"This is a man's world," James Brown once argued. "But it wouldn't be nothing without a woman on this Earth." Of course, he then proceeded to beat such women to within an inch of their lives, but the old abusive bastard had a point. Women are important, and while this male-dominated games industry overlooks them, the female of the species has its crucial place in the world of interactive entertainment. Of course, as with most things that we have discussed in this series, any woman who wants to be in a videogame has to obey Ten Golden Rules in order to become a success. Ten concessions must be made if any videogame character hopes to be up there with the great female leaders of our medium. If you too wish for the fame, fortune, and ultimately respect that comes with being a female in a videogame, then you'll want to read and take note of the Ten Golden Rules of videogame women.

Portable gaming has come a long way since the days of the old LCD toys that took those little gold batteries that you never see anymore. As technology evolves, handheld games have become sophisticated enough to rival even console games, and have arguably become just as important, if not more so. I myself am rarely ever without a handheld console. My job often requires traveling up and down the country, so being able to play a game on the move is something very important to me. As such, when I see a new handheld on the market, I want it to be good. These things keep me sane on the buses, the trains and the planes that would otherwise drive me to drink. That's a big responsibility, and if you're going to hold my attention, you need to be good. This means only one thing. Yes, it's time for another Ten Golden Rules, the most important commandments that a purveyor of portable pleasure should take to heart if the gamer on the go is to be satisfied. Read on then, for the Ten Golden Rules of successful handheld consoles.

If you're reading this, then chances are good that you're what we might call a "hardcore" gamer. You love games. You love buying games. You want to have more games. However, unless you are Roman Polanski, it's highly likely that you don't have the kind of ready cash to consistently splash on such decadent items. Why should a lack of funds, however, act as a barrier to your enjoyment of things? Why suffer the pain of unfulfilled desire when you can just take what you want? That's right, I'm talking about piracy. It's okay, we're all friends here, nobody's going to judge you. Take my hand, I've got a revelation for you. Piracy is a magical process whereby you receive goods without paying money for them. It's a bit like stealing, except it's not because everybody knows that you can't steal the Internet, and that's all you're doing really. You're just taking bits of Internet for yourself, which you already pay for anyway. Sounds great, right? That's because it is. So, now that you've definitely decided to be a videogame pirate, you're going to need to know how to do it right. You're going to need some Golden Rules. Ten of them, in fact. Even lawlessness has its laws, so come with me as we learn the Ten Golden Rules of videogame piracy.

Back in the good old days, games developers were bespectacled, hairy monstrosities that kept themselves safely locked away in perpetually dark bedrooms, their only relationship in life being a loyal devotion to endless streams of code for the latest Commodore 64 hits. While Jeff Minter does his best to keep those days alive, it cannot be denied that the birth of the Internet gave rise to a new breed of game developer: One with a captive audience, an opportunity to say whatever he or she felt like, and the 24 hour online access that made them feel as famous as The Brad Pitts. Yes, the era of the games industry celebrity had begun, and since the creators of Triple A titles now know what human contact is like, they have taken to the heady world of public relations like ducks to water -- with a grace, charisma and dignity that only they can exude. How did some of the most famous games industry celebrities get where they are today? They simply followed the Ten Golden Rules, of course! Yes, the Ten Golden Rules return to Destructoid with a brand new list of commandments for any budding game designers who want to be Internet Famous. Come with me as we learn the Ten Golden Rules of games industry celebrities!

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is looming on the horizon, and in case you couldn't tell, Destructoid is celebrating its arrival with a range of MGS-flavored features. Metal Gear Solid easily stands as one of my favorite game franchises of all time. From stealth mechanics that actually work to epic boss fights and some of the best storytelling in videogames, MGS is able to hold its own against anybody who claims that videogames can't be art. Like all things however, Metal Gear Solid adheres to its own set of Golden Rules, like everything else we have talked about in this article series. If Guns of the Patriots is to be a true MGS, then it too shall have to obey these commandements without fail. Yes, for the first time in print, we invite you deep into the twisted brain of Hideo Kojima as we unveil the Ten Golden Rules of Metal Gear Solid.

We have had many useful commandments for loyal readers over the course of our Ten Golden Rules series. From learning how to be an online gamer and fanboy, to crafting a successful JRPG or Survival Horror, there have been failsafe doctrines of conduct for gamer and game designer alike. This week, though, we're catering to the "other" side of the fence, as it were. No, that wasn't a tasteless gay euphemism; I am of course talking about those would deem themselves our mortal enemies -- the anti-games lobby. Be they concerned and clueless parents who want to save the chilluns or outraged hardline Christian campaigners Hell-bent on the collapse of the evil games industry, those who are part of the league against gaming have to adhere to a set of rules like everyone else -- in fact, these guys crave laws and regulations more than anybody. How fitting, then, that they too have their Ten Golden Rules. Whether you're an anti-gamer scouring the blogs for evidence of yet more interactive torture porn, or a hardcore gamer who's getting bored of all that pretend violence and is considering a move into joining the Parents Television Council, these are the rules for you. Learn them, love them, oppress the world with them.

Ah, fanboys. What industry can truly call itself an industry without them? Those who prove themselves obsessively loyal to any product or corporation can be found among many communities, and nowhere do they flourish more freely than within gamer culture. Although it may sound ridiculous to normal people, swearing undying allegiance to a heartless box of electrical components is a perfectly rational act in the mind of the fanboy, even though if he defended something like a particular brand of cheese with such rabid determination, he'd be rightly locked up in a mental hospital. Thanks to the Internet, where any anonymous coward can say what he likes, fanboyism runs rampant, and shows no signs of slowing down. That said, the term fanboy is thrown around all too casually, and is now on par with the word emo when it comes to having lost all meaning through erroneous overuse. If you want to be a true fanboy -- and I know all of you do -- then you must, of course, follow ten golden rules. The ten elegant laws that will see you rise above the pretenders and take your place in fanboy Valhalla. Welcome to the latest in our ten golden rules series, the ten golden rules of videogame fanboyism.

By our very nature, we as people are drawn to the dark. We may not like to admit it, but our macabre instincts thirst for blood, as we find ourselves morbidly drawn to brutality and violence. It is no surprise that horror is such a popular genre, where we can explore our grim compulsion to view carnage and experience fear in the comfort of our own homes. Fear is a powerful motivator, and an instinct that we like to keep well sharpened. Horror taps into a need to be scared, a need to keep one's "fight or flight" programming well-honed and finely tuned. Horror games are no different. Unlike movies, a survival horror places the player directly in the thick of the terror, directly in the eye of the storm, where fight our natural instincts are not only brought out, but actively required. Be it Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark or Clock Tower, there are many frightening examples of interactive horror to choose from, where the primary goal is simply to get out of there alive. In general, they follow a set of distinct rules. While not 100% true in all cases, there are ten important golden rules that a survival horror ought to acknowledge if it wants to be truly terrifying. From they who brought you the ten golden rules of online gaming, and the ten golden rules of Japanese RPGs, we now present to you the gory, the grim and the grotesque, with ten golden rules of survival horror.
