Europe gets Super Paper Mario in September ... are we meant to be grateful? photo

I apologize for the negativity of my demeanour today, but the corporations are doing plenty to get on my nerves lately, like this 'gift' from Nintendo. After months and months and months of waiting, the system that still doesn't have the full launch lineup of games in the PAL territories is finally providing us with Super Paper Mario. On September 14th. Yeah, thanks for that. It's not like certain other consoles are providing near-simultaneous worldwide releases consistently while you drag your heels giving us one game worth playing on your accursed machine, is it?

Arguing that the Wii doesn't have many decent titles is an old and trite activity, but it's one I'd be less inclined to make if Nintendo actually gave Europe all the games it had available in a timely manner. Maybe I'm spoiled by the fact that games elsewhere are released usually within a week of the Stateside launch, but I just don't have the patience for this kind of crap anymore and as a result, no longer care about Wii games. Why should I get excited for a game when I know it'll be almost a year after everyone's finished it that I'll be able to start it? And no, Mario Strikers is not a valid trade-off.

As it is, I'm not too interested Super Paper Mario anymore. I cared back in March, but that was back in March. I have more important games to get in September now. For a company that claims to be "serious about online gaming," Nintendo is doing an awful job of making sure the whole world can play its games at the same time -- something I consider a must for online play in the current generation. We only just had Pokémon Diamond and Pearl released last week, now that the rest of the world has had time to train their pocket monster teams to unbeatable levels. So thanks for that, Nintendo. Seriously, I'm sure those not yet driven to importing (something Nintendo insultingly fights) gives thanks.  Hit the jump for the press release, as borrowed from Evil Avatar.

31st July, 2007- It’s time to brush up on your origami skills as everyone’s favourite plumber embarks upon an all-new quest that is truly out of this dimension in Super Paper Mario on Wii! With the power to flip between 2D and 3D, Mario must embark on a thrilling adventure to reunite his lost friends and save the world. Super Paper Mario launches across Europe for Wii on 14th September 2007.

As with the previous two games in the Paper Mario series, all characters are as flat as a sheet of paper. However, our hero Mario can manipulate the environment around him to his benefit, opening up new paths and possibilities with the ability to ‘flip’ from 2D to 3D at will. This ability comes in handy throughout the game and is crucial to the progress of the player in his rescue mission. Seemingly impassable barriers are only as thin as a piece of paper when viewed in 3D allowing our hero to walk past with ease and fearsome 2D enemies expose their weak spots in 3D.

The adventure begins when the mysterious Count Bleck, a mad genius who is determined to fulfil an ancient prophecy, kidnaps Princess Peach, Bowser and Luigi. Bleck forces Peach to marry Bowser so that he can unite good and evil and create a Chaos Heart that will destroy the universe. Only Mario escapes his clutches and now it is up to him to rescue his friends from the evil Count and save the world!

Players start out controlling Mario, but later on can unlock and control Princess Peach, Bowser and Luigi as well. Each character has their own unique ability allowing them to overcome different puzzles and obstacles. Also lending a helping hand are small sidekicks called Pixls, which Mario will encounter during his journey. Each of these Pixls has a different ability, which can be used to aid the player on their journey. These range from Tippi, who will give information on enemies and items pointed at with the Wii Remote, Carrie who will lift Mario over impassable gaps, and Dottie who can shrink a character to miniscule proportions.

The majority of on-screen action is controlled simply by holding the Wii Remote sideways using only the Control Pad and two buttons. However, the motion sensing abilities of the Wii Remote also add a dynamic edge to the gameplay. Unique special moves and abilities can be activated by shaking and moving the controller; so that players can not only set up chains and earn bonus points when defeating enemies, but also use abilities like fire, thunder and ice attacks.

Super Paper Mario mixes the role-playing game-style adventure of its predecessors with the platform action of classic Mario games from yesteryear, bringing players a deep, entertaining quest that is truly the best of both worlds.

So make sure your platform gaming skills are honed as Super Paper Mario bends, twists and flips its way into stores. Super Paper Mario launches across Europe for Wii on 14th September 2007 at an estimated retail price of around £35.

Man, I can't remember the last time a cool game came out for my birthday or many games really, maybe I should lay off the pot, but that's not the point. Wii60, more like DSixty hahahaha see what I did there?! Because I'd rather have a DS and 360 than a Wii and a 360. oh snap.

I too am concerned and exhausted by this. When I started noticing these poor attempts like "Well you get minish cap before anyone else!" Oh thanks Nintendo. I managed to complete that the same day I bought it and so I was still covered by the returns policy so I went got another game, one that I still have in my collection today. Which I guess is a plus.

I thought to myself "Maybe they will clean this shit up and sort it out when stuff goes online, they can't give other territories a head start" but no.

Well, at least I can stand on and off a white plastic pad.

