Tha Meat: 60GB PS3? Mine started doing that, took it apart 5 times trying to replace the thermal paste and make it quieter. Which I've managed to do but only to a degree, it's still too loud but tolerable at this point. Seems like more paste than less is the answer. Maybe the fan is going as well, but short of taking one out of a still quiet-running 60GB I'm not sure there's any way to test that.

Looks like it'll be time to downgrade to a Slim pretty soon. I'll miss the PS2 compatibility, but it's not like I've used it in 8 months or so.

Jim: Can we get some journalism here, if not from the sited article then from you? If 32% of those who have had 360s die have had 2 die and 19% have had 3 (or more?) die then the total failure rate is MUCH higher than 60%. Why is it that reporting on this topic is ALWAYS incorrect? Considering how much smaller the market is for PC games of this sort when compared to consoles and how much more extensive the testing is given the huge array of hardware configurations you really should be happy that you're getting anything at all. If it were my company I'd probably avoid the problem entirely because the profit opportunities are low and even when you get a moderate hit on your hands all of the "fans" are whining douchelords.

You might gain a bit of sympathy if you guys weren't such douchenozzles all the time about how "superior" your precious PC gaming is, when clearly it's not. Maybe you should just give it up like the rest of the world, games are more fun on the couch anyway.

wanderingpixel: False! Metal Gear Solid is STILL a fantastic game. Played it just last year in the run up to MGS4 and it's still one of the great games of all time, just not top 5 material like MGS3.

Final Fantasy 7 however was always over-rated to a large extent. It was a reasonably solid RPG with a graphical style that was all over the place, serious balance issues, and possibly the worst translation I've ever seen that hasn't become an hilarious Internet meme at some point. I actually find that I like it a lot more now than I did in 1997 since the fanboy nonsense surrounding it has calmed down a bit over the last few years.

I have to seriously disagree with Jim on GoldenEye. I played that shit less than 6 months ago and it's still great fun, though it could be nostalgia or maybe just the fact that I wrecked everyone's face at it. I'm not sure if most of you guys weren't around when the Playstation was released, but Tomb Raider is actually the most deserving of being on such a list after SM64. It might not be that great a game, but it definitely changed the gaming landscape in a very substantial way.

Not that it matters, any top 5 list of most revolutionary games (even of all time) that leaves GTA3 off is nothing but a joke. Not just for the way it revolutionized open world exploration games but for the way it pushed the boundaries of what is widely acceptable as far as content.

I've yet to see anything from Microsoft demonstrating how actual games that are fun, or even playable, are going to be possible with Natal. Waving your hands around to controls games isn't fun. mOnion: Not sure why everyone keeps saying Bioshock is in any way a role-playing game. I've played a bit of it (though clearly not enough to see what the fuss is about because I wasn't impressed) and as far as I can tell it's just a shooter with an upgrade system. There's a name for that sort of game, it's "shooter" or when in the first person perspective "first-person shooter" (FPS).

Fallout 3 (probably my favorite game of 2008) is fantastic, but it's not much of a shooter and for the most part can't actually be played as one until pretty late in the game when you're barely taking damage from anything. Even then it's still not a great shooter, but you can at least run around and shoot stuff without resorting to VATS at all.

I haven't played Mass Effect, but by all accounts it's not much of a shooter either despite having a lot of shooting in it.

From the little bit I got to play of Borderlands at PAX it's definitely a hell of a shooter and very much a role-playing game in the same way that Die-ablo is a role-playing game. How much you want to consider that an RPG is up to you, but I don't see any reason not to count it.

World of Goo was easily worth the $15 on Wiiware, though it's infuriating that they use a copy-protected save file so you can't back it up. I can't decide if dropping a penny to get a version for my computers would make me a dick, but since I'm already kind of a dick (see below) I'm not sure I should feel bad if it does.

Onlineatron: How exactly would you "pay" nothing for something? You can get something for nothing but you can't pay nothing. Wouldn't really be payment, now would it? If you're just concerned about exchanging cash for goods maybe you could email them and work out some sort of barter agreement.

