When I heard that Epic had an idea for a "big change" to Gears of War 2's multiplayer, I was hoping for confirmation that it would be worth me putting the disc in again. After the "update" to Gears 2, I've been barely able to play multiplayer thanks to awful matchmaking and the trolls that exploit it. Still, Epic's non-fix idea is still somewhat dramatic, if only on a cosmetic level.
The suggested alteration revolves around showing your trueskill rank. According to Epic's Rod Fergusson, showing one's trueskill ranking is a source of frustration for some, and could do with changing. When I think Gears 2 multiplayer, I can think of several far more frustrating things, but whatever.
"What if, instead of skill rank, we instead showed your experience level. You would gain experience through your individual performance in Public multiplayer matches - the higher your score at the end, the more experience you acquire," Fergusson proposes. "Of course the experience gained across the different match types would be balanced so you couldn’t just grind on the respawning game types to try and level faster. The experience requirements for each level would grow with each level gained (like a typical RPG) and we’d have 99 levels of experience for you to show off your leetness."
This "experience system" would have no real bearing on the game, and would exist simply as a surrogate penis, showing off to others how long you've played the game. You'd keep gaining "experience" for as long as you play the game, and would lose some for quitting matches. Outside of that, there's no actual alteration.
That's not going to encourage me to sit through twenty minutes of matchmaking.
Ranking is broken atm, I play with someone who has played twice as many games as I have and is ranked below me.
"Perfect" should never be used to describe a game until its #1 on UU's playing it on XBL. If a game was "perfect" there'd be no flaws, at all. So lets watch our choice of words.
Gears 2 is far from being perfect. Epic wants your money, not your loyalty fanhood. Like Jim said, waiting twenty minutes to play for 5 minutes is NOT a good investment of one's time. Wether trolls continuously exploit or not sir.
The same goes for the word "fun". Everyone has their own definition of fun. If the word "fun" to YOU defines playing a half-assed game where you spend time finding matches VS playing them, then Gears 2 is up your alley.
In MY opinion, Gears 2 was a bad investment of money let alone time spent playing. I'd rather play Halo 3's overly balanced game than waste time dealing with Gears 2 player's antics.
Gameplay > Graphics.
Anyone who says otherwise is beyond ignorant, a lost cause.
Most of the lag is due to Microsoft and their scam of a service known as Live. Where you host the game yet they still manage to charge you $50 a year. Funny how that works.
Also I don't own Gears 2 but I believe Jim when he says the matchmaking takes 20 minutes to find a damn game. The first Gears of War did the same thing.
But thank goodness it's just about the rank system, which I couldn't care less about. I play Gears because it's fun, not because I'm worried about a symbol or number next to my name.
That's what kept me playing Gears 1 for 18 months. Now I'd rather play Left 4 Dead.
I'm still waiting for UT3 to be enjoyable...
=(
I'm glad that they have stepped up and decided to address what's otherwise a game I enjoyed.
Apologies, reading sarcasm isn't always easy for me VS actualy hearing it. Try using a witty "/sarcasm" at the end of your comments, that'll get 'em.
I'm just used to Gears2 fans/fanboys saying incredibly ignorant remarks like the one you made, except without sarcasm.
Yes. Gears 2 could have been released as DLC. You know, putting in new weapons, enemies, several hours worth of single and co-op levels, a dozen maps or so, cutscenes and characters would be just fine. Just release it as one big-assed download. Why not? Hey, whaddya think they'd charge for all of that, considering that the price of a 3-hour mission or several maps is about $10? Hmmm...I guess it would cost about $60. Which means that it wouldn't have been better off as DLC, and that you're a moron.
