Everquest movie picks up writer, Nex picks up gun, holds to head photo

While it's almost a decade too late to capitalize on Everquest's dopamine-fuelled popularity, news just came in via AICN that the movie based on the game based on dozens of movies based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien has picked up a writer.

Michael Gordon -- best known for the script for the innacurate history lesson turned comic book turned movie 300 -- has been hired to write an adaptation for the film, which considering just how little the game has in the way of plot should be the literary equivalent of etching The Old Man And The Sea in a block of granite with his penis. Avi Arad, former head of Marvel Studios, has also signed on to produce the flick, though that really only reveals that we can expect a cameo from Vinnie Jones in a role to be determined almost entirely by Internet memes.

This might be one of those "hand on head" moments I hear about on the intertubes. Hollywood isn't so great when it comes to video games. This will probably do just as much for the fantasy genre as Van Helsing did for vampires.

Wait, you mean the Spartans didn't actually fight ogres and rhinoceroses and Xeres wasn't an 8 foot tall metrosexual piercing fanatic?

Hmm, Avi Arad. Was he the one that totally ruined the Spider-Man series, or was he the guy that tried to save it? Anyway, it could be worse than this. Brett Ratner could've directed the Escape from NY remake... oh wait he is.

haha, Pew's avatar is fitting.

Also, could definitely be worse. Two words? Uwe Boll.

Hey, at least it's not a movie based on The Sims.

@RJG:

I know what it's called...slang-ignorance used for dramatic effect. I want Hollywood to notice.

@Professor Pew:

If that Brett Ratner thing is true, I may soon be forced to embark on some sort of rampage of ultimate destruction. Truly, any fate the world may suffer at my soon-to-be-merciless hands would be better than the indignation of such a film being brought to bear.

For all the "people" around here that think "just how little the game [EverQuest] has in the way of plot", I'd just like to point out this website:

http://www.1stfistoflight.com/html/1fol/everquest/eqcodex/default.htm

EverQuest had a great history and back story "centering around The Prophecy of Trakanon and the demise of the Sleeper". I did guide work early on in EQ1, and got to play out some of the historical events online. Some of the works were amazing and really fun to play out and watch unfold. It's too bad the zone usually maxed out at 100 people making it difficult to get the story out to everyone, but fortunatly there were some astute players online at the time, and what we ended up with was this Codex.

Might be totally inaccurate fiction, (I can verify some of it) but it's a good read.

This sounds as retarded as the WoW movie.

@ Android - I played EQ at release, I am well aware of the backstory. Its just that the grim reality is different from what the story would have you believe. Nex's picture is much closer to what the game is actually like.
