Crowd Control Productions has announced that the eighth expansion for its space-exploration MMO, EVE Online, has officially gone live. Bringing New Eden’s four empires to open conflict, EVE Online: Empyrean Age adds a host of new PvP features and is available for free to all EVE subscribers.

  • Factional Militias and Ranks - The militias serve to organize each government’s war effort. All militia members will share a chat channel to allow them to quickly coordinate strategy. The ranking system rewards talented pilots by granting titles and recognition within their chosen militia.
  • Factional Warfare Agents - More than 260 new militia agents coordinate the activities of militia pilots and assign missions inside enemy territory.
  • System Occupancy - Occupancy is gained by winning conflicts in contested complexes and indicates that the militia is succeeding in capturing and holding valuable territory for their empire.
  • Combat Zones - Starship pilots will find a variety of combat zones in low security space. Each of the systems within a combat zone contains a System Control Bunker which coordinates all activity within that system's Factional Warfare Complexes. Once a militia defeats a certain number of complexes, they are authorized to attack the bunker. A victory against the Control Bunker shifts control of the system to the victorious militia.
  • Factional Warfare Complexes - Militia pilots that successfully scan for a hidden deadspace complex and hold it uncontested for a set amount of time will claim it for their faction, and be rewarded with corporate standing as well as more tangible benefits.

It’s also worth noting how CCP is planning to provide the backstory on this interstellar conflict. It will be told through a novel written by Tony Gonzales entitled EVE: The Empyrean Age that will be releasing on June 19. I do find it a little funny that players won’t know why they’re blowing each others’ ships up until they’ve been at it for a week, though.

Are any EVE: Online players looking forward to the increased focus on PvP?

The thing that made me stop playing EVE ages ago is...

1) No twitch fighting mechanics system (I prefer that ELITE style than the point and click automated boring stuff in EVE).

2) NO easy way to play solo unless you stick to the trade side and avoid combat as you just get ganked all the time.

3) Space ports could play a much bigger part with activities to do and actualy being able to leave your ship.

I may visit the game again when they finaly include the long awaited exploring planets expansion anounced ages ago and to my knowledge still not incorporated yet.

P.S. Also it is a bit of a bitch if you make a newbie mistake and lose weeks or months or even years worth of stuff in the blink of an eye, yet another reason you can't play solo without a overly huge not worthwhile risk.

P.S. Incase you can't tell I would like tp play 'lone wolf' rather than in a corporation and be able to play the game rather like ELITE.

EVE is perfectly fine for those with time to make connections and spend each day wworking in a corporation to be allowed to stay in one and also following orders given to you without no choice of your own.

I often wonder what portion of the gamer population prefers playing a lone wolf and what prefers the pack mentality.

I will say though, I do like the concept of formalizing an actual organization structure for the game.

Gad I remember playing this game... Good thing FF11 was there to suck me back in into something I don't loose my shit if my fucking ship explodes in mid space. Yes I like the graphics, concept, gameplay, and the economy of this game has been dumbed down to pretty much a Monopoly between those Super duper elite geeks that have no life.

ill pass till they make a new version in which is the same as this one, but more fun with less of "u died, u lost everything"

This game really did suck me in for a while. The economy was really pretty impressive, considering CCP hired an actual economic analyst for the game speaks a lot about the deep economy or the self-fellating ways of EVE devs.I can't tell if it's either or both. I personally liked the lone wolf ways, but that's probably led to me stopped playing. But, I'm looking forward to the project ambulation that was announced. The walking on stations bit seemed like an excellent idea.

@Crunshii
I'm with you. The fact that the players that just start won't ever be able to catch up to the players that've played from the beginning. I'd say add actual manual or twitch control scheme and allow players a level cap with some other ways to level besides a time based system, I'd be all over that shit.

I absolutely love the artwork and the sci-fi space theme. Every screenshot I see of this game makes me want to play. I decided to pass though as I've heard so many stories about how un-fucking-believably hard it is.

Unforgiving, steep learning curve and a complexity beyond anything normal people are used to. These are the words that come to mind when Eve gets mentioned to me. I tip my hat to gamers that guild up and learn together. I however barely had the patience for WoW raids, let alone something like Eve.

I really wanted to like this game but couldn't get past the fact that playing lone wolf sucked.
They need to mix EVE with Tie Fighter with some off-your-ship gameplay for a new and much more exciting experience.

