Over the last few months, I had been receiving tips on an upcoming fan-made Max Payne short entitled "Valhalla," but I avoided posting the trailer, instead waiting until the full production was complete. The film was finally uploaded last week, so here it is!
Max Payne: Valhalla comes courtesy of the Spain-basedZapruder Pictures studio. It is a follow-up to a previous Max Payne film produced for an English language project at the Francisco de Vitoria University. The acting may be spotty, and certain liberties were taken with the original story. Still, I think you'll find it enjoyable. Especially this bit.
Max Payne's voice and the way he delivered his cynical lines was one of the highlights of the game for me. You can hear this guy tried to sound like him, but in my opinion sounds totally unconvincing.
However it doesn't look bad, not bad at all actually. Which makes the above all the more disappointing.
1. The guy sounds nothing like the original Max Payne and he practically butchers his lines compared to the original.
2. They seriously skewed the plot by putting on the ending dialog piece at the end of one of the first missions in the game.
3. The short itself is unsure of whether or not it wants to be funny (the game loading scene) or serious (all the rest, really).
Some of the effects and cam work is good, though, so that's a shame. This would have been much better if they weren't trying to make a Max Payne short. Then it would have stood on its own story and no one would make comparisons. As it is, though, it is too dissimilar and immersion-breaking (my God, that voice!) to hold up as well.
I normally love all indie/fan-made shorts but this just rubs my Max Payne-loving mind the wrong way.
