  • Re: IGN readers HATE Modern Warfare 2

    I'm going to argue this in two parts: First, I will explain why console gamer complaints against pc gamers regarding this issue are irrational. They are merely instances of schadenfreude. Second, I will argue that this schadenfreude is misplaced.

    Argument 1:
    1. The move from dedicated servers to matchmaking is not a response to piracy. There are other ways to prevent piracy, which are JUST as effective. Any attempt to take into cd-keys into consideration, for example, would have a comparable effect in 90% of piracy cases. Some other form of network authenticity check, such as a Steamworks check, would work as well. Some will argue that, although this stops piracy on the main multiplayer networks, it does NOT stop piracy in general. I reply that, yes, this is true. However, this is also true of the measure they have taken. If you think this will stop all piracy (or even all multiplayer piracy!) than you know little about the history of software and multimedia piracy. Others will argue that, at the least, multiplayer piracy would be more difficult in the current situation. This is probably true AT THE MARGINS, but it would have no or essentially no effect on sales. Those who wish to play multiplayer would find a nearly non-existent community on pirated networks, and this system would lack some of the profile capabilities of the official system. Essentially, if you want to play multiplayer with a game that has a cd-key check, you have to buy the game.

    2. Implementation of dedicated servers would not be a difficult or costly decision. Given that PC games have had these options for over a decade, and given that nearly every other prior release by IW has had these options, the costs of implementation would not be considerable. Especially when you consider the budget for this game (astronomical), and the likely sales figures (again, astronomical), this argument falls flat on its face.

    3. The implementation of dedicated servers on the PC has NO direct effect on console gamers. Plenty of games are released with different network capabilities across consoles and across consoles as a whole vis-a-vis the PC. You stand nothing to gain by having these features removed.

    4. The lack of these features involves several SIGNIFICANT reductions in terms of gaming capabilities. i. There will be a significant hit in terms of performance. This is the largest problem. ii. There will be no or virtually no mod support. This is, in my opinion, probably the most likely cause of the removal of dedicated servers. IW wants to sell more DLC, and it can't do that when gamers give it away for free. iii. There will be no choice regarding where you play, what rules you play by, etc. This is the smallest problem, but it still can be significant.

    Since the problems created are REAL and SIGNIFICANT and since neither console gamers nor IW gain anything significant (excepting DLC sales) from the removal of dedicated servers, the arguments of console gamers represent schadenfreude.

    Argument 2:
    The lack of these features represent indirect, but, nonetheless, REAL and SIGNIFICANT problem for console gamers. Essentially, rather than console gamers gaining the standard features of PC gaming, we are walking backwards. I just saw a news post YESTERDAY complaining about the lack of modding capabilities on the 360 on some notable cross PC/360 releases. Yet here we are, talking about the exact same thing, only the console gamers considerate RIDICULOUS that anyone would even complain. This is part of the same problem! If modding is removed from PC games, do you really expect to get access to it on the 360? Modding has been a stand-by in hardcore gaming for over a decade, and its loss will represent a significant problem in the years to come. Ditto regarding the impact of dedicated servers on speed/performance!

    Essentially, advances in networked gaming raise all boats. Why are we attacking this (relatively dated!) advance? Why don't we care that we're all being shipped a product that could, with little difficulty and cost, achieve so much more? When modding is dead and we're all up to our eyeballs in DLC, I hope you remember all the laughter you got out of these "crazy PC gamers." ... view replies

    @DtoidBadMrK

    I understand this argument, but are you really prepared to follow through with the argument's implications? It might be funny to smack down the PC a little bit as a console gamer, but I find it fascinating that the very people who would make this argument vis-a-vis the PC would bitch and moan until the end of time about the Wii and its impact on gaming. If its all about the masses, then we're on a slippery slope to games being the same kind of quality as movies (yuck).

    Luckily, there will always be incentives for independently minded developers to target these communities. Where MW2 fails, others will pick up the pieces. ... view replies

  • Re: IGN readers HATE Modern Warfare 2

    Let me preface my comment with a few notes: First, I am both a PC and a console gamer. I come from more of a console gaming background, but I've gotten somewhat into PC gaming over the past decade (largely because of Strategy games). Second, these people are morons.

