ELSPA boss to UK government: Give games more support photo

The current social and political climate around gaming is a strange one indeed. The industry has exploded in recent years to overtake the Hollywood, and the way things are going it won't be long before music gets left in the dust as well. However despite being the all conquerung behemoth that it is, gaming's treatment from outside the industry just hasn't caught up with its status yet, and nowhere is that more true than the UK.

Between bannings and lack of government support - which the British film industry does get - things are woefully out of date at the moment. There were reasons to be cheerful last month though, as the New Minister for Creative Industries pledged support, and it seems ELSPA director general Paul Jackson was listening. He responded today, stating that the UK industry needs government financial help in staying competitive in the global marketplace, but was somewhat doubtful of the chances of that help happening:

Our impression is that government understand that there is a serious problem here and we have been invited back to discuss the issue further.

However we are wary that historically government has never really given us the support we require when compared to other industries in our sector.

The reality is that the market is financially doped in other parts of the world, making it incredibly difficult for the industry in the UK to compete.

There are issues for our Government in talking to other governments about the predatory activities they seem to be carrying out.

I don't believe British industry needs special help. We're very innovative and competitive. We need the Government to protect us from uncompetitive activities, to ensure that we're not being attacked by unfair practices elsewhere.

This needs to happen, and it needs to happen soon.  Back in the '80s and '90s the British industry was thriving, but far too much of it has been swallowed up by overseas companies over recent years. A lot of that could have been avoided had the government offered the same financial incentives for working domestically that other countries do. The UK film industry is already a sorry mess compared to what it used to be. Let's not let that happen to gaming.

Totally agree, this needs to happen and needs to happen soon, theres some great development houses in this country, but nearly all of them are now owned by companies from other countries, lwaving only a handful of studio's that have the freedom to make truly British games (I'm looking at Free Radical's TimeSplitters series as an example of that)

David, Im not sure I agree with the assessment that the British Film industry needs help protecting itself against uncompetitive activities. The inovations that have been made recently in digital film production have opened the doors for amateur filmmakers everywhere and one doesn't need to have studio support to make a quality film that can be subitted to festivals to get exposure.

"The reality is that the market is financially doped in other parts of the world, making it incredibly difficult for the industry in the UK to compete."

While this may be true it doesn't mean that those other parts of the world are neccessarily making good films. I mean look at Pirates of the Carribbean 2/3 they cost a bazillion to make and frankly they are rather craptacular movies, whereas a movie like Napolean Dyamite, while some people don't like it, it turned out well for not having a whale of a budget.

PS:Here in Hollywood, most people don't agree that games have "overtaken us"....even if that might actually be true.

Wait you're talking about the GAMING industry needing to protect itself...
That might be the case actually...but I think in the future the gaming dev industry might be more open like the film biz is becoming. the 3d graphics software is constantly being improved and is more easily grasped now than ever. Get ready for the homebrew game developers to sweep the world!!

If Britain can produce a Mike Leigh for gaming, I'll be playing the shit out of it.

Pew alot of the current crop of hot titles come from Britain, Realtime Worlds are based here, so thats Crackdown, Rockstar North are in Scotland, so GTA, RARE, Free Radical, Lionhead, the houses formerly known as Psygnosis and Reflections which are now Sony studios, not to mention Codemasters. But most of those are owned by Japanese and American companies now.

Yeah and Mike Leigh is an indie director; or so I thought? It was more a response to bleep. The UK creates a lot of good games, a lot better ones than Holland at least. We have to make do with Overlord and Killzone..

In my opinion, the EU should start funding the games industry for the whole of Europe. There is enough talent here, but also a lot of smaller studios that are easy to buy for the large corporations. If they could combine UK structure, French animation and German/Czech engines for instance, that would be awesome. Maybe some Ukraine open-ended gameplay too, although that might add 10 years to the development cycle.
