Even EA admits that music games' future is unclear photo

I catch sh*t frequently about my dislike of these plastic instrument videogames. That's not to say that I don't think others shouldn't play them, though. It's just that I don't enjoy them, much like Nick Chester does not enjoy anything where you have to pick battle commands from a text menu. My co-workers would assume that I'd get some kind of joy in saying that music games are going down or something in the like. I'm not; I'm just letting you know that even EA is concerned about their future.

EA Games president Frank Gibeau isn't feeling as solid about music games after seeing weak sales of Rock Band.

"...plastic's way down, so a lot of the music category stuff is not as robust as it's been, and it's unclear whether a lot of this peripheral activity that's happening is going to stick. USD 125, USD 115, USD 99 price points for these things - it appears to have gone soft right now in the market place," Gibeau said in a recent interview.

He feels okay about software-only releases. It's really the big boxes full of plastic things that he's concerned about. Is it just that people are less willing to spend the money on these higher-priced packages? Or is it that music games have run their course? I was done with them after the first Guitar Hero. Are you still playing them? Are you still wanting more?

I got the two GH controllers and GH3 for like $40 a while back. I think I've fulfilled my plastic guitar games lust.

Beatles Rock Band however seems like a true Beatles Experience. So if EA were to push forward like that on their series I'd be more than pleased. Just don't make Beatles Rock Band 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Once you have the stuff you don't really need to buy NEW stuff. I got two wired GH2 guitars for about $5 total, some cheap drums (with a metal kick pedal) and a mic on clearance at kmart. I don't plan on buying any future plastic instruments so long as these don't break.
Software updates are for sure the way to go.

This was predictable.

They meed to just consider the RB2 instruments a standard and stick with that. They could push other hardware online via Amazon, The Rock Band Store, etc. but they need to cut down on retail hardware in stores. I know a lot of GameStop managers are pissed because this stuff takes up so much space. I don't think any side is really benefitting right mow from plastic instruments.

Shadowill nailed it. You buy the necessities only once, while you update the software (ie, the games).

How much is this EA rep getting paid for again?

My want for more is definitely dissipating fast... but I still really do want the beatles rock band.

The games can be innovative in many ways, while in reality theres only so many ways you can update a guitar or drums and make it a "must-have" accessory to play your games with. I don't think they've run their course, it's just most of the instruments out there are very similar, with little to no difference between them. Sure, theres the solo buttons, but other that that there really aren't many things that a plastic instrument did differently that affected the game you played in a positive way. Like I said, the software can be innovative in many ways, but the instruments are, for the most part, the same between every game.

I don't need more plastic instruments, but I love me some music games; so long as I can keep using my old hardware, I'll gladly buy the new software.

I'm glad to know EA realises that they can't whore Guitar Hero forever but also confused as to how to reconcile that with the fact that I know they will invariably try and do just that.

Also, I love that picture as a summary of criticism of Guitar Hero; a bad argument coupled with horrible grammar and spelling errors (it's Down's Syndrome, Down syndrome is only barely acceptable because Americans have to invent their own misspelled version of everything). Not that I'm an intense fan (or even actually a fan) of Guitar Hero but when people hate on it for not teaching legitimate guitar skills it annoys me.

Slightly off topic, but my local Target was selling the GH:WT wireless guitar bundle for 44 bucks. Yes, I need a wireless guitar for RB. Yes, I was too poor for 44 bucks.

I played the first Guitar Hero like twice, then rolled my eyes for the next year because "a party wasn't a party without guitar hero." Then I was okay with it for a while, played with friends here and there...but I haven't actually bought any of the new games. I wouldn't miss them if the stopped making them, either.

It used to be so much fun to rock out to some GH, but now it just feels like I'm pushing buttons along with a guide on screen. I agree with SantanaClaus, it just wore off...

Beyond adding more songs there's not a lot else they CAN do.

Activison on the other hand, will continue releasing peripherals till 2047's Epiphone hero.

Activision is Guitar Hero. EA is Rock Band.

I enjoy rock band with my friends, and I'll probably buy DJ hero, but there's only so much you can do with the current state of music games. I blame the decline mainly on activision and the 700000 editions of guitar hero they release each year.

Yeah, I think the way forward is to consider RB2 as a platform rather than one iteration of the series... the fact that the DLC market is going strong and they're adding this RBNetwork stuff bods well.

Hey, me too! They had both the one guitar and TWO guitar bundles at the same price (?) of $44. That's a real good deal; the GH instruments have always been superior to the RB ones. If I hadn't been short on cash I would have picked that up.
It even comes with a great, Guitar Hero World Tour drink coster! You know, to put your Mountain Dew on when you are playing Rock Band. :P

I'm with SantanaClaus on this. I'm completely done with those games, which is sad considering how much I used to love them.

I would like to see music games be more then just button memorization. I would love to see a video game musical.

Honestly now, you have the guitars which never change really, the drums....... two different sets, and a microphone. What instrument is next?

It is probably just that everybody already has the peripherals, and they work with future versions, so they don't need to buy more.

Of course the RB2 dis isn't selling well. They make their money off of DLC.

I think part of it is that most people who want them already have instruments and a lot of those with older ones don't see a need to buy the brand new one. It's just market saturation really.

Having minimally deep musical knowledge makes these games completely irrelevant. You can have some fun, but if you had a band, a TRUE band(as in not having some friends in your garage without the guts to tell the bass player that he's tone-deaf and rhythmically-challenged) you'll feel like you're not having as much fun as you were supposed to. It's great for whoever likes it, but I find it to be shallow and, sometimes, depending on the cover of the song, painful. I actually prefered Wii Music to Guitar Hero and Rock Band. It almost always sounded like crap and you had very limited control over what you were doing, but it gave you the freedom and creative liberties that music is supposed to.

I just got into Rock Band this last year. I think that it's a very real possibility that the peripheral market will crash. However, the songs get old after a while, so as long as they keep cranking out the DLC (especially Rock Band Network), there's a potential for growth software-side.

I paid $20 for GH2 and a guitar on 360, still unsure if I'm going to bother any further. I do like RB's selection of music better from what I've seen (admittedly minimal).

@TheTaj:That's why I said sometimes. Things have gotten much better, as I could tell from as little as I follow those games' trajectory, but it still doesn't make those early covers any more bearable.

Besides, are there any Van Morrison songs in there? It's shameful how people tend to forget the man in almost every media conceivable...

Hopefully Activision doesn't start making future GH games imcompatible with old instruments. So then you'd have to buy the new instruments. Sounds like an Activision (read: evil) kind of thing to do.

I will certainly buy a Rock Band 3 if it exists someday, but I won't buy a new box of instruments just because it has some shiny body or a more realistic drums. I'm fine with my Rock Band 2 set and GHWT guitar.
