Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Fresh from Luc Bernard's Destructoid blog, here is the first footage from his WiiWare exclusive, Eternity's Child. This game has turned heads for its indie roots and unique visual appeal, and the footage shows off some old school platforming elements melded with the Wiimote-controlled heart targetting that we've heard about.

It looks simplistic, but nostalgic and thoroughly gorgeous. It kind of reminds me of Rayman after listening to The Cure too much. Hopefully we get some more videos soon to get a better idea of what this game can offer. It certainly looks pretty, but I'm hoping the gameplay is more involved than what's shown. Also, don't forget to check out our feature where Luc clears the air about his other project, Imagination Is The Only Escape.

Hrn, I'm not too gone on it. The art style is pretty good, and the backgrounds look great, but the animation is abysmal, and I'm of the opinion that animation is possibly the most important aspect of a 2D game's visual appeal. Also, having large chunks of scenery obscuring your view isn't terribly good design. Finally, having bullets(if that's what they were) such a soft colour isn't a great idea, they should be bright and stand out so that the player can see them more easily when a whole heap of shit's going on on the screen at once. This is intended to be constructive criticism, as I know bernard will probably read this.

Brad: I get what you're saying. I think some fluid animation would make this even more gorgeous. I also, however, get the kind of Gilliam-esque papercraft look going on.

This looks really interesting but I have to agree with Brad Drac. The animation is too much like a puppet rag doll and the eyes on the characters look too vacant and just creepy and there's too many obstacles blocking your view.... if those minor points are sorted out this looks like a winner!

What an original design. It's really pretty. O.O

I'd play it.

This video really doesn't give me anything to go on.

I'll probably play it anyway.

I was gonna write a nice long responce but it's pretty much already been said. Kinda confusing, bad, clunky animation and I think it looks a bit empty. But the music is nice and certain to create a unique cue amongst players, and the art style is okay, definitely unique even if a little underwhelming, unfortunately... I think the problem is just the lack of animation, the lack of activity in the game, the lack of sound.

I think you're probably showing us all you've done so far, and if I'm right, that's not good. Blowing your load too early, I believe is the phrase. Wait until you're in polish mode to start showing us content.

Also, Jim, It's time for me to call you out, I think it's been a while and I don't want to lose my touch. How come when Luc gets angry, you are supportive, but when the Space Giraffe dev gets angry, you are full of bile and cunt jizz?

"How come when Luc gets angry, you are supportive, but when the Space Giraffe dev gets angry, you are full of bile and cunt jizz?"

Luc got angry because people called his game a "Nazi torture" game.

Minter got angry because his game was shit and sold badly to a better one.

S'a difference. And if Luc gets upset at constructive criticism in this thread, I'll call him on it.

I'm going to preface this with the fact that I'm not defending Jeff. Jeff got angry because his game sold less than Frogger. It ultimately boils down to neglect of the indie game industry, although I understand there's a big difference between a game selling badly and a game being torched by the kind of ignorant, attention seeking, <cliché here> mainstream media that would do this. I mean, that article did make my blood simmer slightly, so I guess there is a difference.

I'm all for indie games ... GOOD ones. I hate this idea that a game has to sell well just because it's indie and anything less than success is disrespect for independence. While I agree that unique games should sell more, there's a world of difference between a good indie game and the shit Jeff Minter spat out.

It had no business doing well.

Yeah, your right... I guess my point was that it sold less than frogger. Not just less than Marathon or Doom or SFII or what have you - Frogger. In a choice between shitty old games and shitty new games, I'd go for shitty new games, because at least then I get a fresh shitty experience. Personally, I have my opinion on games like SG, but here isn't the place to talk about them.

While I've got your attention, I'm going to ram this down your throat. There were 6 buttons that draw your weapon in Mass Effect, not 3.

So I see using visuals that were cliché five minutes after Nightmare Before Christmas was first projected on a theater and using music that sounds like nondescript Castlevania music is the base for good gameplay in platformers now. Citing previous comments, the gameplay looks confusing, the animation bland and there are WAY too many hearts... Are they selling this at Hot Topic?

I forget who said the art looked deviantart esq but you know I'm begining to agree with them. The style seems very constrictive(in that it looks non-progressive), and after seeing it in action the movement looks very robotic and Newgrounds Flash-game like.

Crapsh00t at 03/11/2008 10:37
I'm going to have to second Neonie here... that looks alot like a Flash game.

I'm a sucker for great story and atmosphere, even if it comes along with bland gameplay, but I didn't see anything particularly engaging here. Understandably, the verdict is still out as the footage clocks in at a mere 25 seconds, but I'm not seeing the hype.

I can't judge this based on the gameplay. I do hope the Wii controls are a big part of the gameplay experience, because otherwise it could just be another PC platformer?

Why's everyone pumped about this? Stilted Flash-y animation? Splashing into a big bunch of hearts? That was the shittiest thing I've ever seen.

Only thing epic here is the music but the design/animation and floaty looking gameplay is underwhelming.Old 90's games like Astal or Lomaxx kicks this 2008 game to the gutter.

I like the "stop-motion-paper" look to the animation - i think you have to appreciate the kind of shit that Terry Gilliam did or... I can't think of any other examples of that kind of animation right now, but I know I've seen it. I think part of that is lost in translation to video, so that is why people aren't getting the full affect of the animation, but I can see the style he is going for and I think it looks good.

This looks like it could turn out to be a fun game, but I hope there is more to the action. I look forward to seeing more videos, but as of now, I'd at least give it a try.

I really like the art style, but I have no idea what is going on. The floaty animation doesn't help either. At first when the game first showed up here it looked really cool, but after seeing that video I'm starting to loose faith in the gameplay. It's possible that the game has a lot of development time left and everything will be awesome, but even if that's true why blow the hype wad this early?

Video is gone...

It is so sad to live in a time when accepting the reality of our history is too horrible for such a 'sensitive' audience...

That, or one of youtube's managers is a neo-nazi or a muslim.

And I didn't even get to see the gameplay!
