Ever wonder how much videogame castles are worth? Uh, seriously? Why? photo

Confession time: I watch entirely too many house flipping and home buying TV shows. Some of you might argue that watching anything more than an accidental 10 seconds from channel surfing is probably entirely too much, and I can see where you're coming from.

But for whatever reason, these stupid shows are great stress relievers (the life of a blogger ain't always easy, yo). Except for that Suzanne Whang. Seriously, f*ck her.

Getting back to the topic at hand, Maxim's BFG got two real estate experts to assess the value gaming's most prominent virtual castles. Yes, the real-life housing market is bad enough that "experts" have time to chat about videogames. Neat.

Anyway, the whole thing is incredibly geeky (value is measured in gold coins for crying out loud), but screw it, it's somewhat interesting to think about. Remember, the key word here is "somewhat."

I'd buy a property that everyone hates, The Library level from Halo.

Then add a pool and higher watt light blubs.

Sell for profit.

Repeat.

I have seriously never thought of this before which is odd for an architecture nut. Oddly though, I've already started a list of other buildings from video games and their market values. Lara Croft's mansion is the first that came to mind.

How much is Castle Grayskull worth?

Haha awesome article. I'd put Devil May Cry 1's castle in the running as well.

The values were terribly arbitrary. Remove those, and you might have a good article, Maxim.

I wonder how much the castles in Worlds 1-7 are worth.

I'd rather have a castle which the door was a portal to another realm!

Considering that the practice of "house flipping" being so popular that it spawned its own shows is the root of the economic collapse, I think assessing the value of Dr. Wily and Dracula's digs is a much more productive use of air time.

Ness's house. I mean, seriously, its realistic realistic but also hides your nerdy side.

Location! Location! Location! I'm sorry but if my castle isn't close to a supermarket and a good school it's not worth what you think it does.

I find it funny that they measured it in Fable 2's gold coins simply because that was the first castle they looked at. Way to be lazy and not convert to the American Dollar for us...

I dunno, I don't think I'd want to buy a house that has no bathrooms...

I thought the gold coin value was based off the Mario Bros currency.

I think Fable 2's the only game wherein a value is assigned to the house.

Which is kind of unfair, really, as the estate is immune to market fluctuations.

Yeah, numbers came off as way too arbitrary. Though to be fair, ICO's castle is friggin' huge, and probably warrants its ridiculous price, compared to Fable 2's Castle Fairfax

I read their whole article. They should do another one like this, it was very entertaining and I can think of a lot of castles that they left out.
