England hates BioShock, loves FIFA 08: 2007's UK sales chart is blasphemy photo

The UK overall sales chart of 2007 has been released, and it shows a few interesting notes, a few obvious points and at least one absolute instance of complete and utter fail. Topping the chart was, predictably, FIFA 08, since most British males are beer guzzling, skinheaded racists who follow the boring sport of football like it was some kind of religion. It's for this reason that PES 2008 is also in the top ten, because one game about football just isn't enough, damn it!

The full list is as follows:

1: FIFA 08 (1,391,435)
2: Dr Kawashima's Brain Training (1,016,558)
3: Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (935,044)
4: PES 2008 (787,382)
5: More Brain Training From Dr Kawashima (760,225)
6: Halo 3 (735,176)
7: The Simpsons Game (734,595)
8: Wii Play (688,002)
9: Assassin's Creed (670,286)
10: WWE Smackdown VS Raw 2008 (563,121)

The complete lack of BioShock is disappointing to say the least, insulting to say the worst. The very idea that TWO Brain Training games can get in and yet one of the most artistic undertakings of the last year can't is saddening. Wait ... not it's not, that's to be expected, actually, and it's naive to think otherwise. Foolish heathens. I hope my fellow countrymen enjoy their football and brain training ... which is a very ironic  contrast indeed.

The final interesting point is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare hitting the number three spot way above Halo 3 at number six. I personally thought CoD4 wiped the floor with Halo 3, especially in multiplayer, so that's pretty encouraging. It may also be to do with the fact that it was released on the PS3 as well, and let's face it, what else is a PS3 owner going to buy? Most of the Brits probably bought it so they could shoot people from other countries. That is, after all, the typical football fan's dream.

Not even a sign of The Orange Box though ... for shame.

@vp360: true, in other sports, they score more, but then are ridiculously high scores all that necessary. Furthermore, the ruckus people make over each point gets annoying. For instance, I was wathcing a basketball game with some friends (I do like basketball btw), and everytime a player dunked or made a 3-shot or something like that, they were like "HOLY SHIT" or some other explicative. I don't see the point of getting all excited over every SINLGE point made, especially since there are so many.

Then, you have soccer. Granted they score less, but watching Ronaldinho break away from the middle, spin past the last 2 defenders, and kick it past the goalie in the perfect corner angle is nothing short of sheer amazement. And the simple fact that you don't see it every 10 seconds makes it even more worthwhile.

Likewise, people in the US are obsessed with Madden games. Every year they also regurgitate the same spiel with "better graphics" and people gobble it up.

You also have to give credit where its due. Soccer is the most watched sport on a worldwide level. Like in 1967 for instance, when 2 factions in the Nigerian civil war declared a cease-fire, jsut so Pele could go to their country and play a game. I'd like to see A-Rod or any other overpaid American player of any sport accomplish a similar feat.

FIFA 08 stinks, Half Life aint in there because it stinks. If they released Portal on its own (which i hear you can get...) then i would have bought 1mil copies to make a expensive point..

COD4 is full of chavs so yeah, the chart shows it.

Wow, something I can finally agree with this guy about. 110%. It's crazy, like he read my mind.

I can understand FIFA as #1, I'm always shocked at Madden sales here in America. What I can't understand is the presence of Wii Play, the Simpsons, and all the brain training over like Halo 3, The Orange Box, or Bioshock.

Wow.

I tried to get into football....and I can get behind football in country vs country but the premiership is a load of wank. A bunch of wussified pre-madonnas getting paid far too much for doing far too little. And I know they train and all that malarky but really compared to the doctors, and nurses, and fireman, and police officers, and fucking sewage workers and pretty much everyone else who actually do things of worth who get paid far far less it is ridiculous.

