Epic considering always-on DRM for Fortnite
Fortnite, Epic Games' Unreal 4 zombie game, is looking pretty cool and seems designed to take full advantage of what PC gaming has to offer. Unfortunately, it may take advantage of some not-so-welcome PC features, such as the ability to impose always-online DRM requirements.
Producer Tanya Jessen wouldn't confirm the requirement as a definite, but did state that, should Epic go down that road, it would primarily act as an improvement to the game. The potential measure was justified by the fact that Fortnite is built predominantly for multiplayer.
"Fortnite is a game that’s being developed as a co-op experience primarily," she told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. "That’s our number one focus. This is a game you’re gonna want to play with your friends, and it’s most fun with your friends. So whatever we decide to do there is gonna be more relevant to the most fun experience you can have with your friends [than it is to piracy]. But I can’t nail that down today."
Fortnite still has a single-player, however, one that Jessen says is "super fun." If that mode has to be played online, expect a backlash -- one that I won't have much sympathy for Epic over. Setup email comments
