EVE Online coming to Steam photo

Today Valve Studios announced that EVE Online, arguably the most popular space based MMO's, is coming to Steam.  The addition of EVE Online to the Steam library marks the first MMO to be added to the Steam repertoire.

To celebrate EVE's arrival a free 21-day trial of the ubiquitous space opera MMO will be made available to all Steam members in addition to a $5 discount for the first full month of EVE goodness.  If you've played the game or listened the obssessive ranting of one of its players you know EVE Online is already a fantastic game, I can't wait to see what happens to it in the capable hands of Valve Studios. I love these beautiful b*stards more every day.

Hit the jump for the full press release.

EVE ONLINE PUTS THE MMO IN STEAM

Launching With 21-Day Free Trial and Steam Special Price for Full Game

Bellevue, Washington and Reykjavik, Iceland - January 22, 2008 - EVE Online, the award winning massively multiplayer online (MMO) game from CCP, is coming to Steam, a leading platform for the delivery and management of PC games and digital content with over 13 million accounts worldwide.

To celebrate the launch of Steam's first massively multiplayer online game offering, a special 21-day trial period for EVE will be available, free of charge, to all Steam gamers. Steam gamers will also save $5 off their first full month of EVE Online.

"Launching EVE on Steam means the addition of another fantastic PC game and the introduction of MMOs on Steam," said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. "The team at CCP continues to expand EVE's universe and gameplay for the legions logging in to play each month, just as we continue to expand Steam's consumer and developer features."

EVE Online is a leader in online gaming technology, hosting hundreds of thousands of players in the same persistent universe. The latest of the EVE Online expansions, which are always free for players, introduces a graphic update of gargantuan proportions and a host of new gameplay features. Every ship, station, and stargate is rendered in an amazing splendor of spacefaring sights.

"We are immensely excited and honored that EVE Online will be the first MMO on Steam," said Magnus Bergsson, VP of Sales at CCP. "Steam has been the leading online distribution platform for a long time and home to some of the most dedicated gamers around, so we couldn´t think of a better fit for EVE Online."

Yes dtoid, JOIN ME.

13th Dragon, can you put that in a memo and entitle it "Shit We Already Know"?

Also, I guess this is good for Eve, but despite its beautiful screenshots, I can't get interested in this game no matter what is said.

To save me some googling because I'm a lazy ass, can anybody give a general overview of this game and list some of its features? It sounds interesting, but I don't really know all that much about it. I'd like to know a little more about it before I decide to invest any time in it and I'd like to hear a Dtoider's opinion about it.

Ive tried EvE before and while I enjoy it, it just takes way to much time to get anywhere.

In order to have much of the fun, you need to reach the end game, which can take literally over a year of actual play. Not to mention that unlike at least WoW maxed out players hit a wall for the most part, in Eve you can continue to gain money, which widens the gap more due to how large of a role economics plays in Eve.

It definitely takes a certain type of person to play it. It requires a lot of research to figure out what to do and how to best do it. But it has so much depth that it's worth it. I'm the type of person who can handle it but if you really like WoW you might not like this.

EvE: Online...I'm ashamed to say I've never played EvE.

Is this a more quality game than WOW?

It seems when you think MMO these days, WOW is all you get to pop up. Strike that, come up? No...

Think of? Yeah thats better.

Apparently I am pretty out of the PC gaming loop at this point because, why the hell do we care if already available games are now available on steam?

I never got into Eve Online because I needed some form of instant gratification and it felt drawn out when I played it.

Hey Aerox, I'm willing. I tried the 14 day trial a little while ago and liked it. A longer one could give me reason to buy the game, if it's good.

Argh! Don't tempt me Aerox! I'm already involved with another MMO that isn't WoW.

I've got a friend that's way into this game, and all he drones about is how great it is.

I think I'll be checking EVE out again, if nothing else to see how much prettier it's gotten since the Trinity patch. Also, Blizzard needs to get its act together and hop on the Steam bandwagon as well.

Hey guys, if you really would like i could give you a few points on EVE that make it stand out.... or maybe i will just add this link.

http://www.eve-online.com/trinity/index.html

I have to agree with the current EVE players on here, its not your quick fix... Eve has a brilliant training system that involves time, REAL time, you dont have to click the mouse button a million times to get to level 20 (or some equivalent) instead the system works on REAL time hours/days. Low level skills take anything from a couple hours to a week. Higher skills can go as long a a month and more.

This game is on a scale so large it will HAVE to take that long. I myself have not played for 2 months, but still have my account running skill training. And when i get on next week, :) oh the joy!!!!

I enjoyed it (I used to be addiced to Frontier-Elite2) but because i'm employed and have things to do other than play Eve i didnt progress fast enough for me to warrent the subscription. If the sub was cheaper id play it again.

I've tried this game out at least tree times now, and I have fun for a few weeks every time, but I guess I just don't have what it takes to get anywhere near endgame.

I'll stick to wow instead - instant gratification and the constant lure of the next reward hanging in front of my nose.
