ESA: In-game advertising will increase rapidly photo

The Entertainment Software Association is using a new report by DFC intelligent to declare that in-game advertising will grow at a swift pace in order to reach the 72% of Americans now said to be playing.

DFC says that companies spent over $1 billion on game-centric advertising (including promotional tie-ins and the like) in North America last year, and that investment figures could double by 2014. With motor companies, beverage producers and even the army getting in on in-game product placement, you can look forward to your favorite videogame characters following Nathan Drake into the realm of corporate whorism

DFC analyst Michael Goodman says that companies aren't exploiting games enough, and need to ramp up their efforts to sell shit to gamers: "Video games have reached beyond adolescent males into a mainstream entertainment medium that touches every segment of the population. Despite this, advertisers continue to underutilize video games as an advertising vehicle."

I don't suppose that, if we buy a game full of ads, we'll get some of that $60 MSRP shaved off, will we? Oh, what's that? No? Oh ... okay then.

If the next need for speed has billboards all over it and the game is 40$ instead of 60$ that would be a win. Of course that won't happen though!

Meh, as long as the ads are appropriate to the game and don't increase load times just to make me stare at them longer, I'm fine. An ad on a load screen that already exists, or a billboard that matches the atmosphere of the game doesn't bother me.

I kind of like in-game advertising if it's some kind of a sandbox game..

What I am seeing here is an incredibly viable way for indie developers and small studios to receive funding for non-mainstream projects through advertisement, which in many ways is a blessing for originality and the smaller game market.

The way I see it. If you complain about games being too "Call of Duty" than this is a welcome advancement that could put more variety on your plate.

As long as it's not to obtrusive or detrimental to game play then I don't see the problem.

Advertising Is everywere we loom these you can't even get on a bus/train without some form of advertising.

If this helps developers and publishers continue to provide great gaming experiences then I can take one for team.

As long as it's nothing more than a billboard, or Beefcake McGuns drinking Mtn Dew in a cut scene, and I'm fine. Hell, loading screen ads are borderline, but what ever. Will it stop there? Probably not. Will we get a discount on the prices? Again, probably not. What a fine world we live in.

And on a light hearted note. Talking about 'Realism' in games. Being blasted by advertisements left, right and centre when you walk out the door is about as real as it gets. :D

You know, at this point I would have thought there would have been a shit-ton more in-game ads then there currently are. So far they're doing a good job of fitting them in. I don't think there are too many developers that want to ruin the immersion of their game by pushing ads that don't match their world.

I actually enjoy in-game ads. I can't really explain why but they always make me smile. That is if they're subtle, like in-game billboards or some text and picture during a loading screen.

I just got done with alan wake it had energizer batterys a verizon cellphone and I believe he drives a jeep libery or somthing, and none of it bothered me it seemed to add to the realism. The only thing that did bother me was at the end there is jus a sign with the verizon logo and name.....like wtf product placement is one thing he need a car and flashlight use batterys but that's jus shameless a billboard that would never really exisit, where the can you hear me now guy on there or somthin?

I doubt this will drive the retail cost down (we can hope) but it will just go into some ceos already full wallet.

This is a natural progrssion for the indistry, this will most likely only help the big boys. However this could be an add income for indydevs wich is a good thing and I do not think advertising will be over the top. More like a slow brain wasing from the back round like in TV.

Yeah, I'd like for the price to go down if they're selling ad space in games, but we all know that isn't going to happen.

That said though, I don't totally care if there's ads in games. Like, I don't want the game to be ALL ads but take Alan Wake. People hated the ads and product placement in that game but I thought they fit pretty well. Theres tons of batteries in the game.. Mine as well make them Energizers. Theres cars in the game, mine as well make some of them Lincolns (I think they were Lincolns) and so on. The only ad I think I had an issue with in that game was the Energizer one that was on the TV I think in the lodge towards the end of the game.. I don't think advertising should be part of an achievement, that was overstepping an invisible line for me.

I liked the ads all over Prototype, made it feel more alive, especially in the Timea Square area. The billboards in Burnout:Paradise were also well done. I really wish it helped the game more, like more free dlc(levels are what I'd like to see but amusing skins are ok I guess) or cheaper Msrp. I would totally make a game with multiple ads but keep the price as low as possible and add content on a regular basis. It's not a hard concept.

Why the f*#$ is Thunder back?

@monti, fine if you dont enjoy "kiddie" games but i dont know what makes cod any less childish seeing as its overpopulated with 12 year olds cussing their mouths off as they blow each other up. if anything i think it may be the other way around at times. simply my opinion mind you. agree or disagree, its compleatly up to you.

When an in-game ad removes me from my state of immersion, I avoid the product it advertises. I'm thinking mostly of the Burger King ads seen in Burnout Paradise.

I'm cool with product placement when it makes complete sense and doesn't happen every other minute. Like Elena Fischer from Uncharted looking up info of a relic on a laptop and a panning shot reveals for a split second the laptop has a VIAO logo on it.

In short, I suppose it's alright if it's subtle.

But on a more important note. Love the Recess thumbnails Jim!

If they chose to put adversitements for alchoholic beverages in games, that could prove quite a problem here in Norway. Over here adversitements for tobacco and alchoholic beverages are illegal.

In game advertising is perfect for games like Grand theft auto because they bring a fun little sense of realism to them, and If they knOck the price down I'm cool with that, Now that bs with Deus Ex is kinda sketchy but I'm game with the rest

If the products are integrated into the gameplay in creative ways, like with all the real-life products in MGS, hardly anybody cares. If it's just billboards plastered within the game world or loading screen product placement, then yeah that's just telling the customers that you don't care about what kind of experience you are asking them to pay for. I just compare the amount of love and attention lavished on thousands of free indie games versus the sloppy middle finger of some $60 games...

In movies, you could advertise other movies on the same disc, but in videogames you can advertise stores, food, clothing, anything. The problem I see here is that you can't break the immersion of great fantasy settings, so where do you go to market in videogames? Games like Call of Duty and Battlefield, or just use the videogame characters in a commercial as a spokesperson. Or just paste adverts in loading screens. Have promotions such as the CoD thing where you can eat chips and drink soda to get online experience points.

This is not something I'd like to see in gaming personally, but I'll show them by not buying games that have heavy advertisements in game.

chalk up one more reason that this generation of gaming has seen the biggest explosion of greed, exploitation, and nickel- and diming. sure, there have been some great games, but when you look at the big picture, it has by far been the worst for consumers. I fear for the future of gaming, or , gamers, rather