The UK is caught in this system of inflating these 'heroes of football' upto pedestals when they really need to be taken down a few pegs. This includes these neverending cycle of the same games repackaged every year with 'dem shiny new grafiks aww wikid' and 'omg dis won has wayne rooney on the cova'. The fact people buy into this whole world of football as religion, and the fact it can outsell truly good games is quite saddening being a uk resident :-/

Damn, and here was me thinking it was because all of the games shops seem to sell rubbish these days (there appears to be like, 3 pre owned pc games in ipswich, felixstowe and a few smaller towns around where i live) and the rest is console games, quite a few on the list can be bought for a console and the next gen games cost alot so people may have bought games they've seen before rather than risk 60 pounds (around 120 dollars) for a new game they dont know that much about (bioshock).
then again, the ratio of idiots here is rising so that may not help games where to progress and UNDERSTAND the storyline you need to think about it a bit.

but i could be wrong

Its so sad to see people so goddamn ignorant. Those "ferries" run up and down a field for 90 minutes doing such incredible things with their feet and i would seriously give my playstation away if any one of you could go out there and just run the field for the HOUR AND A HALF.
Literally, wars have been stopped so futbol could be played. Do you even understand the magnitude of that. Kids who will be starving tonight are playing their hearts out on a field, street, or back alley Please dont be such brainwashed amaricans and at least act like you understand a thing or two.
Not only are their physical abilities far superior to those of stateside athletes but those players are all larger than life. Some day a fathers will be telling their sons the amazing feats of the likes of Ronaldhino, T. Henry, Van Nistelrooy. This is way bigger than your stupid homophobic need to call things gay.

I don't know what the big deal is. If Brits don't like the game big deal. A lot of people around these boards don't seem to think the games its all it seems to be as well.

And also, Italians better than the English at football. Its kind of a fact too since the Italy finished top of their pool while England didn't even qualify for Eurocup.

Anyway, I can understand everyone's gripe that Bioshock and The Orange Box aren't on the list.

And for everyone that's bitching about how Soccer (Football, or Futbol) is gay, I bet that you didn't know that American Football was derived from Australian Rugby!?

Much appreaciated Knives.

I never watch these charts half the time anyway, as they only tell you so much of anything.

As for football (soccer), I think its less of a religion and more of a cultural thing, just like a boxing match or the Olympics, we all rally for our side or country to do well and bring home the bacon. Go to any euro/african/middle east/asia/sth american etc nation and football is just as important to people there, if not more so.

I ask the naysayers that don't get football, if not football, what would you rather have mainly male people, to rally around to enjoy? If it wasn't football, fans woould easily find something else competitive to massage those ancient tribal urges. Don't forget, many sports have grown from ancient times. Times when sports were played to entertain the masses. Hating or disliking something because its popular and because you don't understand it are close but still two different things.

So while the likes of the muses of drama (soaps, dance, theatre etc today) entertain the female crowd, sports will always be the more male pursuit. I'm sure if you hunt you'll find books on this kind of thing, if you can bother. Just being ignorant and saying something is rubbish because you don't play or understand it is just lame. I can appreciate American Football and understand it, because I have an open mind to it.

And if you can force your mind open a little, there's the likes of Wikipedia and You Tube etc, that will teach you anything about football you want to know or care to understand.

On top of that, if you don't dig football that's fine, but you can't escape it. Yes, its that popular. Even if you leave the country, its a universal language.

I was told a story by a friend. He went abroad and crossed a border without papers and got arrested. guess what got him out of that arrest. His U.K team football shirt was recognised by a police officer (also a football fan), confirming his foreign status as much as his passport. Now you understand the universal language part that breaks down barriers. Just enjoy the game, behave yourselve and stay out of trouble. Italian Roma fans (plus others) unfortunately fans have yet to learn this.

Back on topic, I have and love Bioshock but its already been at number one. Doesn't matter it did not make it in this chart. We know the real score and how good it is.

That's right dumb yanks calling everything in sight they don't get gay (clearly can't think of anything constuctive
to say beyond 'gay', even in a negative tone). Please don't be too ignorant, that kind of thought causes conflict when expanded upon. It can start with football (sure we'll listen to you, but don't talk bs too much) and end elsewhere, because lack of understanding is the new in thing with some of you guys.

Hate to say it, but now you know why such 'head up your arse' ignorance got the U.S stung over the last few years (no offence meant). Lack of stopping, learning, thinking and understanding. Its that simple. You still got a long way to go, clearly.

Cowboy TTop - Well put, but lets be honest, Americans are homophobic, apparently, someone running, dribbling a ball is gay, as opposed to American Football, which has 300 lbs black men rubbing against each other, you're one step away from wrestling! It's a funny predicament, really. I find myself bored immensely by American football, and the lack of athleticism.

