Elevator Action returns to arcades ... as a light gun game! photo

I don’t really know how to describe a “joy explosion,” but I just had one upon hearing the news that Square Enix (who purchased Taito) is reinventing classic retro game Elevator Action. And, boy, when I say “reinventing” I really mean “reinventing.” Elevator Action: Death Parade (best title ever!) will be a light gun arcade game that -- get ready for this -- features actual metal elevator doors that cover the huge video screen. The large red button next to the guns will allow players to open and close the giant doors whenever they are ready to face the on-screen shooting action.

God, this sounds so awesome.

Sadly, the gorgeous cabinet won’t be released until next year ... and only in Japanese arcades. Here’s hoping, though: maybe Square Enix will surprise us all and release this fantastic gem here.

What do you think? Are you drooling all over your computer like I am? What other retro franchises would you love to see get the light gun arcade treatment? And are you kind of grossed out by the term “joy explosion?”

YES WE CAN

I love Elevator Action...both in real life and the video game ;-)

And no, I'm not surprised by the use of "joy explosion" in your article, Chad.

Sadly, I have only heard of this game never played it but the idea of having elevator doors covering the screens for cover sounds awesome!

I can't say I've played the original, but any game that breaks the fourth wall by making an element from the real world a part of the display is probably gonna be good in my book :)

Its all about the peripherals. And I agree with Wexx; that 4th wall was built to be broken :)

I believe the word you're looking for is "JOYGASM!" See: Riddler, Batman Forever.

Okay, it wasn't. Weird.

Anyway, ever see that one episode of House where House operated on that one girl in the elevator and it turns out there was a poisonous tick on her vag? That was great.

I tried to transpose my comments from my blog about this game but they apparently aren't showing here. Basically, I want to know how fast those doors close or open. And how is the player supposed to see the HUD when the doors are closed?

I thought I was the only one who suddenly thinks dirty thoughts whenever I hear the words "Elevator" and "Action" spoken in consecutive order.
