aw maaan the truth hurts :'(
Hell at this point Consoles are just crippled PCs anyway.... all the problems and so few of the perks. True consoles died last gen :P
The issue goes back to Jim's article recently about how developers (specifically Japanese, but I do believe its an industry wide issue) have their heads up their asses about needing the most amazing visuals in the world, when those visuals weigh down the entire project.
And thats really it. We sit though the credits after a game for what seems like 6 hours, through huge lists of people, for what? Because the game needs 12 teams from 6 different countries and studios to make the game ATTEMPT to look like it came from a video camera instead of a computer?
Meanwhile, the industry is shitting all over itself trying to pay those people and keep them employed, all while trying to turn a profit-and many MANY times it simply can't keep doing that.
But its got nothing to do with consoles themselves like this guy is implying, consoles are just a platform to play things on. If we ditched consoles and all went (say) PC then they'd still bitch because of the same shit. And they'd probably bitch even more because "Piracy is on the rise!" or "We can't make all games compilable with everyones hardware!".. Fucking please. If its not one thing its another. Developers and publishers (love'em or hate'em) are the issue, because they "get bored" or need to make "the most realistic experience ever imagined". New hardware, or even platform types, aren't' going to change it, its only going to get worse because of the people involved who won't refine the process or find a way to drop back on man power to create a good experience over a "life changing" one -they just throw more and more people and money at it, hoping it'll go away, then cry when it (obviously) doesn't.
What this guy and so many others seem to be proposing is that we ditch consoles "because their dying" in lue of smaller teams making $1-$5 games that we buy on cell phones something like 92% of the population own and can mindlessly finish in 4 hours or less, and then have to run back to the storefront to buy their next one because we have to have something to fill the space. Rinse, repeat, all while not realizing we're spending MORE money, because people generally don't pay attention to small expenditures because "whats five more dollars?".
And really, that does jack shit for the industry, because here we'll have, in the most basic terms, a bunch of lackluster shovelware that we can all write off buying because it was only a few bucks -it'll ruins any semblance (or need) for real creativity in the industry in most cases, which is what (I really want to believe) most of us game for.
Its like an idea I had (though not exactly a unique one) based on a really bad low budget movie I watched recently. You make a porn movie with your home (or even phone's) camera and sell it on a website for $1. 50,000 people buy it and what? You now have $50,000 for basically nothing more then pointing your camera at sex. Video won't even need to be that good, or long, if 50,000 people are willing to buy it for $1 - you don't need to give a shit about quality, or story, or theatrics; you just made an easy 50k. Thats exactly what people like this guy seem to want -the easy out, instead of actually taking the time to figuring out how to make the business side of the industry grow.
"But look at film versus TV."
We watch TV because you can't sit (or afford to sit) your ass in a theater every day for at least 6 hours. Meanwhile you can pay however much a month and do that every day on your couch. Doesn't mean Cable is "social" or "the better platform" it means its a cheaper alternative, and even that's being threatened every day with rising prices and people running off to do JUST Netflix or HuluPlus (or both, like I do) -so its not an infallible model either.
Seriously, my XBL stats say I spent over 550 hours in March watching Netflix, thats both watching movies AND TV shows -- Film to TV isn't the issue, it isn't an issue of platform, its how much people are willing to pay, and thats all on the shoulders of the people working in the industry that feeds it to us to figure out, not the hardware. Saying its the hardware is just a misappropriation of blame.
Minecraft started off with fan-funding, arguably one of the most popular "indie" games in a long time, and has made a shitload of money last time I heard. The game is pixels and blocks and the creator also said to go ahead and pirate it if you want to.
This is like counter to everything big publishers do and honestly seemed much more successful when you look at the scope of the project.
Granted there's always those "special" games and this seems like it hit the market at the right time in the right way, but isn't that what a publishers job is anyways? To help figure all that out?
anyways, my two cents.
I never realised it was rushed, seemed like they did a good job. much better than me3 anyhow. I mean gameplay wise. forget the ending.
well that's EA. :-/
At least there appears to be some variety and ranges of games on the PC. I'll forever have a PS2 and a healthy library for it, but I'll be abandoning current consoles in the next couple of years and won't be looking back.
