Everquest is thirteen and free photo

Back in 1999 the concept of an MMO baffled me and I would have no truck with the genre until several years later. Thankfully, not everyone was as backwards then, or Everquest would not have lasted for the absurdly long time it has. Almost thirteen years and eighteen expansions since its launch, the well aged MMO is all set to make the move to free-to-play, a move its successor has already made.

Free and subscription (Silver) players alike will get a "welcome pack" containing brand new items when Everquest goes f2p in March. SOE has posted an FAQ which details the changes. There's certainly going to be a lot of content for new players to explore, but to be honest I have a feeling I've been spoiled by modern MMOs far too much to get into it. Regardless, it will be free so I might pop my head in and have a look.

I loved EQ while it lasted. I may check this out one of these days, but hopefully the F2P model does not spoil the game too much. I know EQ2 kinda suffered from F2P phenomenon.

Holy Wow! I'm actually excited about this. I played EQ for three years straight back in the early 2000s, and I often find myself reminiscing about my time in Norrath. I'll definitely be getting into this, just so I can have a run around the zones again.

They key to everquest is making, or bringing your own, friends. It lacks the easy to find group tools that modern mmo's have so supplying your own people for grouping makes the game go from annoying to fun.

Hopefully free to play is the future of all MMOs. Star Trek Online was $15 a month and was total horse shit.

Fond memories. They should have done this another way however. The initial game should have been totally free, with expansions requiring various levels of buy-in. I guess they are hoping to bank on people's nostalgia, and assume that it will wear off before level 50.

The reason I won't buy in are two: first, I want to just see the highlights. I want to run Plane of Hate again, but I don't want to spend weeks of grinding to do it. Grinding is the proper term with EQ 1.

Second, without a solid group of friends I won't ever see that content anyway. They need to give incentive to existing guilds on those servers to recruit and keep F2P scrubs. I can't imagine what that might be, but I can't imagine why existing guilds would even bother with new low level people. Without that social hook keeping me in, I'm not going to stay.

Also, a new progression server for F2P players to go silver and advance the server would be nice.

You never forget your first. I may log on just to run around the treetops of Kelethin, or train D'vinn to zone for old times sake.

The really crappy thing about this is Yes, they're shutting down the Mac Server. The Mac server may not have had a huge population but a cult following, as it was permastuck in Planes of Power mode, just slightly after most people got sick of the game. Really sucks, to be a paying customer and told the fuck off so they can peddle their free business model.
