Recently closed Ensemble Studios was working on a Halo MMO, according to Gamasutra. Prototype UI and level screenshots have been uncovered from the project which lends much credence to rumors that circulated a while ago of Ensemble and Bungie working together on such a project.
The gossip was flying around as early as 2006 when talk of a Halo MMO first surfaced. No official announcement has ever been made, but this new evidence seems to suggest that the game was in development throughout 2006 and 2007 before being quietly canceled last year.
Of course, just because Ensemble isn't working on it anymore, that doesn't mean a Halo MMO is not being made. It's quite clear that Microsoft wants to ride the Halo horse until its legs fall off, and MMOs seem to be the pinnacle of license flogging these days. I'll be surprised if a Halo MMO doen't happen in the future.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

I actually really like Halo, I just hate some of the people who play it.
Also, lighten up :D
Halo 2 and 3 still has the best matchmaking in history.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl, any Mortal Kombat after II, Assassin's Creed, Madden, Pokemon Ranger, High School Musical: Makin' the Cut (DS), Dirge of Cerberus, Red Steel, Carnival Games, Sonic and the Secret Rings. Phew.
I don't own stock in Bungie or anything, but I just think Halo gets an undeserved bad rap. I was, quite frankly, blown away by the multiplayer experience and the sheer amount of shit you could do outside of the main game (four-player co-op campaign, watching replays, forge, taking screenshots, excellent matchmaking unlike CoD4).
It's not the game's fault that assholes play it. If time-traveling nazis played Braid and Castle Crashers would everyone hate that, too?
There are WAY better games to turn into an MMO if your only concern is one that isn't "medieval elvish junk".
Halo MMO = World of Douchebags.
Can you show me a game with astounding science fiction?
If you say Half-Life I'm going to stab you.
On with the post - no. No Halo MMO, please.
StarCraft?

Halo's storyline is fairly excellent, and amazing though...
Halo had a decent storyline, if stolen, but the characters were so bland. Master Chief? Elites? Covenant? Not very imaginative with the naming there were they.
Anyone else ever notice Sylvester Stalone is called John Spartan in Demolition Man?
The three seashells.
One is for scraping and the other two are buttons; One is jetwash and the other is blowdry.
I totally forgot system shock....and system shock 2...fantastic "old school" gaming...the descent series was also quite excellent..
everyone forgets about the dig.....it was such a great game. too bad more people don't know it existed.
