Sony may have put a few industry noses out of joint by refusing to lower the PlayStation 3 price, but the platform holder has won itself at least one unlikely ally -- Epic's Mark Rein, who believes that dropping the price would have been the wrong decision for Sony to make this year.
"The truth is Sony has had a difficult year and I think they had to do what they had to do to try to be profitable," he explains. "They have their own financial issues to solve and lowering the price of the console would probably have made their situation worse. They will get around to it in their own good time. If you're willing to look at this as a long-term play, they're going to be just fine."
Mark Rein also pointed out an interesting fact about the current generation, pointing to a reason why we're nowhere near ready for a new bunch of consoles:
"Over half the users who played Gears of War 2 so far do not have HDTVs," he said. "Of the systems that are out there now, the majority of them aren't plugged into HDTVs. So there's no way we're ready for the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox Whatever."
I've always said that Standard Definition is still called standard for a reason. It still boggles the mind how some developers (coughCapcomcough) keep putting tiny text in their videogames, despite the fact that half the gaming public can't read it.

As far as the price drop goes, there was already a huge one -- The console started out at $600, remember? Now, that was probably too high to begin with, but people seem to forget that the price was ever lowered at all.
Also I still do not have an HDTV. But I recently found out that my PC monitor can hook up with my PS3 so I am no longer in hurry to break the bank.
oh, and can we stop referring to these consoles as next gen yet?

This certainly says a lot for the slow(ish) uptake of Blu-ray - who needs blu-ray when you've still got a SD TV?!?! The people i know with HDTV's all have either PS3's or Blu-ray players.
I'd put money on the fact that PS3's are more often played on HD TV's than 360's. If you can afford a PS3, surely you can afford a HD TV!! However if mummy buys you a 360 with her welfare cheque, chances are she's not got a HD TV, specially not in your council house bedroom.
I'd be interested to see percentages for each console of HD and SD.
the only way i've found to demonstrate the hd to friends is to watch a bluray without saying it is and when the movie end i'll show them a dvd and when they say "what's wrong with the color and the blur men ? is the tv broken?" they understand
To anyone who doesn't want to/can't shell out a fuckwad of money on an HDTV, well if you're purely interested in gaming enhancement, then look at reasonably priced monitors. They're full HD, yet a fraction of the price.
This article says that most consoles are still plugged into SD TV's - and I say that in my opinion that's because such a huge number of consoles are 360's in kids bedrooms.

Your SD vs HD assumptions don't make any sense. And I think you're offensive as well. Talking about mummies boys and welfare checks. You might have gotten a good deal with your TV but that doesn't say anything. 1800 bucks? 800 bucks? You don't even mention the price. Nevertheless, it's still a lot of money. Being able to afford a PS3 doesn't automatically mean you've got an EXTRA sum of money to get an HD TV. You can not look in my wallet and don't know shit about the situation some people are in. Therefor you need to shut your trap and quite being a fucking douchebag. I love my PS3 and I play on an SD TV. So what? What does that matter to you? All that matters is that I'm enjoying my games.
Dude chill out, I'm just trying to rile people, get a bit of a rise out of yall. If you must know, my TV was £1000 - reduced to £800 in a sale, and I got a further 20% off with an offer. Got it on 12month interest free credit and have just recently finished paying it off at about £55 a month.

Fair do's that you're playing your PS3 on an SD TV - so was i till i got my LCD. I'm not saying EVERYONE with a PS3 plays on HD, or even that everyone should! I'm saying i bet there is a far bigger percentage of PS3 users on HD than 360 users....
My comments on welfare parents is something i hold close personally, i know 4 or 5 people, friends of friends, family of friends, who have not worked a single day in the last 10 years, coming to the rest of us, hands out, all "I need to feed my kids" who have bought at least 2 360's EACH in the last year or two, for their kids, or themselves.
So yeah, it's a fucking bugbear of mine, that while i pay nearly a third of my relatively low income in tax - which mostly goes to these people to "feed their kids" that they go and spend it on 360's, sky TV, alcohol and ciggies. it also pisses me off that this obviously reflects on the sales figures and gives people on sites like this an excuse to say "rah rah 360 outsells PS3 by so many rah rah rah"

That is the difference between Microsoft and Sony, Microsoft thinks about 5/6 months ahead as 'short term stategy' and at most 5 years ahead in their 'long term strategy' while Sony is a Japanese company, and as I've seen while working at the Toyota Europe HQ, Japanese people consider the next 5 years the 'short term strategy' and only start talking 'long term strategy' when they're talking about the next 20 years or so...
trust me they've got roadmaps and calendars for the next 50 years or so ( or at least Top Management will have them )...
Lowering the price on the PS3 would be a 'quick win', it'll work for a month or maybe 2 at most and then the 'lowered price' is the 'normal' price...
look at the 360, it has had a few serious pricecuts already, but it never keeps the momentum of those 'pricecutmonths'... So its not benificial for Sony to do it at this early stage in the PS3's live, my guess is for 2010 but the pricedrop will also mean the release of a new SKU that keeps the 'old' price, possibly once again with PS2-backward compatibility...