GohanGVO: I get it. You're a joker, you make jokes! Do you not realize that anyone who can run a Steam copy can run a pirated copy on their computer? Or that Wiiware piracy is relatively easy and fairly widespread? Are you really so stupid that you think those sales are "unaffected by the potential of piracy" (whatever the fuck that means) or are you just that ignorant? It shocks the mind! You could say that with this sale effectively making the game free (you're too poor to be reading this if you think a penny is anything but effectively free) means that piracy of the game is unaffected by sales, but that isn't the point you were making because you were making jokes instead of sense.

You also got your math (or reading [or both]) wrong. The article you quoted (IN THE SECTION YOU POSTED!!!) clearly states, "15% of PC sales from Steam" (emphasis added). That means 3.75% of total sales (the number being discussed) if you assume the upper end of 25% of total sales occurring on PC. • Re: Get ready to kill things: Borderlands goes gold

How did anyone from Destructoid get review code for a game as metal as Borderlands before Brad Nicholson's pecs? That doesn't make any sense.

Anyway, in for two. Three if it turns out my PC can run it. ... view replies

  • Re: Bayonetta demo: Xbox 360 vs. PS3

Strange that the colors are more faded on PS3. That's usually the one area that PS3 performs better even when developers don't have the skills or resources to keep the framerate and/or resolution competitive.

Hopefully this sort of lazy outsourced porting will be surprising sometime before the next generation rolls around, it's pathetic. ... view replies

  • Re: Epic Mickey is definitely a Wii exclusive

Sony really needs to finalize the name on their thriimote, because Sexaxis is starting to stick because it's such an obvious name for a PS3 dildo. ... view replies

  • Re: TGS 09: Hands on with Tales of Graces

Do people actually like these games? The original on SFC was pretty cool because it was one of (if not the first) RPG with real-time battles and it had that sweet digitized song at the beginning, but the novelty wore off a decade ago and now they're just boring, tired, and pretty damn terrible. Just give us Tales of Forks already, because this series is well past done. ... view replies

  • Re: October saw PSN's biggest week ever

So what week had the most revenue for PlayStation Network? The world isn't worth saving if it was the week Final Fantasy VII got put up.

The Silent Protagonist: Word on the street is that the songs on the Rockband Unplugged UMD are probably licensed only for UMD distribution and that's why they only have that starter edition thing with 5 songs available for download. I wish all of these music games would go with a free or cheap edition with a handful of songs and then just sell the rest as add-ons. It'd cut out the ability to buy a disc used or on clearance and get a bunch of content cheap, but digital distribution is going to kill that avenue sooner or later anyway so they might as well just get it over with.

Jim Sterling: Have you ever considered that perhaps it's not so much pro-Sony as anti-flamebaiting bullshit that brings the crowds? That or fighting is just more fun than getting along, which is definitely true in any situation where you're not getting your ass physically beat. ... view replies

I certainly hope it's fake. Otherwise it's not hard to see how they went out of business with a 360 game that looks that terrible. ... view replies

  • Re: SCEA: Don't blame us for PSP Minis pricing

I still wouldn't buy this PSP minis shit, but there's not reason to be so stupid, Jim. Tetris with a dpad and buttons is easily worth 10, 20, or maybe even 30 times what it is on a platform as rubbish for gaming as iPhone. Even if it it's a crappy version of Tetris with a dpad and buttons it's better than ANY version that is touch screen only (or even worse, tilt).

xenon: No different over here, but probably worse. Expensive contract with AT&T, expensive phone, terrible interface, uncomfortable to hold, ugly. The only good thing about an iPhone is that it's heavy so when you drop it in the ocean it won't be coming back. ... view replies

  • Re: Randy Pitchford talks Valve, Steam, and exploitation

I'm curious how much of a cut Valve is taking and what exactly they're offering in exchange for that cut. Regardless of that every write up of this interview has taken a disturbingly negative, sensationalist spin to what Randy Pitchford is saying. Reading the whole interview I'm not sure how any reasonable person could have more than minor disagreements with him.

Of course I could be biased because Randy Pitchford is one of the industry figures I respect the most and Gabe Newell is a big fat idiot. ... view replies
