever gonna care at all about Wonderbook.
I wonder if Phoenix Wright is handling his severance case.
What is the point of Sony Pictures licencing game rights to Microsoft? Or having a new camera if it took them years to interact with it? What is it with Playstation acting like the XPeria doesn't exists? Sony Music has a huge library of licensed music at their disposal, why didn't they ever thought about making them PS3 exclusives for Rock Band and Guitar Hero?
Does it makes sense for them to compete with themselves?
"It's a pretty harsh assessment of Sony's position heading into the holiday season, but it seems like level-headed criticism when you separate it from the fact that a recently laid-off worker said it. "
Right Awesome, A PR guy who takes to twitter to criticize his former employers.. This guy must have ton's of interviews lined up.
Not saying he isn't right, or that that the situation doesn't suck for those still there.. But seriously? Professionalism? Is there even a definition for that any more? Does he think this actually makes him look good, airing the dirty laundry?
"According to Powers, Sony's actually incurring more costs by firing its internal PR team and then giving the work to outsourced contractors. "
Well look at it this way too: If they don't have good PR going, they won't get people buying this shit.. So, in turn, they've got a huge amount of sending they've done, with little profit being made... Overspending to get any PR at all is just one weakness in the chain.
""That being said, you have to question the priorities of the company as a whole -- What [is] the point of AdHoc multiplayer when no one has a Vita?" "
I take issue with this cause he's chosing to forget the fact that Sony wanted people to own this.. They just aren't doing much to push people into feeling like they need it... Thats why AdHoc multiplayer is there.. No one having a Vita isn't a reason not to have it, or plan for it, its just a result of something else entirely.
""Sony in general is serving too many masters. Each company should operate autonomously. PlayStation shouldn't suffer b/c TVs are overpriced."
Right, but we've known for years now that the only reason the Playstation brand was able to survive the beating they took at the beginning of this generation was because Sony has overpriced TVs (well, everything). If one hand didn't pass money to the other we'd probably be lamenting the fall of the brand by now.
Also, theres a PS branded 3DTV out there, in case he forgot.. Sony's made it so some of those different areas bleed into each other. Even if it hasn't worked out for them, doesn't mean that there hasn't been nothing coming from the other, unnecessary, areas.
"Then again, I've long given up trying to understand Sony's business decisions and motivations myself. It just moves in mysterious ways."
Right. Just like we never understand what Nintendo does.. Or what Sega did back when they were still making consoles.. And whats the unifying factor here?
They're Japanese.
I'm seriously not playing the race card to be a douche, but I am playing it to point out that they see business (and EVERYTHING) completely different then we do, and they seem to be able to live with what their companies give them, no matter how backwards. Problem being, they haven't exactly caught on that they live in a global market, even though they've been a part of it for decades now.
Wake up disgruntled worker, no one needs PR anymore in the Internet age. Games sites do the PR for you!
He lost some points for twitter, and well.. Being a contestant on 'Tester'. Oh lord what a fuck up that is -- again by Sony.
