ESRB rates Alan Wake T for Teen... surprised? photo

Microsoft has confirmed today that Remedy's Alan Wake has been cleared by the ESRB, and will be rated... T?

Yup, that's right. The dark thriller can be played by adults and teens alike when it's released on May 18. What this means for you: Don't expect to hear Alan Wake say anything like "Oh sh*t, did you see that motherf**king car? It just moved, dude. It just flew in the f**king air and tried to kill me. Where the f**k's my God damned wife? This flashlight's a piece of s**t!" And then take off his clothes.

No, that's not happening in Alan Wake.

Are you surprised? Did you expect Alan Wake to get slapped with a "Mature" rating, and does it change how you feel about the upcoming title? It shouldn't -- the game is shaping up to be a hell of a number. Check out our recent preview for more details.

Should be a good game, time will tell

That's surprising. From the looks of it I thought it might go for the Silent Hill-type 'disturbing content' that might lead to an M rating. And now that I think it about it, I don't remember the last T-rated(or E-rated) game I even bought. I bought NSMBWii, but I'm drawing a blank on everything else.

I'm surprised, but not totally shocked, considering that you're defeating enemies with light instead of bullets.

Surprised? A little. Doesn't mean a game can't be good. But even Max Payne was rated M. I guess I just figured that with Remedy and the subject matter, or suspected subject matter, it would lead to an M rated game.

Still means next to nothing since I don't have a 360, but yeah, I am surprised.

Mirror's Edge was also rated T despite the use of fire weapons and language.

Somehow T games seem more interesting to me because they touch the topics in a more straight manner in a way.

Just mean no swearing and blood, which a game, even a thriller, doesnt necessarily
need

Since Alan Wake was always supposed to be an author, I would have expected him to use more sophisticated language anyway, so no.

you know how it goes.... you can get away with killing all people in town and burn all the forest creatures and you get a T, but if just one guy yells "fuck" when dying or a girl dies in a position where her undewear shows (both perfectly plausible and realistic things) then it's considered borderline porn.

I would have liked some nudity maybe a little 3 way action, some DP, or just forget it

When films are toned down to aim for a 12A rating, it's detrimental. This? Not so sure.
Won't be buying it anyway: Thanks for canceling the PC version, guys.

I am surprised because some disturbing content can lead to an M (and that game seems to have a lot of disturbing content), not for the language. I would actually be very dissapointed if he goes saying "Oh sh*t" all the time... that is a symptom of poor screenwriting.

I don't think the game's concept justifies even a 15+ rating. It's just not gory or centered around foul language or sexual content or anything like that. I don't think it was "dumbed down" for a T rating, that's just how the game is.

Well it doesn't mean the games gonna be bad but it does beg the question how dark can it be?

I mean this is the esrb, one swear or some flexed glutuses (no I don't know if I spelled that right) and BAM M rated.

How gritty can it be if it made it past their over sensitive asses with a T rating?

Not too long ago, I saw someone here on Dtoid (Don't remember who) comparing Alan Wake to Dead Space, so this teen rating is kinda surprising for me.

I'm not too surprised since it was already mentioned two hours ago in the preview. I couldn't care less about what the censorship board thinks and it has no baring on the quality of game.

A T rating is about more than if the people swear. Considering it's a horror (sort of) and thriller, that T rating makes me think of all those "scary" movies that came out with PG-13 ratings because they basically watered down the script to make it family friendly enough for a tamer rating.

Game like this, lower rating can point to them holding back, taming it down for a higher profit.
If it's a T rating simply because the story they wanted to tell didn't require the gore or swearing, then no big deal.
But if it is watered down for profit's sake...well, that's a slap in the face to fans of thrillers and/or horrors.
I'm not really saying the game is toned down or not, merely pointing out the possibilities to ponder for day one buyers that a T rating represents so they really thought about it before laying out 60 bucks.
T rating made it a rent for me. I used to be excited for this...but the more I see the stronger my Spidey sense is buzzing.

A T rating just means all the 4 letter words will be replaced with a more obscure word that carries the same meaning.

"Oh excrement, did you see that motherfornacating car? It just moved, dude. It just flew in the procreating air and tried to seriously injure me. Where the intercourse is my loving damned wife? This flashlight's a piece of defication!"

See?

These comments just show that most people's concept of a "mature" game is actually quite the opposite.

I don't remember the Silent Hill (1 and 2) charcters dropping F-bombs every 5 minutes and showing a lot of skin (there were sex undetones, but it was rather creepy and tasteful)

On the other hand, while deeply symbolic and creative, I don't consider No More Heroes 2 to be exactly "mature".... it was actually a parody of what most people here considers a mature game.

Go read Lovecraft and then we'll decide if you really nedd foul lenaguage and bucketloads of gore to be creepy and shocking.

Not really, and it shouldn't change anyone else's opinion of it. It hasn't changed mine one bit.

Having had a chance to play the game, I'm coming away with the feeling that it is a mature game, but in a sense that the things that inspired it--Lost, Twin Peaks, Stephen King--are mature themselves, just not necessarily about sex and violence.

Yes, you shoot dudes, but they are disembodied ghostly dudes. Yes, the game can be scary, and not for overtly disturbing thing, but more for things that make you jump. A well timed pile of logs rolling over, an earth mover pushing over the building you are standing in, watching a video of your character writing the novel, but not remembering any of it.

It's weird, but it's more Sixth Sense creepy or The Ring creepy than something that is traditionally horror. Both those movies got by with a PG-13.

I don't care about the ratings. They were meant to be guides for parents to select the appropiate games for their kids, but they have turned into sales obstacles. Developers are no longer concerned by how appropiate their game is for kids, and instead they try to see how much crap they gan get away with and still get a T or an E.

The sad thing is that the only ones concerned and crying foul because the game isn't "mature" and has no sex and cursing in it, are probably the people that should only be playing T and E games... they're not discussing if the game is actually good and engaging.

I'm very surprised. I do love M-rated "immature" games, but I wouldn't mind more games coming out that focus on providing a thoughtful and legitimately "mature" story. Hopefully this will be a game with mainstream appeal to help move the medium into the same respect as movies. I feel like the ultra-violence in every game is holding the medium back.

I don't mind it. o: If the story is good, I don't really mind the ratings. Plus, I ignore most ratings. They seem really...subjective. I mean, Persona 3. Here, it's rated M, in Japan, it's a B [12+]. You don't need gore and swearing and nudity to create a good story and a creepy atmosphere.

I'm still looking forward to it! :]

Some of these comments frighten me. This surely can not be the video game community as I've known it for the last 6 years.

People it's a rating. Who gives a fuck? It means nothing unless you're a parent or a guardian. It says nothing about the quality or maturity of the title.

C'mon now.
