Gears of War executive producer Rod Fergusson has told CVG that while Epic doesn't have a strict target persé, they are expecting about a million Gears of War 3 beta players. He said they don't really care to beat a specific target or to reach a record number of players, but that the focus is on getting as many players as possible to yield the data to help create a better game.
Data gained from a beta can be highly valuable for a company that is willing to invest in the costly process, as studios pay more and more attention to both bugs found in a beta and potential player experience issues that may arise. The more people play it, the better Epic can tell which weapons need tweaking, which maps might need some slight redesigns, and things like that.
The Gears of War 3 beta can be accessed by Bulletstorm: Epic Edition owners on April 18th, and by people who pre-ordered Gears of War 3 on April 25th. As Bulletstorm only sold 279,000 copies in the first couple of weeks, that will require quite a lot of pre-orders to make a million.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
oh Gears eh? I'll give it a rent.
Trolling much?
There's a download link on the main page of the bulletstorm game. It's gray at the moment but on the 18tg the link will become active.
Also. I have a standard beta code extra if anyone is interested?
Stop trolling, you're not fooling anybody.
Gears 3 could go down as my all-time favorite Multiplayer experience with dedicated servers. Good to see Epic has learned from their past mistakes and are willing to foot the bill for servers. Activision will continue to get away with it since its user base does not even know what lag and host advantage is.
Gears of War 2 multiplayer is a mistake that is still happening.
I want to be in the beta but I cant afford GOLD LIVE right now.
"There is a cap." Yeah, the cap is just numbering in the millions. Gotta love the marketing machine.

I'm hoping the servers suffer a near melt down. I would rather that happen now and Epic be prepared rather than it happening upon release and the game being unplayable (a la gears 2)
HAHAHAHA again that Epic's dishonest, manipulative attempt at filling their beta doesn't appear to have worked.
Frag off, Epic! I'll be spending my time playing Portal 2 because I'd rather support Valve than you!
"Hahaha those reported sales figures for Bulletstorm were so deserved, especially after that vanilla demo. Bulletstorm was the biggest Day 1 disappointment for me that I can remember, but at least I got most of it back after selling it."
So... you bought the game even though you thought the demo sucked?
That was dumb.
I'm not going to argue with you, sir. It was very dumb! But I didn't buy it based on the demo, I bought it based on the what I read about it from sites such as this.
When I played the demo, I already knew there was more to the game then what they showed off. That was why I (along with many others) thought the demo sucked balls. I just felt that, as far as showing gamers what Bulletstorm has to offer, the demo BARELY did that.
After playing through Bulletstorm twice, leveling to 61 in Anarchy and playing all Echo maps, this is the first game in YEARS that I have chosen not to keep. Maybe it was the ridiculous characters that I could never get into, the racist remarks about my culture I had to listen to during 1 chapter, certain restrictions in Anarchy mode or the disappointing ending. Seriously, who played through Bulletstorm and thought "Yup, I had no problem with how that ended that at all"?
