European parliament wants a panic button for MMOs photo

The European Parliament, in a stunning display of illogical thinking, has decided that what parents need to protect their children from MMOs is a "red button" to shut games down in the event of a crisis. Apparently computers in Europe don't have off switches and keep children trapped in front of the screen with big metal arms or something, because there's no way a parent could stop a kid playing a computer game before now, right?

"Parents should have a "red button" to disable a game they feel is inappropriate for their child," claims the EP Internal Market Committee. "Until PEGI online is up and running, the report proposes fitting consoles, computers or other game devices with a "red button" to give parents the chance to disable a game or control access at certain times."

This is akin to buying a brand new telephone just in case you get burgled and need to call the cops, even if you already have a phone. It seems like a rather arbitrary and useless idea. Still, considering how powerless parents seem to be when it comes to disciplining their little sh*tmunchers, they might need all the help they can get.

To be fair, the European Parliament is not being "anti-game," it's just being rather stupid. It recognizes that games can provide a whole host of benefits. It seems to me that the Euro Parliament just wanted to add something to make parents feel better, and this was the best placebo they could come up with.

Computers and consoles already have one of these. It's called an "off" switch. >.>

How about a switch to turn "on" parenting?

A good smack across the back of the head never hurt is a better substitution for a "panic" button. Calling it a panic button seems a bit extreme too.

Just read this on the BBC site. Was awestruck by its stupidity. If parents really want a "red button" so much all they've got to do is get a red felt pen out and colour in the existing POWER BUTTON! I mean, I've followed the pro/anti-video game debate for some time and I've never heard anyone ask for a big red button until now. So I guess in some ways the European Parliament are forward thinkers. They get that parents are so fucking dumb unless but button is big and red they won't have a clue how to turn it off and will end up chewing the power cable or something.

Alternatively, if they don't want their kids playing adult-rated games so much DON'T BUY THEM ADULT RATED GAMES.

It's an overly dramatic "parental controls" implementation.

Microsoft already has this on the 360, cable boxes have this feature, TVs have this feature, but the PC (out of the box anyway) does not.

While I don't agree alarmist legislation is the way to go, the software (or documentation) should be made available on how to use the features clearly. There's definitely some money to be made here.

It's just so sad and hopeless. Parents just want another reason to blame someone else instead of themselves.

But in retrospect, at least there are a few parents out there acting like they care for their children enough to want this 'red button' installed.

Soon it'll be something else, like a red button on the children themselves to turn them off if they are doing something the parents don't like.

Just more evidence to show how utterly brainless and pointless MEPs are.

Are these for the same parents who

- obviously know that the kid is playing the game
- most likely bought the game for the kid, and
- never bothered to research it themselves?

What a pathetic disgrace. George Carlin would have a field day with this one.

Or you could, you know, tell your kids no. What a thought- a parent telling their crotch dropping what to do.

Seriously, how do people live this way?

Remember when you mum would switch the TV off and you'd just pause the game but pretend it was totally gone!?

Also, hiding controls in the top cupboard.

Parents just need to talk to their kids... Not have distant red buttons.

I think were they're getting at is a way to turn of the game without the kids being able to turn it on as soon as they turn around. A bit redundant to parental controls, but its just something to keep the older generations entertained until the DIE!

I have that exact button on my keyboard. It doesn't actually fit into any of the key spots though so it sits there loose.

The truly amusing thing about this is that parents who get this button installed already don't have enough balls to just turn the PC off or tell their kid "no" so there is no way they will use this. It will just be another idle threat that the kids will immediately ignore and then the parents will start crying that the button is ineffective and that they need something else to raise their children for them.

Being a father of 4 and a mmorpg player I cannot understand how people have trouble stopping their kids from playing. Mine always stop when told ( sure I can see they don't want too but they do). I guess its just a matter of parents don't get involved enough in their kids lives. Mine, we play Wii and xbox together and I let them run around in my mmorpgs under my supervision(I know what kind of asshammers can play these games). We never have issues and my kids love the game time (and when they can finally beat me at a game with skill instead of me letting them win). Panic button...cmon try hitting the parenting button first lamers

all they should do is announce that all computers have been updated with an alt-F4 command that will shut down anything that is working on the screen. they can even release red alt and F4 buttons if that will make parents more happy

Seriously, I have a mental image of a mother or father frantically punching the keyboard, while their child stares, dull-eyed at a screen, screaming "turn it off, turn it off, where's the damn button, oh no, it's GOT HIM" while the grandparents cry in the background. I mean, does it really have to be a big red panic button? In what instance is a parent going to freak out over an MMO so much that they can't simply say "Alright, turn it off, that's enough, now time for bed"? What's next, a panic button that puts the child into a coma everytime a bad word is said on TV? An emergency hammer to knock a child unconscious if they won't eat their asparagus?

"REMOVE THE POWER CABLE" - they can't turn on the computer if they don't have the power cable.

Seriously, I have a mental image of a mother or father frantically punching the keyboard while their child stares at a screen, sreaming "turn it off, turn it off, where's the damn button, oh no, it's GOT HIM" while the grandparents cry in the background.

That's pathetic. Other parents need to grow a pair.

My young fella stepped outta line one too many times and now his ipod, computer and bike are all locked away. He gets picked up straight after school and made to stay in his room until homework is done then he has chores. Only then can he watch TV. He fuckin hates it and so he should, cos it will keep happening if he fucks up.
