Europe = less than a quarter of Xbox Live photo

European Xbox VP Chris Lewis has revealed that only a quarter of European gamers make up Xbox Live's total membership, and has blamed the language barrier. He states, unsurprisingly, that most of Europe's XBL users are in the UK, and that the US has the "lion's share" of Xbox Live members.

"We don't normally break out the European element of our Live membership," stated Lewis in an interview with Edge magazine. "I mean, I know what it is, but I don't want to get rapped on the knuckles by being too explicit with you. I will say to you as a percentage of that overall total, it's just less than a quarter."

"And I'll tell you also that a large part of that is in the UK, partly because of the language aspect, the fact is you need, on a community service like Live, enough people of a similar language orientation to get a community so that it starts to really blow out."

Funny thing is, he doesn't reference what is probably the more likely problem here -- the price. Microsoft doesn't really account for currency differences in its prices, as our expensive MS Points would demonstrate. With the UK facing its own risks of recession, maybe we don't have a spare £40 (almost $80 USD) to throw at a year's Gold subscription. Also, with a lot of Europeans being PlayStation fans, I'm sure many of us are enjoying a free PSN instead.

It's $100 a year for XBL in Australia.

Fuck. No. That's not even counting micro-transaction rape.

O_o....So, is Microsoft claiming that their service isn't selling in Europe because there be too many "foreign languages"?

Sure, ok, thats it. You've figured it out. It has nothing to do with the ridiculous price of multiplayer gaming that you force people to pay just to interact with their 360's despite the fact these people are ALREADY paying for an internet service.

Noooo, it's because they don't speak english. Sure, Ok.

I had to renew my gold membership recently and I was quite reluctant to spend £40 on it but I caved in the end... because I was lucky enough to get a friend discount :-)

That being said I always end up in a match with some random French people.

Missed opportunities. I can only imagine the shitton of revenue if MS stole PES2009 as an exclusive and made real international competitions on Live happen.

Not that I care about either, I'm happy with the ever decreasing XBLA prices of my american account. Which is ironic since I just pay the same price as you american do :/

You wouldn't know considering the amount of foreign people that turn up in rooms. It happens all the time in Gears.

Lots of non-Americans probably create North American Live accounts and play that way.

In China, I connect with 'heaps' (to borrow an aussie word) of Australians and people from the UK. I wouldn't call the Queen's English the same language as America's evolved, modern English ;)

I'm not surprised. We really need more Europeans on Live, I'm tired of hearing 13-year-old kids who insult me in girls' voices and annoying rednecks who call me a homo whenever I get shot. Then again, anyone who listened to Podcastle 16 knows what would happen to any British girls once they're heard.

Sounds like bullshit to me, I hear Europeans all the damn time on PSN. Hell whole rooms full of Aussies as well. They speak English, broken and hard to understand English but they do it.
