Europe wants blood: No More Heroes not censored now? photo

From what we heard earlier, it seemed that the European version of No More Heroes would be censored. Now, publisher Rising Star Games is doing its best to clarify matters, saying that the European version is not censored, and that it shares the same visuals and content as the Japanese version.

"There are two versions of No More Heroes that are going to be published in the West," said Rising Star's Martin Defries. "Ours, which will be drawn down from our parent company, Marvelous Interactive, which is directly from the Japanese iteration of the game, and there will be a version in the US that is a full-on gore, beheadings, dismemberment."

Also, it looks like Marvelous Entertainment and game designer Suda 51 are doing some clean-up work/damage control with this statement:

"First, let me say how honored I am that everyone in Europe is expecting No More Heroes. The sales point of this game is action. Both I and Wada san have concentrated on making the best possible action game for Nintendo Wii.

"We have chosen to release in Europe the same version as has shipped in Japan considering the broadly growing Wii market. We are certain you will definitely enjoy playing it."

They're correct, it's technically not being censored. They're just choosing to release the "less bloody" version in Europe. Almost definitely as a result of avoiding any of the nonsense that happened with Manhunt 2.

This article confused me. The headline says it isn't censored but the actual article says that they are receiving the Japanese version. The Japanese version is the one with black pixels and coins, there is no blood. It is the game that has the least violence, so I guess you would call it the censored version. I'm not sure where you're going with this.

As Mxyzptlk said it is questionable whether or not you call this censorship, but Europe is getting the least violent version.

Suda51 said he makes games for american audiences, hence the "true" version should be considered the american release. The japanese version is censored, therefore the european one is too. This is a debate about semantics, and while I don't really have a problem with that, the fact that it very much is being censored for europe should not be brushed over.

As an American, I would like to requires the ability to turn off the 'extra' gore. It's just annoying.

Does anyone know if Killer7 was censored for Europe and Japan? There was WAY more fucked up stuff in that besides your usual high pressure blood sprays.

Or, maybe it's just the fact that No More Heroes is on the Wii...

Censorship + plausible spin = two versions.

At least we don't get as many highschool incidents in Europe, eh! Damn those bloody videogames...

I think the only major change in the western versions of Killer7 was the robot ghost effect they put on some of the characters voices.

I'd like the ability to switch to the non-gore version in the USA version. I think the black dissolve and coins is cooler, actually.

Ok, we don't get the "censored" version since ours is the same as the Japanese release, supposedly Suda 51's preferred version.

Soo.. what do you call the American version? I'd love to hear the justification these guys come up with for the changes made. "Our research of the North American market and our target audience there, has led to a number of changes. First there will be blood. Lots of it. Also, the main character will gain the ability to kill kittens and strangle whores. We'd like to remind everyone that this, in no way, reflects the nature of the majority of the American public, just the small deviant minority that makes up our target audience." Hmmm... no, doesn't sound quite right.

Or we could, you know... be getting a censored version.

They are just trying to get around the word "censored". Technically it's not, because it's their own decision to do it, not the BBFC or other entity telling them they have to. Pretty lame any way you slice it...

There was that one interview with Suda where he said he wanted to make NMH even more violent than Manhunt 2, so there is no way that the watered down, no-blood version is what represents his "preferred vision".

Personally I thought the effects in the European version still looked great. It was stylized and fits with the whole slot machine theme he had going. How does it not fit in?

Both versions look great, just enjoy the damn game.

"Europe wants blood: No More Heroes not censored now?"

Actualy, what he said is that it IS censored, since the Japanese version is censored, too, and the European version is the same as the Japanese version.

But surely for something to be censoredm content has to be removed from the game. Suda51 stated that gore was added to the American version>

Either way, I don't really care. I'll still be just as happy with it even if it doesn't have blood in it.

Stupid PR reps. You know that they wanted to do a full-on release but are too scared by the fallout from Manhunt 2.