    Now that that is over with, I still need to ask.. why all the hatred against PC gamers? Let's ignore the morons at IGN. There are morons on all sides of this debate, and I don't necessarily think console gamers would stack well in a moron competition. Why don't you think this is an issue? Why is anyone who brings up this point marginalized and criticized?

    From a PC gamer perspective, vis-a-vis competitors and predecessors: Modern Warfare 2 is 10 dollars more than any other product; it has a shorter than usual single player campaign (because people "don't care" about SP); it has a stripped down multiplayer mode in terms of capabilities; and it will have a laggier multiplayer component.

    Console gamer response (including Jim Sterling, who often fans these flames): SHUT UP AND EAT YOUR MW2 LIKE A GOOD PC GAMER ALSO YOU STEAL EVERYTHING AND YOU DONT DESERVE ANYTHING!

    Why is the PC gamer view seen as so ridiculous, immature, warped, etc. to a console gamer? Why are the responses so vitriolic?

    Like I said, I'm both a PC gamer and a console gamer. FPS's aren't even one of my main interests. I genuinely don't understand why the PC gamer view is being ignored entirely....

    Next time I hear a complaint about how X game on the 360 can't use mods or how Y game doesn't come to PS3, I'll just respond, "YOU ARE A CONSOLE GAMER GET USED TO IT AND EAT THE GARBAGE THAT IS GIVEN TO YOU!" ... view replies

  • Re: Randy Pitchford talks Valve, Steam, and exploitation

    @Ariolander

    I don't think that eBay represents a proper comparison point. The nature of auctioning is a lot different than digital video game distribution. The former deals with finite (physical) sales (for the most part), while the latter deals with something that, essentially, can be sold in a number of different ways without creating significant difficulties. For example, if I want to sell a physical game, I NEED to use the service that would provide me with the most potential customers. I only have one thing to sell. I can't put it on multiple sites simultaneously. If I have a digital product, however, there is nothing to stop me from listing it everywhere. On the consumer end, this means that I don't just want to check eBay for a certain kind of item. I'm free to check out alternatives because there ARE realistic alternatives. This creates a further incentive for producers to exploit alternative digital distribution resources, which creates further incentives for customers to seek them out, etc. etc.

    This is a huge distinction, which really impacts any potential monopoly. I'd also argue that the alternatives are not as niche as you imply. DirectDrive, for example, has a pretty solid selection, and they tend to have a lot of sweet sales. I tend to think the process I laid out above has led to the growth of DD. It started as a small competitor, but why wouldn't everyone want their games listed on it? There are really no reasons to utilize all available channels.

    This all ignores the fact that non-digital distribution is still available, that other device-specific digital distribution networks are available (Xbox Live!, PSN, WiiWare, iTunes, etc.), and that we are still in the early days of all of this. Valve is nowhere near the hegemonic force that Pitchford seems to be arguing. ... view replies

  • Re: Randy Pitchford talks Valve, Steam, and exploitation

    I think moral ambiguity is just one important facet. You also need, as Trebz just said, attachment to characters or whatever else would be affected by your moral choices. Without attachment, moral choices end up looking a lot like talent tree decisions or something comparably utilitarian.

    I also think there needs to be a broad moral context that forces players to really think about there decisions beyond attachment and localized gain. Finally, I think there needs to be some impact of moral choices on future moral choices and the character itself. Right now, it impacts powers, looks, maybe some other stuff, but it's mostly shallow. I have more to say, but I'll save it for now. ... view replies

    @Anthony

    I understand what you mean to some extent, but I still think this is more a difference of taste. I enjoy exploring and getting new powers. You enjoy getting stars. To me, getting new powers is far more exciting, but, if you prefer a form of linear "point-getting" then that's cool too.

    However, the idea that you just explore the same dungeon over and over.. well.. that's not really true. Like I said, in the Castlevania games I've played of this subgenre, you can teleport pretty easily, and each area of the dungeon is different.. different enemies, background music, style, bosses, items, etc. It's not often where you spend more than a minute going through old areas, and that's usually only if you want to be a completionist.

    As for your MP example, I've never played the Metroid Prime games. In fact, I've never played any Metroid game more than briefly, so I can't really speak to that experience. That doesn't happen in the Castlevania Metroid-style games though. ... view replies

    "In what way do those other genres rely on backtracking to the degree that Metroidvanias do? I mean, I understand you have to go back into the same worlds in Super Mario 64 over and over, but you're constantly doing completely different things, and getting tangible rewards in the form of stars, so that it doesn't have the same feel as a Metroidvania (where you're NOT getting that sense of tangible reward, because every new place you unlock will only lead to more places that need to be unlocked)."

