ESRB apologizes for calling Dead or Alive Paradise creepy photo

This morning, we brought you word that the ESRB had rated Dead or Alive Paradise on the PSP and admonished it for being "creepy voyeurism." Since that story broke, the North American game rating board has pulled its summary of the Tecmo Koei title, and apologized for its inappropriate remarks.

The ESRB is supposed to remain objective in its summaries, but the rather critical tone of the original rating violated that goal. A new, less subjective rating has now been put in place -- informing us that filthy sexual escapades are afoot, but doing so in a less judgmental way.

Here's what the ESRB had to say on the matter:

The rating summary for Dead or Alive Paradise was posted to our website in error, and we have since replaced that version with the corrected one.  We recognize that the initial version improperly contained subjective language and that issue has been addressed.

Our intention with rating summaries is to provide useful, detailed descriptions of game content that are as objective and informative as possible.  However they are ultimately written by people and, in this case, we mistakenly posted a rating summary that included what some could rightfully take to be subjective statements.

We sincerely regret the error and will work to prevent this from happening again in the future.

ESRB ratings are always hilarious, usually because of the completely impartial and dispassionate tone. It was certainly odd to see the ESRB call out a game in this manner, but it's quite classy that the board corrected itself. Good show.

Mistake?

Hell, that was what sold me on the game.

No need to apologize. The ESRB was just doing what they know they should be doing, the PR for every game ever made ever.

There are no future-blouses, flexed gluteuses, topless tentacle nipples or fucking sodomites, and there is no longer any creepy voyeurism. I am not interested in this game any longer.

Not as creepy as that mosquito game where you had to suck blood from girls without them noticing.

Lol what the hell is this? This story is amazing in two ways. A: I now have a new game to check out because this seems one step closer to everyones dream or nightmare. I would see it as terrible, I wouldn't want to walk in on anyone playing this new genre. Communication would come to a cease. And B: I didn't know the ERSB played the games enough to care, let alone care about what they say about them. Do they do things like this to make us remember who they are or why they don't matter? This title should be rated E, I don't see anything harmful or sexual in anyway. It's like a family day at the beach.

Why did the ESRB even write the description in the first place? I mean if they pulled the description and apologized because the news spread, why even put the description on a place where everybody is supposed to look at when making a decision on whether to buy a game for a child or ont?

It may have been subjective, but I've never been more sure of the honesty of a rating description for a piece of media. It's weird to say I genuinely like a ratings board, but damn it if the ESRB isn't hilarious. They disappoint me far less often than the MPAA, at any rate.

I was actually a little surprised when they said that. I think they realize the attention they've been getting and are just playing along. I can't believe they were pressured to apologize for it.

I approve of this move. Even if you hate DoA you have to think of what leaving that review up would mean for the future of the ratings. It's not OK to rate a game with what your opinion on it is, but rather actual FACTS. Saying "creepy voyersium", no matter to whom may apply that as truth, is still an opinion.

Well, what are we gonna do without the "side portions of breats" now? Silly silly ESRB. Still, I agree that rating statements should be objective, but I kinda like when they deviate. It amuses me.

No - they are exactly right. It IS creepy. But it's no more creepy than the dozens of magazines that show half-naked women, and those have existed for decades. So it's creepy but it's not REALLY creepy, or bizarre. It's just business as usual for men, but involving software.

I doubt anyone would buy this game for any other reason other than for.... well, you know. It's a game that serves one purpose - a creepy purpose, but a purpose that obviously has a market otherwise they wouldn't release it.

I fail to see what's so creepy about sexuality. Even the vouyeristic kind. Man, America is sexually repressed. We're (Canada is) not much better.

Maybe I'm repressed.. I love tits and vag as much as the next dude.. but I don't think jerkin' it to video games counts as sexuality.

If it's not creepy, it's fucking sad.

Isn't this game just a conversion of DOA Xtreme Volleyball form 360 in all but name?

If this was a proper DOA fighting game, I'd have no problem with it. It does seem a bit voyeuristic and japan centric though. You'd be better off getting a 12 month subscription to Maxim if you really want to look at babes.

Come on KT. Have you lost the will to make a decent DOA beat em up, now that SSFIV is out? Even porting DOA4 to PSP would be better than this Paradise jibe.

I approved ESRB write up of this game. I hope this doesn't discourage ESRB writers to tone down their excellent spoiled filled rating system (I am serious about this).
