ELSPA shoots down the '90 percent' R4 story photo

We all knew something was up with a recent quote by John Hillier, Manager of ELSPA's Intellectual Property Crime Unit. The Sunday Post, a Scottish newspaper, quoted Hillier saying "In America it's thought 90 percent of Nintendo users are playing pirated games because of R4s.” Now the ELSPA says that the Sunday Post article contains false quotes.

A spokesperson for ELSPA told GamesIndustry.biz that, "[John] didn't quote The Sunday Post on any figures whatsoever. ELSPA would certainly never presume to comment about America or anywhere else outside of the UK."

It seems that the Sunday Post article is a mishmash of a real conversation with Hillier, facts from a Singaporean article, and false quotes. Or that's that the ELSPA says.

"The quotes from The Sunday Post were ascribed to his name from another article which originates from a website in Singapore. This, it appears, is where The Sunday Post first found out about the supposed R4 situation and for some reason unknown to John have quoted him on what this article said."

The spokesperson also added that Nintendo views the reported facts in the article as false.

"As far as Nintendo are concerned, the facts are completely spurious."

I think that a comment by Destructoid reader DeusPayne sums things up well: "I HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt that even 90% of DS owners KNOW what an R4 is, let alone own one."

You guys are too smart for this crap, right?

that was already hard to believe when DS systems fly off the shelf along with games and as stated, half of the people buying DS Lites don't even know of R4. let along games even being possible to download on a DS cartridge.

90% of all statistics are made up, on the spot, by the person who cites them.

even if 90% of americans owned an r4 doesn't mean they know how to use them

almost all older people that see me playing mine ask me if i have the brain training games and kids just like any game

and when i tell them i'm not playing a game i'm reading a comic they say "you can do that? how?"

so i explain everything it can do and tell them how and they get really interested but mostly say "i'd never understand all that if i buy one can you just do it for me"

We all knew it was bull, and its good to see that when we are right and kick up a fuss, some of these muppets recheck themselves, for their credibilty is at stake.

I'm still gonna buy me an R4 though, as I really want to use Colors ap on my DS. Its amazing some of the artwork people have made via this little program (that's right, it lets you draw and upload your DS work online). Result.

funny you should mention it, there was some girl that i was sitting next to before a collage lecture who was using one, and then later a guy was talking about how his friend had one

got me thinking that i might be the only person getting games legitimately

I live in Brazil here the R4 attachment ratio closes to 100%, it is this or playing any of the bundled games because it is not officially out here and a new, imported game goes up to 140 bucks, closely half of the minimum wage.

It's probably PSP. I mean forty bucks for a game you can easily download onto a two (or even one) gig memory stick with easy enough programming that Michael J. Fox can wildly flail his arms and still manage to program it to play his favorite games he played while on the set of Teen Wolf back in the day, it's not hard. You'd have to be borderline stupid to pull off failing to program it. It's so easy to hack, the PSP is like a drunk girl at a party who always bends over to pick up her cigarettes and flashes her ass like she doesn't know it.

Alright the ds sucks! The psp is better! I know cause looking at the status of each let me ask all you little fuckers 3 questions. Does the ds play music, HELL NO, does it play movies, NO, does it go on internent as good, NO. The only reason people buy the ds is to have on screen on the top and one screen on the bottom to look at and get you all fucking confused. Who agrees with me?
Vanima's Avatar
Vanima at 02/02/2008 13:38
@crane0102

Probably not very many people. The PSP and the DS are completely different systems and there are lots of people that enjoy each of them in different ways. I'm sure there are probably a few people here that even own both. Just because you prefer one over the other doesn't mean you should run around and insult the people that prefer a system you don't. It's just not very nice at all.

crane0102: don't seem to have found anybody to agree with you yet, huh? That's probably because all the features you listed have nothing to do with playing games and you're on a gaming site.

A simple truth: the DS has about a thousand times more decent games than the PSP.

Another simple truth: if I wanted something that could "play music, play videos and surf the internet", I'd use my mobile phone - which I do, frequently!