    Umm, really? Did you just say this? What exactly are stars in Mario 64? Anyone remember? OH YEAH! They unlock new areas. In Castlevania/Metroid at least the "stars" that "open up new areas" also usually do cool combat stuff. Mario 64 is actually worse in this respect.

    "Certain RPGs or action games (like MGS) may occasionally ask you to go back to the same areas, but you're not asked to literally memorize where every impassable doorway is, and often backtrack the length of an entire map (or in the Metroid planet anecdote, several maps) to get where you need to go."

    I've never memorized the entirety of any of these games. Despite your criticism of the minimap.. it's pretty easy to use. Either you've explored an area to its walls or you haven't. Either there's a door you haven't gone through or there isn't. It's not rocket science.

    Also, you're really ignoring a lot with the whole "go back across entire maps" complaint. Granted, I haven't played the Metroid games that much, but the Castlevania (Metroid-style) games all have warp points and lots of other stuff to make travel pretty quick and painless. I don't see how this is much different than using an airship to get from city to city or something.... ... view replies

I don't think you've thought this through, really. I think you're trying to assign rational reasons for irrational tastes.

    Keep in mind that, when I call your taste irrational, it's because it's a taste. My tastes are irrational too. I don't give a crap about Halo or Grand Theft Auto. It's just not my taste. "Sony charges you for putting money in your PSN wallet." - Yeah, but Nintendo makes you buy WiiPoints in 10 dollar bundles, which is kind of ridiculous IMO. Understood though. All consoles have hidden costs, haha. ... view replies

  • Re: Moar Rumor: SFIV could still be coming to the Wii

    "True, but I'm not a fan of buying an extra $20 controller in addition to a $60 controller just to play all your games. Also, for SF4, I'd prefer the 360 controller, and just use the analog. We'll see about the online play if it ever does see the light of day. My guess is we'll still see friend codes. High Voltage tried like hell to not use them, but ended up "adhering to Nintendo's standards". "

    Every console has hidden costs. Well, maybe not the PS3, but it's upfront costs are pretty damn high.... XboxLive, for example. ... view replies

  • Re: New Zelda in 2011? Wii MotionPlus required?

    This is exactly the kind of game that COULD pull of decent motion controls (with the MotionPlus involved...) Nonetheless, there is bound to be lots of anger. Also, I'm not saying this will be successful. There is a lot they'd have to get right for this to work properly....

    Overall, I'd give this a 1:2 shot of being successful. If successful, I give this a 1:5 shot of getting Dtoiders to actually admit it works.... ... view replies

    "Oh wait, the awful Gamecube fighting game controls (I played SNK 2 on the GCN at a friend's house, just laughed at it, and drove back home to bring my PS2), and friend codes.

    Yea, don't port it."

    First off, ever hear of a classic controller? Still not perfect, but I'd prefer it over 360 controls. Second, I remember hearing TvC could have online w/out friends codes. Mayhaps the same with SFIV...

    Still, I'd rather buy it for PC. ... view replies

    -Real- Mega Man. Zero. Protoman/Blues. All of these would be great.

    Dante would be cool. Strider would be cool. I'd rather have real Mega Man, Zero, and Protoman/Blues though. ... view replies

  • Re: How did our E3 09 real life psychic predictions turn out?

    The only reason people aren't happy with Nintendo at E3 is because they think its cool to hate on the Wii and stuff. Last year, Nintendo TOTALLY dropped the ball. This year, I think they did a great job. I'm more excited for what's happening with the Wii than the PS3 by a fair margin. ... view replies

    "I quasi enjoy the Ninja Gaidens on the NES, but really, it just makes me want to go play Mega Man, or Batman NES, which I would contend are harder."

    As someone who has beaten all the Mega Man games (and most of the X series) and all the classic Ninja Gaiden games, I think you're crazy. NG1 is definitely harder than any of the Mega Man games. NG2 is easy, true, but NG1 is definitely harder. NG3 is also hard.. but for all the wrong reasons. ... view replies
