EU PS3s to have crippled backwards compatibility, syphilis photo

More bad news for the eastern side of the Atlantic; Sony's PlayStation 3 console is not going to have the same kind of wonderful backwards compatibility that US gamers have enjoyed in the recent past. Of course, according to Sony, that's a good thing! Here's the justification for that mind-boggling statement:

"Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3," Sony Computer Entertainment said in a statement.

Stunning. Until we actually get a full list of which PlayStation 1 and 2 games are being left out in the cold, we won't know just how badly Sony has shafted Europe, but you can be sure that they didn't use lube.

Hit the jump for the full press release from Sony (and big ups to forum-goer lawl for the heads up).

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces Hardware Specification of PLAYSTATION®3 for Europe

London, 23 February 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) to be launched in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia on 23rd March 2007 would utilise a new hardware specification.

The European PS3 will feature the Cell Broadband Engine™, 60 GB hard disc drive, Blu-ray Disc player, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXIS™ wireless controller. It also embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation® (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation®2 (PS2) titles.

“PS3 is first and foremost a system that excels in playing games specifically designed to exploit the power and potential of the PS3 system,” said David Reeves, President of SCEE. “Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology.”

Some additional PS2 titles will become compatible on the PS3 system through regular downloadable firmware updates, which will be made available through the PLAYSTATION®Network, from http://www.playstation.com or via PS3 game discs, with the first update planned for the launch date of the 23rd March 2007.

Users will be able to check whether their titles are compatible with PS3 at http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc. This site will be available on 23rd March to meet launch day.

1. A device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch is required to output 7.1 ch audio, supported by Dolby TrueHD or a similar format, from the HDMI OUT connector.

2. This system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. DTS-HD 7.1 Ch audio is output from a 5.1 or lower channel.

3. Usability of all storage media types is not guaranteed.

4. Certain PlayStation 2 format software titles may not perform properly on this system. Visit faq.eu.playstation.com/bc for the latest information regarding compatible titles

This really gets my goat.

I stuck by sony up until now, always saying good things about them, but this is just ridiculous.
How hard is it to just do something right for Europe ONCE!

Fuck shit cunt!

Is this surprising at all? If someone made a post next week that said that the Euro PS3's would also be fuschia-colored "because Sony wants to focus on their bright future", I don't know that I'd think twice about it...

I don't think the assumption makes sense. Sony said they won't focus much on retrocompatibility, but how does this statement imply that Europe won't get at least what's already there?
lawl's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/23/2007 07:37

Xenon, they are TAKING OUT the PS2 chips and attempting software emulation, we have no idea how many games they have ready, if any and they'll never be able to get all 8000 games that are playable now working through software.

This is very interesting if the author's right.

http://www.sfdiplomat.net/ reckons that the market research group mentioned in Yahoo news story, 'Vertical Market Technologies' doesn't exist. Sounds like Sony could be making up spokespersons to make bad news sound palatable.

Man if I was remotely interested in the PS3 I would be pissed. We wait an extra 4 months to get it then have to pay substantially more than our US counterparts to get a lesser machine with even shittier BC support...

didnt they say they were gonna eventually switch it over to software emulation awhile ago? i remember all the hub-bub when they said that it has the ps2 chips in it, they mentioned they were gonna switch it. it is not surprising to see that they are gonna test it first on europe. cause lets face it, all game companies hate europe. so wont this soon be the case in the US and japan?

Hmm.. at the risk of sounding like a fanboy unaware of Sonys idiotic anthics, isnt that the EXACT same statement they have anywhere about sony's backward compatibility? I have read that twice and it doesnt say ANYWHERE there will be less Backwards compability than In America or Japan.

Thanks for the Sony FUD but thats not news.

And Snaileb Save it, Im not even going to read your obvious response to this comment so dont bother.

peace.

Oh wait, just read that again (from other source mind you) a Sony spokeperson actually did said "reduced backwards compability" oh CRAP! I sure hope they dont mean GOW2 wont work from the box. Bad Sony bad!

Please Ernest reread your article, you dont even mention the word "reduced" in this post, and the "official statement" is completely unclear.

Also, what the heck is he supposed to do with an official statement to make it more clearer? Edit it?

Ashdate: [sigh] thats exactly the point, the Sony PR is the one who said "reduced" the official statement says NOTHING about it. David Reeves is the one that said "is not as good or "is reduced" the official statement though is basically the same they issued when they had the same problem in America at launch. (it doesnt make any comparison)

"in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment"

really ? and when is THE FUTURE???

the only thing Sony has been pushing is the Blu-ray drive.
it seems they sold all these PS3's with NO GAMES.
forcing buyers, to pick up all these Blu-Ray titles.
(no one wants to feel stupid after buying a $600 ANYTHING)
so yeah Blu-Ray movie sales are up!! but what about
the F'N gamers???

i guess we have to wait til "THE FUTURE"

Cool, that makes my decision between a x360 and a PS3 a whole lot easier. So basically here in Europe we pay more to get less. Fine with me, I just decided I'm not gonna pay anything.

Sony will announce in the next two weeks they will require everyone who purchased a PS3 to pony up another $100 or they will remotely delete their savegames. Running the PS3 after this "update" requires a PSP attached at all times, which will now administer a genital-oriented electrical shock every ten minutes

It's kind of strange for Sony to take chips out of their systems and ask for more money..... I don't think their streamlining shit at this point. It just doesn't make sense unless they're actually NOT getting cheaper to make, and for the foreseeable future even. Does this mean that the price drop in the U.S./Japan will also come with this gimped version as well? Or will they just slip in this version and announce that all PS3s will now have limited backwards compatibility because of the "FUTURE"?

I hope this doesn't turn out badly. I already bought PS2 games in preparation for my intent to buy a PS3 in the future. Please don't tell me that I'll be forced to buy the PS2 as well, that would make the whole point of me skipping the PS2, buy its games, and play both PS2 and PS3 games on the PS3 moot.
