Epic's Capps joins the 'noble' fight against used games, suggests bad idea photo

The games industry continues to complain about second-hand games, and this time Epic Games man Michael Capps has chipped in to reiterate how big an issue this is for people that like money. Capps suggests the industry will take steps to combat this problem, bringing up the dodgy use of DLC as a honeytrap.

"I think DLC will be increasing in scope just because in the US we really need to make strides against the second-hand market," explains Capps. "The secondary market is a huge issue in the United States. Our primary retailer makes the majority of its money off of secondary sales, and so you’re starting to see games taking proactive steps toward that by… if you buy the retail version you get the unlock code."

I’ve talked to some developers who are saying 'If you want to fight the final boss you go online and pay USD 20, but if you bought the retail version you got it for free'. We don’t make any money when someone rents it, and we don’t make any money when someone buys it used - way more than twice as many people played Gears than bought it."

See, now while I believe DLC incentives are actually a good idea if they are true rewards, the idea of deliberately crippling a game and including DLC as a means of completion rather than enhancement is lazy and disgusting. What Capps is suggesting, that a game's final boss will basically be a form of DLC, is ridiculous and, in my opinion, an abuse of what downloadable content could and should be. Not to mention the people whose consoles aren't connected to the Internet. I think Epic's use of downloadable maps in Gears 2 was a good thing. I think the extreme that he is suggesting, however, is disgraceful.

Reward your gamers for being loyal customers. Don't make them download the game's conclusion. Why can't game makers get it into their skulls that customer loyalty should be rewarded rather than simply expected?

Im kind of OK with DRM, but if they start doing that I will definitly stop buying games - it's so ridiculous.

And if I don't have an internet connection, I don't get to play offline games?

WELL FUCKING DONE.

If developers are getting that worried about the used game market they need to just start releasing games as DLC Only. Then you can pretty much guarantee no problems.

@SilverDragon1979

That's what I was thinking but then everyone would need HUGE HDD's for their systems. The Wii would be screwed over big time....

I'm pretty sure it's Michael, Jim, not Micheal. Why can't people spell my fucking name?

And yeah, this is an embarrassingly awful idea. A perfect example of demanding, not commanding, respect.

If this were to become the industry-wide norm, gaming would be dead to me. I would not buy any games under this model. This is a violation of the consumer's rights, just like DRM. If they want to recoup their losses, then they need to adapt in ways that don't screw over their lifeblood, the customers. It's a changing world, and people like Capps are the dinosaurs that we will ultimately bury, unless they learn how to properly adapt.

Well don't take it that literal beewby Jim. I think he was doing something called "exaggeration" If they do this then class action suit will surely follow. Remember that Gamestop/EB Games are evil and yes they tend to exploit their employees and treat them like shit. Specially seasonal employees. If they go out of business Ill be more than happy.

Another thing, retailers dont make $1 - $2 dollar per new game. They make substantially more than that. Do you think thay will even bother to make $100 for one hundred games sold? Thats just straight out of the ass thinking. Developers and studios are the people that make wonderful video games happen not some douchebag retailer.

I can see all points of view here. As i have bought new games and used ones it just depends really on how much you like the game. like i'm going to buy GOW2 brand spanking new because i love the game and if its something i'm merely interested in i will probably pick it up second hand.

Its just life!

wow. i will go out of my way to pirate any game that employs a system as ridiculous as the one described.

i think the games industry being so profitable is really going to some developers heads, and sooner or later that bubble is going to burst because of shit like this. probably sooner the way DRM is going. as more and more people become aware of these issues, the assholes in the industry will have nowhere to hide.

Is the price of the games going to go down? Because if I buy a game used from say gamestop, which is usually what... 5, 10 bux off at the most, then I gotta pay $20 for the end boss? You think Im going to do that? No. Im going to just forgo the whole transaction and pirate the god damn thing. They do realize that most of their clients, i.e. nerds and geeks, also know how to, if not know someone who can DL a copy and play it free of charge?

This is a road down the wrong path for both them and us. And sooner or later the consumer is going to get tired of the crap.

If they ever do something stupid and greedy like the whole "play to beat the game" thing, I'm sure there will be a massive boycott of the game and another amazon 1* thing.