A friend of mine played EVE when it first came out, and gave me a free trial in hopes I would quit World of Warcraft and join him in space. After struggling with the tutorial - I find 3D environments without gravity disorienting - I was targeted and blown up by a player craft armed with missiles. Being that I didn't start the game with missiles, I can only assume it was somebody who had actually been playing the game some amount of time. I never played EVE again.

Yeah, I played this game for a while, three weeks at most. And then I gave it up due to everything being really really boring, and seeing as there is minimal amounts of actual interaction in this game, I returned to comic-style color-stravaganza world of warcraft.

After that I've been going back and forth between half a year of WOW, to get tired from that, and two weeks of EVE, to remind me why I fell in love with WOW in the first place.

I have at least four newb trial accounts with maybe twenty hours worth of gametime in each :)

I've played only on trial. Looked good, though perspective of 6 months pumping stats (to gain XP faster) and another 6 months to reasonably train one proffesion was out of question. In EVE system at some point player can't get any more skills for certain role, and starts to grow "horizontally" getting skills for other jobs/ships/etc. It's cool, though this level is around 2 years of playing ... so until one even becomes good enough for cannon fodder he's forced to wait a lot.
Wait - not XP on mobs a lot, as growth is fixed and can only be speeded a little with certain skills and implants.

I'd prolly play EVE if there was another server opening. Or if I HAD to waste my time on MMO of choice...

I really do hope one day someone makes a space flight/fight/trade/explore game like ELITE with twitch controls and with added MMOORPG geared towards lone wolf players.

I would surely subscribe to it and play it none stop.

I am not saying that team play has to be dropped completely, just only allowed in certain space zones or 'wars' such as Anarchy systems where you can have full scale battles, in other civilized systems there is no team ganking a lone wolf, just 1v1 or small 3v3 group max kinda fights, with the odd NPC popping up too..... A thargoid or two... lol.

It's really not that bad if you have a goal in mind when you make a character. I have played for a month so far and I am doing quite well. I am in a corporation with TWO other people who have taught me some of the finer points of the game but even so... I could be flying a battleship even if I had gone solo (have not been paid by my corp yet).

I guess what it comes down to is that you need to put a lot of time into EVE if you want to make money. Money will you buy you better ships/equipment that will help you succeed in harder missions which pay more money... If you are focused on what you want then learning the skills is really not that bad.

It's just not something one can go into all willy-nilly. Plus there are lots of sites with helpful info on the internet.

I do admit I am sometimes put off by the fact that I can not simply "win" though. I am totally enjoying it thus far though. I had gotten into Star Trek Bridge Commander before this And I loved it. It was nice to have that level of control over your ship. I don't miss it though.

EVE is a great game. It's not really that complicated once you get rolling, everything is very practical. The problem is that most people go into an MMO just wanting to get to the "endgame" as soon as possible, and EVE doesn't really allow you to do that. There is no clearly defined "endgame", and it really takes time to advance, regardless of how often you play.

This mythical EVE-with-twitch-controls game did exist, albeit in a slightly dumbed down form - it was called Earth and Beyond - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_&_Beyond

When EA shut it down, they gave us all free passes to EVE, which was just starting up at the time.

While I agree that EVE was much more complex and pretty, it had all the fun of an excel spreadsheet. E&B let you walk around stations and manually fly your ship.

This is the second time I have felt old reading Destructoid today... ;)

I miss Earth & Beyond!

It was the first mmorpg i ever played and to make things really sad, EA shut down Earth & Beyond on September 22, 2004. My birthday.

On the topic of the book release:
CCP said in one of their dev blogs, that the book was released after the game because the book contains "spoilers" (?).
Go figure.

On the topic of twitch controls:
Don't quote me on this but, there is a new MMO in the works that seems to be similar to EVE but will have twitch controls.
It is called Jumpgate Evolution.

On the topic of soloing:
The expansion is trying to address this problem by giving you something in between corp play an soloing. If you sign up with a militia, you can still solo, but you have the choice to join your militia fleet at any point and go kick some ass.
Just remember that by joining, you also enter into a permanent war and will be a valid target even in hi-sec for the opposing force.

On the topic of stations and leaving your ship:
This has been confirmed to be included in the near future.
You will be able to walk around stations and mingle.
You will also be able to change you character appearance.

On the topic of planet exploration:
They say that they are working on something but not to get our hopes up. It will take a very long time to do.
