Everquest man thinks Facebook could kill World of Warcraft photo

Many MMOs have attempted to take the crown from World of Warcraft, but as with nearly all attempts to beat a product that has already cornered a market, such games have been unsuccessful. Nevertheless, there are some that believe they have what it takes to knock Blizzard down, albeit with unconventional methods.

Everquest lead designer Ryan Barker believes that WoW will be beaten, and it'll be by "something totally different that we haven't even thought of yet."

"At some point someone will dwarf those numbers with a game," he suggests in an interview with Videogamer. "If we can get past some of the barriers that are keeping people from playing with their friends, just because their friends happened to start the game before they did, and maybe started on a different server or whatever, if we can start to get rid of some of those social blocks, I think it can get even better."

According to Barker, it is a social networking site like Facebook that will provide the key: "Facebook doesn't care how long you've been on Facebook ... Things like that show us that there are a lot of people out there that are interested in being involved in an internet community, especially with all the apps on Facebook, in playing casual games. At some point someone's going to do an MMO that really caters to that group, and is going to have a billion subscribers or whatever. There's another ceiling somewhere that we haven't hit yet."

World of Facebook confirmed? We shall see.

A -game- that provides no incentive for in depth, hardcore play would quickly fall to pieces. A social networking site can do this just fine, however. Which is why they are DIFFERENT THINGS.

Just add a "/Facebook" command in WoW. Done.

I'll send an invoice, good day.

It would be interesting to see a social networking site that connects with a MMO, facebook for WoW should be something blizzard is looking into

It's like once this guy official kills WoW (read: it becomes saturated in 3 years before WoW 2) he can die happy. He speaks with so much disdain for it.

"just because their friends happened to start the game before they did, and maybe started on a different server or whatever, if we can start to get rid of some of those social blocks, I think it can get even better"
Hi Mr. Barker! Blizzard is already doing this with free server transfers and making early-game leveling/gearing easier by the update. Why don't you focus on making a fun game?

I've always said MMOs would be better if you didn't have to grind to endgame to be able to play with and against those who are at the endgame without feeling severely underpowered.

Still it's amazingly stupid how out of control whole idea of a "barrier of entry" has become more annoying than the term "casual" in such a short time.

Honestly, what Blizzard needs to do more than anything else is to continue to make more interesting missions. That's the most vital ingredient missing from most MMO's.. although I'm trying to avoid MMO's for the rest of my days....

I think facebook is a waste of time. WoW is just to addicting to invest in. Facewow would probably suck.

An MMO that caters to the Facebook group. No hand-eye coordination required!

Otherwise known as... Second Life? That doesn't seem to be competing with WoW.

The casual market is taking down our industry one genre at a time!

But seriously, no casual gamer wants to play WoW. No matter what you put on it, WoW is and always will be considered a game that only "Losers" play. That only leaves the option of making a new MMO for Facebook, which would probably be something along the lines of Home and Second Life instead of WoW. If that's the case, how do they expect to make any money? Nobody would actually pay for something like that (If it was free, then I could see it being successful...maybe). I think this guy is just mad that WoW is butt-owning every MMO in sight.

I put WOW and Facebook in the same category. Time wasters. Only difference is that with Facebook is free. Paying to play the same game every month never appealed to me, then again neither has the WOW art style.

I'm not so sure I'd want to play an MMO with your standard MMO player, or the youtube/twitter/facebook user...or as Conan put it last week...you-twit-face.

I can see what he is saying, but facebook is FREE. WoW would probably have a billion people playing if it was free, and Facebook would be as dead as classmates.com if it charged.

PEople need to get over this "topple world of warcraft" bullshit. It's not going anywhere any time soon. The best you can do is try something different, and if it doesn't work, move on to something else.

Guild Wars 2, if ANet ever get around to releasing it, could 'kill' WoW. It is (should be) essentially the same as WoW except without server limitations (they say there will be servers, but you can switch between servers as much as you like) and without any monthly fee. I think those two things combined, if they publicise it enough, could see the death of WoW.

Other than that, I don't see anything killing WoW.

Heck, think about that. No coordinates addon, and no place to research where a quest item could be found with the coordinates listed for you. No WoWhead database kept carefully maintained, and no awesome players that go to WoWhead to share their experiences with quests or items or where they were lucky enough to find something or how they managed to take down something tricky. No writers with their own websites, just chatting away about their experiences playing different classes, and sharing tips on how to get the most out of them… or at least sharing commonly made mistakes to keep you from doing the same. No fan driven news sites to help you know Promotional Sweets what’s going on, what to expect, what to be on the lookout for. If it wasn’t for MMO Champion and WoWhead and Hunter bloggers and the players of the game sharing their experiences on those sites, I never would have known about the Spirit Bear pet available to Hunters to tame in the 3.2 patch, where he could be found, or had an addon that constantly scanned the area for a Unique critter Spirit Bear so I knew if he popped up. Something no company can plan on providing on their own. There is simply no way a company can devote the resources, the hours, the money to come up with all the amazing things that you, the readers, provide to the community yourself. he skills that you each have on your own, researching or programming or testing or being enthusiastic and positive and sharing that energy, that you each provide on websites and in forums and blogs throughout the world. Perhaps the MMO developer of the future, to try and capture some of the success of WoW, will have to devote serious thought on making it easy for a community to form.

The original concept for Facebook was borrowed from a product produced by Zuckerberg's prep school Phillips Exeter Academy which for decades published and distributed a printed manual of all students and faculty, unofficially called the "face book".
Facebook has met with some controversy. It has been blocked intermittently in several countries including Syria,[10] China, Vietnam, and Iran. It has also been banned at many places of work to discourage employees from wasting time using the service.
Privacy has also been an issue, and it has been compromised several times. Facebook settled a lawsuit regarding claims over source code and intellectual property. The site has also been involved in controversy over the sale of fans and friends

So... over on GameFAQ's the boards hottest topic was the 4% run achievement, a.k.a. 'The Insurgent' complete the game with 4% of items using only the grenades, foam and missles. Soon curiosity got the better of a handful of gamers and made it thier mission to find this apparent hidden secret. Over the course of what took a collective of people around three days. it was finally cracked by cooler. SEO SEO Professionals Best Articles Directory

If it doesn't have a card reader or usb ports and your going to need to connect a lot of peripheral devices like your camera then I suggest it isn't the right device for you.

You will not be able to connect the blackberry, the Ipad os does not support it.
There is the camera connection kit that has an adapter for USB and SD.
