Epic's feeling risky with Gears of War 2's story photo

Gears of War's series senior producer Rod Fergusson has recently admitted that Epic wasn't feeling as confident as it could have when writing the story for the original game, something he intends to change for Gears of War 2. Fergusson has stated that his team is now far more bold in working on a story-driven game, and promises a plot with some "risks" this time around.

"In [the first] Gears Of War, it's been a long time since Epic did a story-driven game, and so we weren't as confident as we should have been in telling the Gears 1 story, and there were certain choices that we didn't take, because we just weren't confident that we could pull it off, or that people would believe it, so we backed off of that," explained Fergusson. "And now, with Gears Of War 2, and the success we had with Gears 1, we feel a little bit more confident about that. One of the things that I think people are going to take away... [is that] people are going to walk away from the game, at the end of this experience, and go: 'They took some risks, story-wise, and I'm really surprised in that.'"

If there was one recurring criticism for the original Gears of War, it was that the story was very bland and uninteresting. Personally, I didn't mind it, but I'll be interested to see if Epic can pull off something more engaging. The company isn't exactly known for exposition more sophisticated than "I'm a massive phallus, here's my massive phallic gun, suck my massive phallic phallus," but the studio seems intent on telling a deep story with Gears of War 2

Do you think GoW 2 will impress with tis writing, or will phallic gun-toting be the order of the day as per usual?

I liked the original story. Although it dipped in parts, It carried me to the end without a mishap.

The only criticism I had was on play throughs it had no staying power. And I don't think it's something they have in them. But I'm sure they can do better this time round none the less.

I say bring it. I welcome a good story. Even if it falters, GOW2 is likely to make up for it in solid gameplay.

This sort of behavior is exactly what made me mad about the original GoW story. It wasn't godawful, as far as I'm concerned it was par for the course with shooter games. But for about half a year leading in to it I heard talk from CliffyB about how fucking great and well-written the plot was.

It only pisses people off when you talk up a feature nobody's looking for in your game, and it turns out to not be there. Epic would have done far better here to just say nothing about the story, and let me be pleasantly surprised if they actually manage to pull off a decent yarn.

My hopes, they are not high. From the videos of single player play I've inferred that the drive of the characters is to rescue Dom's wife, now schizophrenic due to the death of their child, who has wondered into abandonned and unsafe areas of the nearby city. I look forward to "Sorry Marcus, but Dom's wife is in another rubble pile!" ending each act.

Seriously though, why do we even need a story? It's not like skipping the cut scenes will truly lessen the experience. I'm here to pulp bug-men with a chainsaw, not have my heartstrings tugged.

The firsts story, or lack of, was brilliant. I didn't much care why all this stuff was happening. Or why in invisible floating robot kept appearing to open doors. Was he ever explained? I'm still not sure what exactly was blown up underground either. But if they get too bogged down in story for the next one it'll take away some of the 'fun' of the original. I reckon.

"Jack" was the most expensive blowtorch ever. It was like a D&D animal companion. Everyone forgets it's along for the ride and then they "remember" it's there when they need to use the special powers. Thank god Jack was never needed when the team split up!

I find it hard to believe that someone can play a single player mode and completely ignore the storyline. For the most part, I liked the original's story, even if it was a little derivative and cliche. I'll still pick this up when it comes out in November.

it better have a compelling storyline. I wasn't too into the Gears 1 storyline at all. I just played the game through one time on the hardest available difficulty.

People who complain are just nit picking. The story was fine in the first one. The core gameplay is what is important. All I need is an explanation of why I'm in the particular setting I'm in. GOW1 provided that fine. I'm just worried about the story getting in the way if they are so concerned about providing a storyline to answer the complainers.

Gears of War 1 had a story? I don't think the bare minimum of exposition to set the scene counts as a 'story'...

Even if the first game's story wasn't anything really spectacular, at least it was extremely well told and executed from a GAME-perspective. If they can keep up the flow from the first game while at the same time tell an engaging story then I'll be in heaven.
Just keep the cutscenes to a minimum, please, use only if absolutely necessary. The golden rule of video game storytelling (alas, MGS4 = FAIL)

Bah, I always thought that the story pulled pretty well from the game's obvious inspiration of the movie Black Hawk Down. That movie told the story of the soldiers on the ground. Gears of War did this as well and I thought it worked just fine. Although I guess it might be ok to learn a little more about the overarching story in GoW2, I just felt it was largely irrelevant in the first.

I'm with Timmeh on this one. Gears1 didn't have a story. It was so messed up and paper thin, when the credits started rolling, I didn't even realize that I had just fought the final boss.

I do not believe this. Epic doesn't do compelling stories. Shame on them for trying to make us believe otherwise. This is vapor-hype.

The original's story was okay at best. It was mostly just a sequence of events, and was in no way character-driven. Baird and Cole were 1-dimensional, while Marcus and Dom basically had no character at all.

Emphasis added. I hope that the writing is more impressive and better proofread than this article was. ZING!

The Gears 1 story actively worked against me finishing the game and eventually it won out. Congratulations, terrible story. Rabidly unpleasant characters whose every interaction, cutscene or not, was painful to listen to. Settings devoid of personality and a world obsessed with ridiculous machismo. Just reminiscing about it makes me feel slightly disgusted. In my opinion, Gears of War has the worst story in video game history.

I thought Gears was quite subtle in parts, and was quite entertaining from a character development standpoint.

I felt that there was definitely a message there - the way the four protagonists were coping with the situation and how they covered their fear.

Sure, it wasn't a magnum opus, but I put it to those that thought the story and characters were horrible that you probably missed the point.

Play it again with an open mind, or look for the Cliffy's Notes (see whut I did thar?!?) if it all escapes you.

This isnt a game to tell an incredible tale. This is a game for me to shoot shit with big guns and make blood appear all over my screen.

Gears had a very basic, run of the mill story. I didnt care. What i cared about was me chopping a big alien dude in half with a chainsaw. Correction - a CHAINSAW FUCKING BAYONET. Attached to my fucking awesome machine gun.

They can try to put a decent story into this one if they want. But if while im shooting a ton of locusts in the face while i use one of their own as a shield i notice that the story is not that great, i really dont think ill care.

I don't expect any sort of crazy storyline, but then, I don't really care either. That's not what the game is about.
