The Engineers have long been talked about in the Halo novels. They're a class of super smart aliens that can fix anything they touch. For whatever reason, the Engineers were never in an actual Halo game, until now.

GameVideos has a new Halo 3: ODST video up showing the floating little aliens as they move around the battlefield. We don't see what the Engineers can actually do, but I suspect they are some sort of support class alien and will aid the other Covenant forces in some way.

You can check out the floating little creatures after the break as well as a quick look at the bonus round in Firefight mode. Halo fanboys, you happy that the Engineer is finally in a Halo game?

That's great news. It's always nice to see some of those things you imagine in the books to come to life on screen.

Yes, but can they erect a dispenser?

That bonus round video is hilarious. I love the announcer's near-sarcastic tone when he says "good luck."

It was hard to tell what the engineer was actually doing, though. It looked just like a floating target that posed no threat whatsoever...which I hope, isn't the case in the actual game.

I was really baffled from reading about the Engineers in the books, considering I had played all the Halo games but never seen them. This is yet another reason for me to get ODST.

It seems a bit strange. The Engineers are extremely fragile, and they have been known to be peaceful in comparison to the other members of the Covenant. I can't imagine they do much in battle, and I'd actually feel bad killing them, if that's the case.

That's kind of cool. I'm wondering if you could use them at some point since they really don't have any allegiance to either side in the books. They're basically single minded fixers of anything put in front of them.

They were in the Halo 1 files, and you could get to them through some glitching.

Having only read one of the books, I'd all but forgotten about these guys. It's cool that they're finally showing up for me to shoot at.

Wait, weren't engineers in Halo Wars? They were the floaty things that repaired/healed the Covenant units. On a side note, I'm really liking how accurate the suppressed SMG seems to be in relation to the normal one.

Glad to see the little buggers finally getting some action. A shame that they're getting shot at, though, since they seemed mostly harmless in the novels.

LIGHTER THAN SOME Noooooooo!
Anyways cant wait to see them up close. From the videos its seems that either you need to kill them because they repair covenant shields (maybe?) and/or they seem to serve as good explosives...

Very sweet, even though I couldn't really tell what the bugger was doing. Still, Firefight is looking great, can't wait to try it out.

Why is this news? they were already in Halo Wars. they have no real use in a FPS other than mindless cannon fodder IMO.
