Ensemble Studios was working on Halo MMO? photo

Recently closed Ensemble Studios was working on a Halo MMO, according to Gamasutra. Prototype UI and level screenshots have been uncovered from the project which lends much credence to rumors that circulated a while ago of Ensemble and Bungie working together on such a project.

The gossip was flying around as early as 2006 when talk of a Halo MMO first surfaced. No official announcement has ever been made, but this new evidence seems to suggest that the game was in development throughout 2006 and 2007 before being quietly canceled last year.

Of course, just because Ensemble isn't working on it anymore, that doesn't mean a Halo MMO is not being made. It's quite clear that Microsoft wants to ride the Halo horse until its legs fall off, and MMOs seem to be the pinnacle of license flogging these days. I'll be surprised if a Halo MMO doen't happen in the future.

An hour late to the party but you're still probably going to steal all the views from my page on the same topic. Damn you and your well established popularity...

Like I said in IRC, a Halo MMO will be awful as everyone will just put all their skill points in the "Arsebag" skill tree.

You learned "Random Racial Slur"!

If they'd wanted to keep it authentic, they'd have played out a tea bagging animation every time you looted a dead enemy...

Halo MMO Classes:
1. Frat Fuck.
2. Profanity-spewing 12-Year-Old.
3. Homophobic Redneck.
4. Black Dude who says "n___a" constantly
5. White 12-Year-Old Wannabe Rapper from Suburban Connecticut.

People hating on Halo, big surprise. You could do far, far worse than Halo, friends.

I actually really like Halo, I just hate some of the people who play it.

Also, lighten up :D

eeehhhhh. I think it was/is a dumb idea. If you're not a Spartan, it wouldn't be any fun and it wouldn't make sense to have that many Spartans running around. The universe just doesn't lend itself to a MMO.

@Char: True, you could do a lot worse. But you'd be hard pressed to find another game as utterly mediocore that manages to sell millions of copies.

Haha too bad halo isn't mediocre. The single player is completly mediorcre...i agree with that. But you can't say that the multiplayer hasn't revolutionized console multiplayer. Think of one game that has had a bigger impact.
Halo 2 and 3 still has the best matchmaking in history.

I think a Halo MMO would have been a great idea for people who want a WoW experience w/out all medival & elvish junk. The primary reason I for one done play WoW is because I'm much more of a science fiction fan over a medival fan... so from what I've seen a Halo MMO would be a sci-fi WoW, which is exactly what I want.

They coulda pulled another Star Wars: Galaxies. First nobody is a Spartan, then everyone is a Spartan.

@Phantom Spaceman

Super Smash Bros. Brawl, any Mortal Kombat after II, Assassin's Creed, Madden, Pokemon Ranger, High School Musical: Makin' the Cut (DS), Dirge of Cerberus, Red Steel, Carnival Games, Sonic and the Secret Rings. Phew.

I don't own stock in Bungie or anything, but I just think Halo gets an undeserved bad rap. I was, quite frankly, blown away by the multiplayer experience and the sheer amount of shit you could do outside of the main game (four-player co-op campaign, watching replays, forge, taking screenshots, excellent matchmaking unlike CoD4).

It's not the game's fault that assholes play it. If time-traveling nazis played Braid and Castle Crashers would everyone hate that, too?

There are WAY better games to turn into an MMO if your only concern is one that isn't "medieval elvish junk".

Halo MMO = World of Douchebags.

I think a Halo MMO could be done well. Just that this is an example of exactly how NOT to do it. Something along the lines of what Huxley was shooting for (pun intended) might work. That's if Huxley ever gets a release so we know what exactly it is that an MMOFPS does well. Perhaps use Planetside for inspiration? Huge online FPS battles with one side playing covenant and the other USNC? Add in the squad rivalry of Resistance 2 and I'm sold.

If you say Half-Life I'm going to stab you.

On with the post - no. No Halo MMO, please.

If only a Halo MMO would attract new people, as opposed to bringing in all the same 15-year-old idiots and frat boys. But you know that it'll mostly just drag them over. And then they'll probably end up bleeding over into WoW, and we'll have a whole new mix of douchebag stew over there.

I would love a Halo MMO. Not sure how well it would work but I'm for it. Or like I've been saying for a while now, Halo in the style of Warhawk.

The Dig
Killzone
Run Like Hell
STTNG: A Final Unity
Pariah
Marathon
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
Haegemonia: Legions of Iron
Deus Ex

Halo's storyline is fairly excellent, and amazing though...

Damnit I love you! Just for putting The Dig first in your list. Deus Ex is definitely fantastic science fiction. Shadowrun on the SNES is another great one. System Shock. I would put Mass Effect but really, it's a collection of so many other science fiction pieces for the fun of it.

Halo had a decent storyline, if stolen, but the characters were so bland. Master Chief? Elites? Covenant? Not very imaginative with the naming there were they.

Anyone else ever notice Sylvester Stalone is called John Spartan in Demolition Man?
