At one point in its development, Epic Mickey was being created for the three big platforms of this generation: the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. A conversation with the Disney Interactive boss about porting the title to the Wii was all it took for the videogame to become an exclusive.
Talk about wild. Designer Warren Spector told the story in a recent interview with Official Nintendo Magazine (via 1UP), detailing a conversation with Graham Hopper on the day the exclusivity was decided by a simple question.
"It's burned in my brain,” Spector said in the interview, “Graham Hopper [Disney Interactive boss] pulled me into my office one day and said 'What does it take to deliver on the goals we have for this product?’ "
"And I said, well, you need enough time and enough money to be competitive. And it'd be awfully nice if we could focus on one platform."
As told by Spector, Graham then asked what he thought about Epic Mickey becoming a Wii exclusive. As you can imagine, Spector like the idea: “… And I went, ‘Holy cow -- yeah.’ ”
This makes you wonder what the game may have been before the platform switch in 2008. Would it have a chainsaws, cover systems, or radial menus? We guess there’s no point in doing this to ourselves -- this game is locked-in as a Wii exclusive for now.

"This image is horribly misleading and way cooler then the actual screenshots"
Why would this create a firestorm.
Because people are stupid. Put a keyboard in front of someone and it's like shooting their brains out.
That early concept art starts to make more sense now. $10 says they created it before it became a Wii exclusive.
No matter what Epic Mickey is or isn't, now it's going to invite comparisons to a vastly superior imaginary game that people feel cheated out of.
I'm just hoping it captures the fun and nostalgia of Mickey Mania.
Keep up the good work Chet.
How about just HD resolution?
Because the concept art looked pretty and got everybody all hot and bothered.
It's like when a hot girl takes off her bra and you realize her boobs are smaller than you thought they were. She's still hot but plenty of guys would cry foul.
Personally I'm more into faces anyway. What? I can be just as sexualized as the next testerone driven douche.
Yeah, we all know that the Wii sold well. That doesn't change the fact that probably over 50% of those Wii's sol are collecting dust in the corner somewhere and then another 25% are only used to play a few rounds of bowling or tennis and a few other average games. Then MAYBE the last 25% are actually owned by gamers who really just enjoy playing games and play the few worthwhile games that are on the Wii.
What it comes down to is that while the PS3 and 360 represent a smaller population of the market, they also probably represent a larger than 50% of the sales of games on the game market.
And yes, I know I'm making these statistics up as I go. They're estimates on what I view the average Wii owner is and I'm probably not that far off...
Will this doom this game? Erm...no... A terrible game is a terrible game no matter the platform and so while it probably SHOULD have been PS3 and 360 bound it by no means would have spelled success just by doing so. So if Epic Mickey is good it'll sell alright...but I have my doubts...
It's a Wii game. Deal with it. Comments like:
"thx for not putting it on a system with actual visual capabilities"
Are just so full of shit it's embarassing.
Some of these comments are absolutely fucking pathetic. I'm going to assume very few people actually read the article in Game Informer about the game. Given that the main mechanic is, like Okami, a paintbrush, I would rather play it on the Wii than on the 360 or PS3.
This whole graphical debate is just straight up stupid. I use Okami again. Okami could have looked better if it was on the PS3, but it didn't need to. I can't say that Epic Mickey's art style will transcend technical incompetence on the part of the system or the developer, but if done properly it will look fantastic on the Wii.
Stop your fucking whining and wait until the game comes out. Seriously, some of these comments should be in tomorrow's "Fanboy Friday."
I hate to sound like a broken record, but the concept art would've looked A LOT better if it was realized on a better console. No offense to the Wii, but it's capabilities graphics-wise do not do the concept art justice, like an HD console would've. Again, no Wii hatred, just stating facts. I was kinda dissapointed when I saw the GI screenshots.
Not entirely, When I saw the very first concept art. I was pleased to see Disney in a darker and twisted light. It looked like Walt Disney was merged with HP Lovecraft and a how to steampunk manual in a horrible teleporter accident. I also really loved the nightmare before Christmas and the whole feel and style of it. Tim Burton's movie is one of my better childhood memories and I would still enjoy it as an adult. I feel you would need better graphics to convey the twisted vision once portrayed in the early concept art. The graphics I saw on the screenshot, except for some of the character models being a little too detailed or smooth. Look like they came from the Nintendo 64. Not one but too full generations back. To me that just speaks of lazy development. Look at legend of zelda twilight princess for the gamecube. even that looked better, and that's 1 generation back console wise.
but, sadly I really feel that the graphics, no matter how good are meaningless now. The style itself, has been lost. What we once had was a twisted and nightmarish re-imagining of our childhood, which was really cool. what we now have is a ironically disneyfied version riding on the hype initially generated.
Unless the project has a major turn of direction, this will be my biggest disappointment of 2009.
STEP 2: Such a game gets released for the Wii
STEP 3: Everyone bitches that the other systems didn't get that game
STEP 4: Everyone derrides the game irrespective of how good it may be
Rinse, lather, repeat.
While I agree that it makes sense for it to be Wii exclusive because of the whole paintbrush thing, I'm still majorly disappointed that it looks like I won't get to pop this in my PS3 or 360. I own a Wii that hasn't been touched for over a year, sure, but the fact that it WAS being developed for other consoles is like a kick in the shin.
I'm sure everyone is interested in Epic Mickey, but that doesn't mean every irrelivent detail needs it's own page. This is at least the forth article dealing specifically with the wii exclusivity of epic mickey. (Once during the announcement, twice during the game informer confusion, and now this is the forth article minimum, assuming the exclusivity issue wasn't also mentioned in the developer interview and all the other articles.
This is what the game looks like:
Not this:
Or this:
Don't get me wrong, it may well be a good game, but those artistic concept images that got everyone excited kind of makes it a let down is all.
@ GEMPadre036
No. That's not the point of Mickey. Mickey has always been a mascot of the most family friendly company on earth. There is no "respect" for him to earn back. Mickey is what he is, and if you have grown out of Mickey, so be it. It's his job to be there when you are a kid and when you are a parent, but by his nature he is simply not a hardcore character that was designed for gamers to respect, and for him to earn that kind of respect would destroy the essence of the character.
BULL. F*CKING. SHIT
Am i saying that Wii graphics can be like the X360 or PS3? no, but if all we see are shitty games it's not because of the Wii itself but due to shitty development, SMG and SSBB more than proved that. Besides that point does anyone remember the beautiful looking TURDS that were games like Velvet Assassin and Condemned? will you take those over let's say, Plants Vs Zombies? yeah i thought so.
To those whining about the release of the news that the game was initially reaching other platforms, yes, it was uncool, but besides that sit and think for a moment, does anyone truly believe that the so called hardcore Halo/Uncharted/MGS/insert-franchise-here players that abound in the X360 and PS3 demographics would have bought this game? POSTERS, PLEASE!, they woulnt have , why? because "Mickey Mouse is in it, that's for kids", if anything Okami has more than proved that point. That said, IMHO the whole Wii exclusive was actually a good idea, like it or not, so quit your whining or buy a Wii.