Rosseh: Yep, and the whole "well you get this ONE game first" crap is pointless anyway. We shouldn't HAVE to have games months ahead of anyone else in ANY situation, let alone as a lone bone thrown. Which rhymes.

All I want is for Nintendo to get serious and release games sensibly, like other systems.

Are there a lack of translators in the world? Maybe Nintendo should, you know, hire some good ones who can translate fast, from Japanese to all of the EU languages they can cram on a disc/cartridge? Just seems to make sense to make the most of the hype at the time, whether it's in printed press or online.

Various magazines show off what our cousins over the pond are happily playing away and have said for as long as I can remember "Coming to our shores when you no longer care for said title" ...

Don't get it. It was pretty awful in the middle part. For a game that boasts too much reading, the reading in the middle was pointless and of the, "Yes, you got this heart, now go get another!" sort. 7/10, and only for the awesome final boss fight.

No, I agree completely with Jim Sterling here, as another English person in the same situation. I was talking to a friend the other day about Nintendo and Europe.

I don't think you understand how frustrating it is to Europeans. Nintendo consistently charges highest over here, and to rub some salt into the wounds, releases much later than elsewhere.

I don't want to say I hate Nintendo. They make GREAT, BRILLIANT games. Arguably the very best. Also fantastic consoles. No problems there. But then they treat Europe like a stupid dog under the table and occasionally throw us what everyone else is done with.

And also Reggie's constant smarmy "We are making so much cash now!" boasting is just a kick in the teeth.

/end rant

I remember not too long ago, like a month, when I got a newsletter from nintendo telling me that Metroid Pinball was just out. I had already completed Starfox DS and returned it and got half way through Final Fantasy 12, Okami and completed God hand by the time that came out over here.
Although, to cut Ninty some slack those other games, God Hand and Okami took quite a while to come out here, nothing compared to Nintendo though.

Okami
US: September 19, 2006
Europe: February 2, 2007

Metroid Prime Pinball
US: October 24, 2005
Europe: June 22, 2007

God Hand
US: October 10, 2006
Europe: February 16, 2007

Starfox Command
US: August 28, 2006
Europe: January 26, 2007

FF12
US: October 31, 2006
Europe: February 23, 2007

I haven't played Metroid Pinball yet but man, that must be like the longest RPG made in existence. I think Nintendo's localisation team is run by 3D Realms.

I won't deny the PS2 was quite bad for it as well, but Sony has always at least appeared to care about Europe, even if it does shaft the territory from time to time. Sony has some terrible PR worldwide, but in Europe it's always managed to looked fantastic in the eyes of the many.

dude, jim, as an amercan who lived in london for a while, I know it fucking sucks to be over there. I had to import Hotel Dusk from my hometown because the UK didn't get it for 2 months afterward. I always thought it was hilarious how game stores there are hyping games that had been out for ages in the States.

D00de, it's not just nintendo. Dont forget Sony shafted you guys with the PS3.

And to be fair, you guys got Strikers in late may. It may not be as good as New Paper Mario, but man, it's got some charming features.

Yep, not only on NES, but also on PSN, theres been like 3 DL games that have come faulty to UK only?(sony is fixing it dough, so theres a little love there).

I know the only console that really is catering EU is xbox, cuz Nintendo & Sony really are raping UK, AU, Brazil & Mexico with late releases, more expensive than in the US or JP.

So you guys need to see things in others eye's to understand the frustration.

In other news:Jim bought a pet Tortoise which he put in his stairs and tried to get as many 1up's till the next Mario game was released.

Topgear: Oh Sony definitely did, and I gave Sony shit for it. Sony did, however, offer free HDTVs to go along with it at launch for a short while, which was amazing PR and helped the console over here a lot. It's funny how in the least cared about territory, Sony makes itself look real good.

Late console aside, as far as I know, the wait time for software on the PS3 isn't anywhere near as bad as for the Wii. I hope Sony realizes that it needs to keep software releases as consistent worldwide as possible. That's a very important plus point to me.

The problem with the UK is we are part of europe but we speak English. While I hear most older people in foreign speaking countries who play videogames play them in English anyway, Nintendo wants to keep that accessible, friendly to everyone image and to people who don't notice over seas launch dates they're happy little Timmy can play it.

Everyone in europe hates us anyway we should just leave haha.

XBOX is lacking the movie downloads over here.

In the old days I could at least say I have a nice piece of solid built equipment, but that was before my Wii's GPU overheated and I found out I have to have it replaced entirely losing Mii information and such. Wankfest.

no need to interact with the likes of those sorts.....

BTW, with the time i spent in Paris, it seems like French people are the biggest dorks on the planet. they love comic books, have ubisoft, etc. they are nerds. It's great, I love France, and the UK as much.

Nintendo has NEVER cared about Europe, they can claim whatever they like, but those living in the UK will know better.

Quick example: Launch of the N64, Turok is out as a launch game but Nintendo decided to delay the release of any official memeory cards, bearing in mind that only first party cartridges featured saving facilities. Great.

