Who are you going to trust when it comes down to your opinion on Microsoft's Natal? The small and lucky group of expert journalists who got the chance to demo the camera or famous people who have nothing to do with gaming? Why the latter of course! Microsoft knows this all too well and thus in between showing the tech off to people that matter they demonstrated it to the stars... or at least the moderately well known.

Felicia Day, Paul Rodriguez, Sugar Ray Leonard, Eric Dickerson and Willie Gault all got to look like really silly people and test Natal out. Considering they didn't test out the "checking out the bottom of an Avatar's shoe" mechanic I don't think we should care what they think. However, it does give us more chances to see the thing actually working in action. They all seem pretty impressed, but just watching them use it I'm still not sold that it is indeed a better way to control games. A different way yes, but standing there faking a steering wheel just doesn't seem that exciting. We shall see, but until then let's all be swayed by what B-grade celebs think.

As far as the driving goes, people do realize they sell steering wheels for the 360 right? Honestly that's a hell of a lot more realistic and an air wheel and pedals.

It's really pathetic to see people still catering to actors who don't know jack shit about games test run this stuff. Be it for more publicity, word of mouth to casual gamers, or just to see them be completely stupid at something that isn't so hard.

at any rate, real steering wheel over air wheel. I'm not gonna make my hands/arms rumble when I hit the dirt. Air can't implement that. I also hope people don't start thinking this will become the standard later. if so, gaming is only going backwards.

@Shin Oni These are not really directed toward "core" gamers. The impression I came away with was they were having people who do not traditionally play video games interact with a virtual world, what to them, is a more natural or organic way.

JK friend.

But really, gaming isn't going backwards because of this. Controllers aren't going to be forgotten yet, don't worry my friend. Its hard to say the tech isn't interesting. I mean, not everyone can have the steering wheel dongle shit in their home. I do understand your concerns though, but I have a feeling Microsoft won't pull a Nintendo and forget the core. GoW sells like hotcakes and they realize it haha.

What the fuck is wrong with Paris Hilton's face? She looks like a ketamine-addled prize fighter who just fell asleep in a ditch and now a cop is shining his flashlight in her face. For fuck's sake if we're going to have random pictures of slags on the front page of dtoid then could we at least have attractive ones?

Maybe if people stopped looking at this camera as an outright replacement in the short term, maybe people wouldn't be so angry. I prefer having a controller cos you need some feedback (like what Shin Oni said) but if you had the camera there as well and perhaps if while your using your steering wheel attachment you reach up and adjust your 'imaginary' mirror it adjusts your ingame on too.

It's all about subtle touches like how alot of good DS games don't have to use the stylus at all if they dont want to.

Okay, I know the Natal looks cool and looks to be fun. But these celebrities are OVER DOING IT. Seriously this is venturing into the Nintendo Wii territory, super happy family over exaggerating a game.

Man, they're not convincing me at all. It "feels real"? What feels real? That NOTHING you're holding and hitting?

Anyway, it looks fun enough. Though I know my casual tier Mom (by their standards, anyway) would want nothing to do with what Felicia Day was playing after a busy day.

Natal = stupid.

Fuck this whole "casual gamers" bullshit. Gimmiky shit for granny to play with? My Balls. That's right, your granny, my balls.

I could not give a fuck less what these vapid, talentless, media whored, celebrity, "Faces" like or don't like. i'm a gamer and Natal looks shit for me.

Microshaft is the whore of gaming. They did well monopolising the PC market, but now they've jumped on gaming and are whoring themselves to anyone with a buck they think they can get their hands on.

Natal is for cocksuckers.

Now that ALL of the major console makers have jumped on the casual bandwagon, it will be interesting to see who can last. The Wii has it so easy right now as it is the only "casual" console, but once Microsoft and Sony have their motion whatevers out they are still going to have to compete for a casual market just like they do for a hardcore market.

I'm no expert on this sort of analyst crap, but I wouldn't be suprised if there is failure by at least one of the big three, because they are not all going to nail a hardcore/casual balance.

i think its a good idea and they have a good presentation but when it launches it needs to be practical. what happens if i take a drag off a cigarette, will castle crashers start up? and i do not want to be flailing my fucking body like that first chick in the video, she looked fucking retarded doing it. as long as they K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) then it could be great but i think they'll put it in games no one will play to begin with. what's the point of milo anyway? talking to an a.i. is not how i want to spend my time, unless it will let me kick him in his undropped a.i. balls.

Felicia Day I know does at least play games. That doesn't mean I'll take her word on something however.

Also, I don't really care about Natal, except I have a small hope that it could be a spiritual sucessor to Seaman.

Ok, so basically I try not to post comments on stuff like this, but to refer to me as a person who has "nothing to do with gaming" is inaccurate. I write a web show that is about gamers, and gaming is what I do when I have spare time. I love gaming and have been doing it since Infocom text games when I was like 6. My show is sponsored by Xbox now and I weaseled my way in to demoing Natal. Wouldn't you? ;) I thought it was really fun from my short time playing and that's my experience, take from it what you will. We'll see what people develop for it, I personally would love to be sending spells out with hand gesture, although miming an air car wheel is kinda weird looking. I didn't get to try that when I demoed.

One thing I do appreciate in the article is the upgrade: I consider myself way lower on the Hollywood totem pole than B list. More like D. Or F.

And yes Velt, I have small boobs. Thanks for not holding it against me. LOL.
XOXO
Felicia

I admit, I think the Wii has revolutionized this industry in applying motion sensitive games to become standard.

It may not have revolutionized it in a way I appreciated, but it did revolutionize it in that people are now playing games like they would sports.

I like to keep my sports and my games separate, all the same. But then again Nintendo is doing what they're doing for a reason and you got to respect that, meaning they actually have a concept that works.

Natal is in a way the next step up. I'm concerned some of the original games will be things like Bowling Alley simulations, but at the least, it will expand what is possible in video games and could change how you play games. It may be just tech but the ideas are there that could change games.

Problem being is there is likely a lot of out of shape kids and the like on Xbox Live who will despise using it, even though the exercise is honestly the best idea, and also it seems to be targeted towards casual games where it won't change the experience of a long drawn out rpg or something else that much.

It could eventually change how you play something like Oblivion in a few years, that alone is worth it to find out what's next. It won't replace the Wii. But I never realized how many games the Wii actually has, and it's impressive, even when most of those are different kind of games.

And while I agree Felicia that it is a good idea to try out, I don't think this sort of thing will replace hardcore games anytime soon or be as deep of an experience as something like Morrowind.

I required an entire novel to be able to play morrowind front to back and find everything, that was more like an offline MMO. This is somewhat the opposite direction for games, which is sometimes bad and sometimes good.

The more complex the game the harder it is, after all, but coming from a background of very complex PC games I'm more used to that. I just don't think the motion controls will be great for games like Resident Evil 5, Splinter Cell 5, Fallout 3 and the like yet. It could add some missing features to the game, but it could not replace that type of experience in either immersion or interactivity.