To each his own, though. American's are as homophobic and xenophobic as the Japanese, really.

Several other games don't even appear on that list, let alone at the top of it. Does it mean we don't like them enough? ofcourse not. Its a bloody sales chart. There are always games we like but we can't buy everything. Get real, people.

Destructiod is a site I visit on a daily basis. It keeps me in touch with what's happening in the gaming world and adds a good amount of humor and fun to it, making alot of the articles posted an enjoyable read. That is except for yours Jim Sterling. Nearly every article you post is either whining, complaining, a negative remark, or a post in hopes to get a bunch of blogging gamers riled up about something stupid. Your jokes aren't funny and, sorry to break the news to you, those little witty titles you come up with, aren't all that witty. So if you want to now go ahead and bash on soccer then go right ahead, but please consider a few things:

1. Can you even run one tenth of what a professional soccer player runs in a match?

2. Have you ever seen the gorgeous women that those "overpaid metrosexuals" get?

3. Have you ever been outside of America? Soccer is the most popular sport in the world.

4. If you ever do go outside of America please make sure to visit the English and remind them that they are "beer guzzling, skinheaded racists who follow the boring sport of football like it was some kind of religion." Those pub-goers forget from time to time and would love to be reminded again.

5. <img src="http://www.destructoid.com/elephant/images/authors/sterling-new2.gif">

I know your pompous attitude will find a little remark to post, but please try and think next time before posting an article showing how ignorant you are.

@SeventhSense: I generally like to read Sterling's blogs, but I have to admit, recently he has been going down the hate path. I'd post links and whatnot for the other readers, but its tedious (laymans terms: don't know how). I think he needs to get his KUF copy soon to relieve some of that grumpyness.

On another note, most sportsplayers tend to be overpaid. I definitely don't think that some of them deserve the exhorbitant amounts of money they receive, but then again, it really is better than the alternative. The alternative is, that the really really rich guy who happened to have a few hundred spare million that bought the team gets the hundreds of millions that they make a year in ticket sales, ads, merchandising, etc. Most (not all mind you) athletes tend to be from humble beginings, like a lot of the Brazilian players who lived in slums and such. Honestly, they help their communities with the money they make and frequently donate to charities. They've experienced the bottom rung, and they do their part to help others out of it. Some people get ahead in life on their brains, others on their looks; they have their athletic skills.

On the whole metrosexual thing; sadly a few players have given the sport that image, but quite honestly, I don't see whats wrong with it. Whats wrong with them dressing up whenever they're out and about. I'd rather they set that example than have children's role models walking around with barbed-wire tattoos on their faces and such.

Oh, I can NOT believe someone invoked the, "Wow, soccer is popular and therefore = everyone should like it!" Lots of people like Britney Spears and Big Brother and all other sorts of shite; doesn't mean everyone has to like it. And I'm sorry, but in my book, a sport over which people have been MURDERED because of a bad play or thrown game? Is shite.

Hey, I don't sing like Britney Spears, and I also look nothing like her. Know what? I still think she's shite. I forgot that I have to be able to do the exact thing I criticise in order to have the "right" to criticise it.

OH! And I've seen skanky people like Kid Rock and Larry Flynt get their hands on women that the public considers "attractive", so that means I ALSO have to like and/or admire them. Good to know.

Every single "reason" why Jim is just so wrong for hating football is a complete non-reason. Every single band, actor, director, or sports hero you don't like probably makes more money than you and gets far more attractive women. Does that make you respect them more? No? Then shut the fuck up.

If you can't be secure enough in your "love" (or obsession) for something that you can't handle it when someone expresses an opinion to the contrary, than you're a whiny crybaby and should go elsewhere. This is a site for opinions. Everyone has one. I'll bet the people most often agreed with here don't get NEARLY as much feedback as the people (read Jim) who are disagreed with. You're obviously so bothered by Sterling's dislike of soccer that you 1) have to write a whole essay on it and 2) can't even get it straight that he's not American.

If HALF of you obsessed fanboys (be it Sony, Microsoft, soccer, or David Hasselhoff) would speak about 90% less than you do, Dtoid would be a much lovelier place.
