Ex-BioShock staff forming new studio, 2K Marin photo

According a job listing on Gamasutra (unearthed by Shacknews), some members of the BioShock development team appear to be forming a new game studio in the San Francisco Bay Area. Although the listing (which is searching for a lead animator) has since been altered, a Google cache of the posting (via 1UP) reveals the name of the new studio -- 2K Marin.

Some of the people who created the award-winning “Bioshock” are starting up a new studio in the Bay Area called 2K Marin. We are looking for a character concept artist who can name all of the “Masters of the Universe” characters who had mustaches. That qualification, however, is less important than your DaVinci-like knowledge of anatomy coupled with drawing skills that easily put the entire Hanna-Barbara pantheon into question.

Clearly, the most important Masters of the Universe character who had a mustache was Skeletor ... right? OK, so maybe I'm not the most qualified person for this position (was it Trap Jaw?), but this listing does pose an interesting question -- what would former members of the 2K Boston (and/or 2K Australia) team be doing moving to the West Coast? And just what's that Ken Levine fellow up to?

If the industry mystery Surfer Girl is correct, Levine is working on a new project (codenamed Project X), and the 2K Marin may be working on -- you guessed it -- BioShock 2.

[Thanks, Jonathan!]

Poor Levine! The guy got the shaft in all aspects of the post-bioshock debacle. Sure there were problems, but the guy still put out one of the best games of this year...unless you bought the PC version.

In before the "why do we need a Bioshock 2?" and "Bioshock without Levine will suck" comments.

If they ruin Bioshock 2, I will cry. A lot.

Bioshock 2 would be neat, but how the hell will they build the story from where it left off?

This has the potential to suck.

Holy:

PREQUEL! I think it could potentially be pretty kick-ass. Ryan and Fontaine had some big battles back and forth before the start of Bioshock, so they could make a game on that.

Perhaps I've just been listening to too much RetroForce, but that map looks kind of like an even dolphin's head.

I live and work in the Bay Area, and I have no clue why anyone would want to move to Novato. There's NOTHING THERE. They should move their operations into the Santa Clara area. Then us genius monkeys could corroborate.

Unless... hmm, maybe the rent up there isn't 1K per square foot. Those guys might have the right idea. Let me send my resume up there and see what's happening.

Man-At-Arms was clearly the most important mustachioed MOTU character.

But all I can draw is clayfighter slash fiction. :( Oh well.

If you guys want BS2 before 2012 you better prey that Levine isn't involved. These guys and they are extremely unorganised... IMO they are in a new 2K studio just to avoid the delays and direction changes that plagued previous games. Just my (semi informed) opinion.