Thankfully things have changed now, I'm really looking forward to that Trauma Centre: Second Opinion, this time you can play co-op two player and online, should be out by september...oh wait, you mean here in the UK we haven't even had the first game? So there is a real possibility that the Americans will get the sequel before us here in the UK can play the original. Great.

Nintendo really care about their UK fan base don't they.

I also don't understand that whole "too much text" criticism. Isn't Paper mario meant to be a send up, post modern version of old school gaming? The text is the equivalant of voice dubbing in Kung Fu movies, it's low-fi and cheesy and surely that's the point.

Anyway, I looked forward to this game so long ago that I think I've caught up with my original enthusiasm from ages ago and destroyed it in the present day.

That is fair.

But, more than anything else, Super Paper Mario is a freaking RPG. A real-time action RPG with light platforming elements. RPGs tend to mean that there is dialog. Harsh reality, I know.

Can't say I blame you Jim - the waiting does indeed suck. It's always been thus with Nintendo in Europe - at least with the Cube we had the nice n' easy Freeloader to solve our problems, but I can't see a similar thing ever working for the Wii due to the online system updates.

They even added an update so that you can't use a Freeloader to play foreign GC games on a Wii! So now I have to dust off my Gamecube if I want to play any imported cube games - kind of stupid when I have a supposedly backwards-compatible Wii. And I completely agree that we're unlikely to see Brawl or Galaxy this year. Bah.

Zardoz: to be fair, I think we do have the original Trauma Centre game - it's the DS version, I don't think there were any other versions.

But still, I think TC: Second Opinion was a Wii launch title in the States, and the game isn't due out here for another ten days, in bloody August 2007.

So, um.......yeah - it still sucks The Big One....

I chipped my Wii only because I got fed up with waiting for the european SPM release. It was either that or import a US Wii. So I ended up going the pirate route. They screw me over, I screw them over. Everyone else should do the same. This is just not acceptable anymore.

Big up to Sony and the PS3 for showing the way being region free.

Oh and SPM is a freaking amazing game. So get that excitement up again.

@Jim: I've been thinking about the same thing. I'm not entirely sure about the region coding of the games, but there are definately region-free patches for playing illegal content. So they should work for imported games too I guess.

The thought of importing Wii games from the US (nice exchange rate!) sounds really crazy to me. I really can't belief that I'll be forced to mod a console to play games I would buy. The Wii was supposed to be my first 100% unmodded console since my Mega Drive..

Pew: Pfft your currency is lame. I'm starting to worry, these new £20 notes have begun circulation and they look scarily like euro notes. It's all an evil plot to force the euro on us, Bastards!

@Jim'n'Pew: Exactly the same. I can't believe the thought of modding a Nintendo console crosses my mind. It looks really quite safe too. A little less than freeloader but more than other chips. It's completely removeable.

But if they ever got into online more I'm guessing it would be hard to play multiplayer. Seeing as you'd have to run the chip while online and I don't know if that would effect it in some way.

I dream of a world where every game is released worldwide simultaneously.

@Rosseh: Lame currency perhaps! But you can buy 0.5 beers with it compared to before the euro. Hurraaaaaah shit.

The mod is based on the same hardware exploit as the GCN btw. Nintendo only changed some "password/passcode" from lowercase to uppercase or something like that. As far as I know, it doesn't change anything for online, so you shouldn't be detected. You should even be able to run backups online like retail discs, in case you are poor or have disc-scratching kids. You definately can run backups and still download VC games and such, so I don't think online will be a problem....

...except for online matchmaking and games, OOHHHH!

That's pretty lame.

I'm sure the excuse..er..reason is that they have to translate all that damn text into Spanish and French in addition to the already available English translation (which might have to be edited to remove any references to the word "spastic," you never know).

I just don't understand why games take months to get translated. Seriously, do they hire a single person to do the entire job or something?

I'm sure the trend of late European releases is what bothers you the most, but as for SPM, I wouldn't worry too much. It really isn't worth the wait.

However:
"Why should I get excited for a game when I know it'll be almost a year after everyone's finished it that I'll be able to start it?"

Um, because playing videogames isn't about playing them first, it is about having an enjoyable experience. It is a pastime, not a competition to play the latest and greatest.

Okay, maybe I didn't explain that very well. Basically, what I mean to say is that when everyone's getting all excited for Metroid, Super Smash Bros, et al, I find myself unable to muster interest because unlike everyone else, myself and fellow Europeans have a far, far longer wait, so it's not worth getting hyped for yet -- it'll just be excruciating.

I'm no longer excited for Wii games because I don't know when I'll get them. By the time I DO get them, everyone else will have completed and finished talking about them. No, it's not a race to play them first, but when everyone else has bought, played, completed and talked about them, and you get them when everyone else is done caring, it's just ... shit, y'know?
